The Lord of the Rings: 50th Anniversary, One Vol. Edition35 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2005

A Classic in Every Way
Full disclosure: I'm a fan that was brought in by the movies. Normally, I try to read a book before seeing it in movie form, but I was actually convinced not to in this case (more on that in a moment). Eventually, though, I watched the Peter Jackson film adaptations, loved them, and decided I'd like to get the full story. As a first-time LOTR reader, this edition looked like the best choice, as ...

The Lord of the Rings (50th Anniversary Edition)169 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2004

Very nice edition to have
This review is only about the `50th anniversary edition' and not about the master work of J.R.R.Tolkien. I don't see any issues with the quality of the book. Like few other reviewers mentioned, the folded map is glued together and you need to take little care while viewing it for the first time without damage. That is not an issue or a reason to give this excellent edition a poor rating. Most ...

The Evil and the Guilty (Great Books Foundation 50th Anniversary Series)1 review

Great Books Foundation, 1997

The Evil and the Guilty
Another great Great Books anthology! If you're like me, you'll be amazed to find yourself reading a selection from Musil's A Man without Qualities (a Big Famous Book I thought I'd never get near). I was equally surprised to find myself reading (and enjoying) the Rime of the Ancient Mariner. My book group enjoyed the shorter format of these selections - we used to read novels only, and we'd ...

The Lucky Baseball Bat: 50th Anniversary Commemorative Edition (Matt Christopher Sports Fiction)4 reviews
Matt Christopher

Little, Brown Young Readers, 2004

A tale of simpler, less hectic days
After reading the first couple of chapters of THE LUCKY BASEBALL BAT, I had to go back to the copyright page to see just when this book was written. After all, the hero of the story, a young boy named Martin and his younger sister Jeannie are invited into the house of Barry Welton, a teenager they had just met after Martin had an unfortunate incident on the ball field that left him sad and ...

Carl Djerassi

Oxford University Press, USA, 2004

On October 15, 1951, in a small laboratory in Mexico City, one of the key episodes in 20th century social history occurred: the first synthesis of a steroid oral contraceptive--an event that triggered the development of the Pill. Carl Djerassi has been honored worldwide for that accomplishment, which ultimately changed the life of women and the nature of human reproduction in ways that were not then foreseeable. Now, on the 50th ...

Identity and Self-Respect (The Great Books Foundation 50th Anniversary Series)1 review

Great Books Foundation, 1997

Identity and Self-Respect
This is a favorite anthology of mine from the Great Books Foundation. My book group isn't done with all the selections yet, but we've been impressed by the wide variety of writings, and how the questions for discussion really focus us on the literature. We're reading more seriously now and having better discussions. I was especially impressed with the questions for T.S. Eliot's Prufrock - a ...

Turning 50: Quotes, Lists, and Helpful Hints1 review
William K. Klingaman

Plume, 1994

James Joyce and the Dead/Portrait
To William Klingaman - you have ruined our lives. Since we took your class, we've been unhealthily interested in James Joyce - we just watched a movie called "Nora" about his wife. We didn't understand...ran to the computer, read a biography on James Joyce, and looked frantically for some criticism on the film to help explain it to us. We are now in pursuit of your email address so we can make ...

Worthwhile purchase
If you ever needed to know what all the muscles in the body were, where exactly they attached to the skeleton, what movement they created, and ways to test how strong they are this is the bible. As a physical therapist, this has been an invaluable book to have both as a student and as a clinician.

Elisabeth Edwards

Running Press, 2001

Excellent Source of Entertaining Information on I Love Lucy!
I received this book as a birthday present, and have enjoyed reading and looking through the numerous amounts of memorable pictures this book has to offer. It takes you through each episode, giving you little known facts about each episode, and provides excellent pictures from each episode. Anyone who is a fan of "I Love Lucy" show strongly consider buying this book!!!

Fly High, Fly Low (50th Anniversary ed.)1 review
Don Freeman

Puffin, 2007

Pigeon Love in San Francisco
No child growing up in the SF Bay Area should be deprived of this classic tale of love in the nation's most romantic city. Read it aloud to ages 3 to 6. Sid and Midge are pigeons who eat the bread crumbs from Blum's Bakery (now the Macy's Union Square entrance ...ugh) and enjoy the city together, particularly Union Square. Kids can really relate to Sid's plight on a horribly stormy day, when ...
