Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, ...

HCI, 1997

nice book
my family got this as a gift about 8 years ago. I don't remember much about it but I remember the stories about the mother losing her son during a skiing accident, the girl who bought her mom bobby pins for her birthday and the story where they're celebrating a grandmother's birthday and she dies at the end of the party after seeing her entire family at the celebration.

Myrna Alexander, Ralph Alexander

Zondervan, 1978

Don't miss this awe-inspiring treasure of a study!!
This Bible study can be done alone or in a group. It will cause you to look at your God through the eyes of scripture and God's involvement with man. In a group, it is especially inspirational as you will be moved to a spirit of worship with the others who have been looking closely at this amazing God who loves us so very much! This study is NOT new, but it is a treasure for eternity. I did ...

Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul: Stories About Pets as Teachers, Healers, Heroes and Friends (Chicken ...90 reviews
Marty Becker, Carol Kline, ...

HCI, 1998

Warm and fuzzy
Most of the series of 'Chicken Soup for the Soul' has the kind of warm and fuzzy story that many find endearing and sweet. They are not 'deep' most of the time, but do point to things beyond themselves; for my own use, I often find sermon illustrations and stories within the pages of volumes of Chicken Soup -- as chaplain at a retirement centre, many of the stories help people to recall happier ...

Scipio Africanus42 reviews
B. H. Liddell Hart, Michael Grant

Da Capo Press, 1994

Innovative Commander.
First, the authors initial premise that the victor does not always get the credit is sadly true. Which dispells many myths revisionists have been spewing for decades. Aspiring leaders could learn much from this and the authors other books. Here he has created a great story outlining the exploits of one of the worlds most underated generals. Dare I say hardly known? Chapters 10 and 11 is where ...

Low-Fat Living: Turn Off the Fat-Makers Turn on the Fat-Burners for Longevity Energy Weight Loss Freedom from ...12 reviews
Robert K. Cooper, Leslie L. Cooper

Rodale Books, 1996

A Whole Systems Approach
My only complaint with this book is its title, "Low Fat Living." It goes far beyond that. This is really the "whole mind, whole body" approach to weight control and more. This book seems to be a collection of everything that the authors could find that contributes to weight loss, organized in an interesting and integrative manner. I particularly loved the study that showed that people watching ...

Hardcastle5 reviews
John Yount

Southern Methodist University Press, 1992

A simple but dramatic story, told beautifully
I'd never heard of John Yount before I picked up Hardcastle, but from the first page, I knew I could be in the grip of a special writer. Hardcastle is a simple but dramatic story, a sort of morality play, set in an rough Kentucky coal mining town during the Depression. The writing is also simple, but in the best sense, the way that the novels of some of the best American writers, like ...

The Prayer of Jabez for Teens (Breakthrough Series)12 reviews
Bruce Wilkinson

Multnomah Books, 2001

THE AMAZING PRAYER
THE AMAZING PRAYER Since hearing about Jabez, I walk around with a different composure, in a different mood. God wants to accomplish great things through us; he's just waiting for us to ask. Jabez's cry was that God would bless him so that he could bless others, change his generation, and change the world. God is trying to make you live like you never have before. God wants to inspire your ...

HENRY AND MUDGE AND THE BEDTIME THUMPS (Henry & Mudge Books)2 reviews
Cynthia Rylant

Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing, 1991

This great book is very supportive of new readers.
Massive Mudge is much more than a mere mutt. He is a tail-wagger, toenail-chewer, moth-eater, and breaker of grandmother's things. Most importantly however, he is Henry's best friend. Beginning readers will feel right at home amongst the words and illustrations of Rylant's tender story about a boy and his bog on a visit to grandmother's house. Unobtrusively, Stevenson's iluustrations harmonize ...

The positive power of Jesus Christ2 reviews
Norman Vincent Peale

Tyndale House, 1980

What a Book!
What a legacy! What a man! What a ministry! What a God he served. As the Bible says, his works continue to speak even though he (Dr. Peale) is no longer in this dimension. This book describes his secret. He writes, "...the simple affirmation of the love of God combined with human love possesses an astonishing healing property. Just love people in the name of Christ and in His spirit, and there is ...

Twenty-eight-year-old pediatric nurse Tess Morgan sometimes dresses as a clown to add a little cheer into the lives of the sick children in the hospital. And, truth be told, she could use a little cheering up in her own life as well. Ever since her fiancé had been murdered, she'd been sort of adrift, her faith kind of lost. The Records of the Federal Convention of 1787: 1937 Revised Edition in Four Volumes, Volume 3 (Yale ...2 reviews

Yale University Press, 1967

An ongoing review in four parts, part 1: What it is and how to prepare to read it.
I am rereading these after many years. In working my way through these volumes, I realized that these books require some preparation on the part of the reader. I thought I would therefore tell you exactly what these books are and make some suggestions for preparing to read them. As will become clear when I explain what they are, for me to critique them would be presumptuous and odd. WHAT THESE ...
