The 5,000-Year-Old Puzzle: Solving a Mystery at Giza2 reviews
Claudia Logan

Dk Pub (T), 2001

A creative and challenging exercise for young archeologists
In 1924, two years after the famous discovery of King Tut's tomb with its amazing treasures, Dr. George Reisner, a world-famous Egyptologist, is exploring an archaeological site known as Giza 7000X. Joining the dig is young Will Hunt. The conceit here is that while Will and his family are fictitious, the rest of the information about Giza 7000X is true. Reisner was the director of the Harvard ...

Chinese Jump Rope (Klutz)18 reviews

Klutz, 1997

Fun and Entertaining. Easy to Understand.
I bought this for my nieces, ages 9 and 6. The book was very easy to understand, and the 9 year old had them both playing in minutes! There are several versions of the game, and they were playing them all! Highly recommend this book!

Baj And the Word Launcher: Space Age Asperger Adventures in Communication9 reviews
Pamela Victor

Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2006

To the author: Please write another story!!
Our 7-year-old son just finished this book. He loved it. It was an exciting story that had him eager to turn the page. We recently decided to tell him that he has Asperger's Syndrome and it quickly became his excuse for all his difficulties. Through this book, he was able to understand that he is responsibile for his behavior and he has begun to see that he can maintain control. Best ...

Poems for 9 Year-Olds and Under (Puffin Books)1 review
Kit Wright

Penguin UK, 1999

Fun, laughter, nonsense.
No one should be put off by the title of this collection of poems. Kids many years beyond "9" will find much wonderful stuff here. And so will grown ups. Kit Wright, who's had the wisdom to include some of his own--and someof the book's best--poems, has provided a superb selection of poems that kids will love, and that parents will simply HAVE to read to them. There are lots of big names here ...

Artstarts for Little Hands: Frun and Discoveries for 3-7 Year-Olds1 review
Judy Press

Topeka Bindery, 2000

SAHM
This book is a must have for anyone with small childern. The crafts are fun and use normal craft items most found right in your home. It even offers book suggestions to match the craft(s) projects. There are easier craft ideas for the hard crafts that are towards the higher age group so that you can come back to that craft later but still do something with it now.

Stories For Eight-Year-Olds1 review

Faber & Faber, 1989

Stories for Eight-Year-Olds--Enchanting
This is a wonderful collection of classic stories -- ranging from Pegasus to Ali Baba and the 40 thieves to the Oriental tale: the Crocodile and the Monkey. My daughter, eight, was thoroughly enchanted and even my son, 11, enjoyed reading the book. Stories for Eight-Year-Olds will indeed charm and fascinate both your eight-year old as well as any younger or older readers in the family, too. I ...

Ecoart!: Earth-friendly Art & Craft Experiences For 3-to 9-year-olds (Williamson Kids Can Books)3 reviews
Laurie Carlson

Topeka Bindery, 2003

Laurie Carlson is Outstanding
I have just entered the field of preschool and was disappointed in the books for activities until I found Carlson. Her book isn't full of kiddie graphics as if the kids were reading, her instructions are clear and careful. This book is fun because it gives so many ideas of using things around the house. I liked this book so much that I bought 50 to give to preschool teachers coming to a ...

The Kid Who Climbed Everest: The Incredible Story of a 23-Year-Old's Summit of Mt. Everest29 reviews
Bear Grylls

The Lyons Press, 2004

Outstanding Tale by an Outstanding Human Being.
I have just finished TKWCE and I am totally blown away. I have been a fan of Bear Grylls ever since I saw my first episode of Man vs. Wild and this book has elevated him greatly in my eyes. He is a man to be admired. Bear's storytelling style made the entire book sound as though it was his interior monologue from Man vs. Wild which made for a quick and entertaining read. As a military man ...

Rebel without a Crew: 8Or How a 23-Year-Old Filmmaker with $7,000 Became a Hollywood Player117 reviews
Robert Rodriguez

Dutton Adult, 1995

Inspiration for film makers
As has been mentioned, this is a memoir about how Robert Rodriguez made his film "El Mariachi". I just finished it and was thoroughly fascinated by it. This is not a technical manual (although there is plenty of technical knowledge and "pearls of wisdom" to be gleaned from it) so much as it is a motivational book. It is also a book about seeing a project through to its completion, regardless of ...

Science Play: Beginning Discoveries for 2- To 6-Year Olds8 reviews
Jill Hauser

Bt Bound, 1999

Outstanding resource
My kids loved these fun learning activities. Enough to keep them busy through early childhood. Nothing canned here. . . all creative and discovery-focused. Makes biology and even physics accessable to very young children. You can't go wrong with this outstanding guide.

Edward Blishen

Topeka Bindery, 2004

Fab Book
We are a family of four children and have lived in three continents. We love the international flavor of this book and the variety of themes. It sparks my children's imaginations and they are delighted every time we take up the book. I highly recommend it to all children and hope they will enjoy the flavor of childhood from around the world.

Stories for Seven Year Olds and Other Young Readers1 review
Sara Corrin

Faber & Faber, 1987

Excellent bed-time "read aloud" stories.
Very good version of the Emperor's New Clothes. Lively, interesting, somewhat "old fashioned" vocabulary. Too difficult for easy-reading for our seven year olds, but they loved to hear the stories aloud.

The Kingfisher Treasury of Stories for Eight Year Olds (The Kingfisher Treasury of Stories)1 review
Edward Blishen, Nancy Blishen, ...

Kingfisher, 2004

Not a great book for Boys
This book has many instances as do all Kingfisher books regarding gender bending. It is not for boys impressionable boys to be reading such material. We threw ours out.

Too Old for This, Too Young for That!: Your Survival Guide for the Middle-School Years7 reviews
Harriet S. Mosatche, Karen Unger

Free Spirit Publishing, 2000

Great Advice Book
I received this book as a gift, and I read every single word. It contained really good advice that helped me to get through 6th grade. Now I'm better prepared for the rest of my time in middle school. The quotes made this book so interesting, and they were fun too. I keep the book on my desk so I can go back to the sections I need whenever I want.

Ice Mummy: The Discovery of a 5,000-Year-Old Man (Step into Reading)9 reviews
Mark Dubowski

Perfection Learning Prebound, 1999

The Mummy Returns (not the movie)
I Think the 5,000 year old Mummy is very good discovery. I never knew that there could be a Mummy in the alps or any other extremely cold moutain area. (I was just plain dumb about that). I Think that this book about the Ice Mummy is very good to learn about. (Besides King Tutankahamun). The Mummy, i realized can be almost anywhere, but not the USA. You can learn from this discovery, many of ...

Jellyfish Inside Out3 reviews
Michelle McKenzie

Monterey Bay Aquarium Press, 2003

Interesting and Engaging Book
My 5-year-old has always been interested in things related to ocean creatures. We've read quite a few books about jellyfish. This book is the best we've read - really engaging and informative. The photos are colorful, detailed and illustrate the ideas explained in the text. The book introduces 2 marine biologists who appear throughout the book with comments. My son was very interested in ...

Window Art Deluxe Refill Set (Klutz)13 reviews

Klutz, 2002

This kit works great!
My daughter has made a large variety of window clings for herself and several other people. The refill has a nice selection of colors. Including 2 bottles of black outlining paint is very helpful.

A Treasury of Stories for Seven Year Olds (A Treasury of Stories)1 review
Nancy Blishen, Edward Blishen

Kingfisher, 1994

For 7 year-olds?
This is the only book in the series that I have looked at, but I didn't understand the reasoning behind the editor's choice in selections. I found the text too small and too long to be read by 7-year olds. The subject matter was at times questionable for youngsters of this age. This is not to say that the selections are worthless. There were a few classics and a few that I had never read but ...

The Kingfisher Treasury of Stories for Seven Year Olds (The Kingfisher Treasury of Stories)2 reviews
Edward Blishen, Nancy Blishen, ...

Kingfisher, 2004

Great collection, almost . . .
I bought this book yesterday for an upcoming trip, thinking it would be a space-saver with 19 stories in one small paperback. (We read to our kiddos before bedtime every night, even when we travel.) Then I read the previous review today. The reviewer was right on. The story in the middle of the book, The Tale of the Silver Saucer and the Transparent Apple by Arthur Ransome, is much too graphic ...

Treasury of Stories for Six Year Olds2 reviews
Edward Blishen

Topeka Bindery, 2004

It's a Hit!
I was told that this book lives up to it's title, and I was told right! When I first looked through the stories I was unconvinced, but I began reading them to my six-year-old son anyway. He truly loved them! He requested them every night. His friends have enjoyed them just as much on sleep-overs. Something about these stories is directly in tune with this age group.
