Fancy Nancy: Bonjour, Butterfly (Fancy Nancy)37 reviews
Jane O'connor

HarperCollins, 2008

Fantastic Book for Girls
I had never heard of the Fancy Nancy series until my daughter was given this as a gift. I love it, and both my daughters love it (ages 5 and 2). There are only a few sentences on each page but they are filled with [...] words, like "exquisite," "thrilled," "scowl," "ecstatic" and many others. Plus it gives a little French lesson ("Oui" and "Bonjour"). I highly recommend this book!

Fancy Nancy at the Museum (I Can Read Book 1)14 reviews
Jane O'connor

HarperTrophy, 2008

Oh la la! We're going to a museum to see masterpieces!
What is there not to like about Fancy Nancy! Since this series began, young readers (and their parents) have held in their hands someone precious and pretty and sweet and fancy. The artwork is simply adorable and utterly feminine in depicting the precious and precocious Nancy. With this reader, Fancy Nancy joins the I Can Read! group of books. At Level 1 (which this book is) the reader is ...

Magic Tree House Boxed Set, Books 1-4: Dinosaurs Before Dark, The Knight at Dawn, Mummies in the Morning, and ...99 reviews
Mary Pope Osborne

Random House Books for Young Readers, 2001

Great series for beginning readers
First off, ignore the people giving one or two stars or criticizing the grammar. They are full of it. Only the types of English teachers that made you spend hours diagramming sentences in high school would have an issue, and they would probably give "Huckleberry Finn" one star for the atrocious grammar too, if they dared. Far from an illiterate mess, the stories are well put together and ...

Fancy Nancy Sees Stars (I Can Read Book 1)5 reviews
Jane O'connor

HarperTrophy, 2008

A little more advanced - in a good way
My daughter was born in March, 2002. She's now 6 and a half. We didn't discover Fancy Nancy until Feb 2007, so she was about 5. It's been a little disappointing for this series to come out as she is outgrowing it. The stories are cute but a little simple for a first grader. Although "The Boy from Paris" and "...at the Museum" were good, this book just seems more advanced. I am hoping ...

Where the Wild Things Are366 reviews
Maurice Sendak

Harper Collins, 1988

Imaginative and Amazing Illustrations
The illustrations in this book really caught my eye. My favorite one was when all the wild things were howling at the moon. I enjoyed how the text stretches over a few pages and keeps the reader interested.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas!93 reviews
Dr. Seuss

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1957

A Holiday Classic
The holiday season would be incomplete without the annual reading of this delightful tale that introduces the little ones and many of the big ones too, to the residents of Whoville. A timeless tale where one will meet Little Cindy Lou Who, Max the Dog, and the Grinch, whose heart is two sizes too small. In the end, the Grinch is not the only one that discovers the true meaning of the holiday. ...

Horton Hears A Who!64 reviews
Dr. Seuss

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1954

A timeless masterpiece for children of all ages
Horton Hears a Who is a masterpiece. Often heralded as a book on friendship, it is much more than that. Theodor Seuss Geisel was an outspoken critic of Hitler and Mussolini, and Horton Hears a Who has been said to have been Geisel's call to support the fledgling democracy in Japan after World War II. But Horton is much more than that. Horton Hears a Who is a reminder of the importance of ...

Jane O'connor

HarperTrophy, 2008

Another Fabulous "Fancy Nancy" book
This book is darling and fun to read with a kindergartener/first grader. If you like the other "Fancy Nancy" books, then you'll be pleased with this one. You can't beat the price.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day182 reviews
Judith Viorst

Aladdin, 1987

It's a horrible day, but it's a great book!
This was a great book! It made us laugh. We liked the part when Alexander fell in the mud, and when his foot got stuck in the elevator. You should read this book because it is a funny book. If you read it, we think you will like it. We would recommend it to both adults and kids, especially for people who are not having a good day. It will make them feel better. Happy reading!

The Cat in the Hat177 reviews
Dr. Seuss

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1957

Two boys' review: Simply, a classic
This silly story centers around self-responsibility. The children panic because they know their mother won't be happy if she comes home and find the house a mess. The fish fluctuates between being an annoyance and a voice of reason. The story stars a well-meaning cat who tries to release the children from an afternoon of boredom. He brings excitement, which quickly devolves into chaos...or so ...

The Giving Tree611 reviews

HarperCollins, 1992

A little story with a big heart...
It's amazing how a book, barely a hundred in pages, could quickly and intensely impart so much sadness and despair, and with something so simple and as complicated as unconditional love. Sure, a number of readers have probably thought that the tree was nothing but a big sop, a martyr blind to the selfishness and capricious whims of a child, but shouldn't the object of our unceasing wonder be ...

Today I Feel Silly: And Other Moods That Make My Day82 reviews
Jamie Lee Curtis

Joanna Cotler, 1998

Feelings are oh-so important
Recognizing our feelings and being able to name and claim them is so important to our emotional health. A meaningful book that travels through the variety of feelings a child may encounter in any day - from angry to joyful to confused to lonely to.... A wide range of feelings are included in this charming rhyme. This is a fun book which can start discussions about how we are feeling while ...

Green Eggs and Ham (I Can Read It All by Myself Beginner Books)222 reviews
Dr. Seuss

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1960

The Greatest American Philosopher
As a mom of a 24 and an 8 year old (I know . . . big surprise) I am firmly of the opinion that Dr. Seuss is the greatest American philosopher! In this book he urges us to try things that we may be afraid of or even repelled by. Many folks think this book applies only to food but I think he is urging us to be more brave in all avenues of life. We need to listen to those around us urging us ...

The Lorax (Classic Seuss)130 reviews
Dr. Seuss, Theodor Seuss Geisel

Random House Books for Young Readers, 1971

I guess I'm a tree-hugger
Okay, so this is probably as preachy as Dr. Suess gets, and it just might get on the nerves of some people, but the tree hugger in me salutes him for it, even as he paints a grimmer picture of environmental destruction than Al Gore ever thought of. Even so, it's clearly Suess with his imaginative worlds and funny characters. It's a solemn book of warning that it pretty darn good into ...

Junie B. Jones's First Boxed Set Ever! (Books 1-4)164 reviews
Barbara Park

Random House Books for Young Readers, 2001

Very Cute!
My six year old daughter totally gets these books. Yes, we have talked about what Junie B. is doing wrong, and how we should behave in "real" life. Definitely an opportunity to explain right from wrong. I'll use age-appropriate opportunities, real or fiction, to teach life skills. So far, it seems to be working. Enjoy!

Have You Filled a Bucket Today: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids33 reviews

Cutest book ever!
I was first introduced to this book while in Nursing School. I was asked to read to a group of elementary students, and they loved the book! I was recently invited to read to a group of elementary students and they loved the story and the colorful pictures. As an adult, this is becoming one of my favorite books too!

Cars and Trucks and Things That Go (Giant Little Golden Book)141 reviews
Richard Scarry

Golden Books, 1975

Beloved Book
My 17 month old daughter received "The Best Word Book Ever" as a gift and immediately loved it. I purchased a couple other Richard Scarry books and "Cars and Trucks" has surfaced as the favorite, mainly because she loves searching for the gold bug in every scene. The other Richard Scarry books we own have the worm and bug hiding out here and there, but this is the only one that I've found, so ...

A Visitor for Bear13 reviews
Bonny Becker

Candlewick, 2008

A wonderful story about loneliness and friendship-perfect for preschoolers!
"A Visitor for Bear" is a perfect story for preschoolers and anyone else for that matter. It tells the story of Bear, a rather reclusive character who prefers to live alone, undisturbed and even posts a sign on his front door "No Visitors Allowed". Things change when bear gets a visit -from a persistent, cute little mouse who just won't take NO for an answer and keeps popping up in the ...
