Journey through Genius: The Great Theorems of Mathematics 68 reviews William Dunham
Penguin (Non-Classics), 1991
Just what I've been looking for! First things first: You have to really like maths to appreciate this book. If you have ever wondered how to prove Pythagoras' theorem geometrically, or would like to find out how Archimedes estimated pi, this is the book for you. If not, buy another.
The book has a good mix of stories, explanations and mathematical proofs. It actually answered questions I have been wondering about for a long ...

A Promise to Ourselves: A Journey Through Fatherhood and Divorce 7 reviews Alec Baldwin
St. Martin's Press, 2008
The bitter fruits of our corrupt LAISSEZ-PERJURY justice system Alec Baldwin has written a great book that reveals the human side of divorce in a family court justice system that routinely condones and accomodates deceit, evidence withholding, and material misrepresentation - commonly known as PERJURY. Throughout civil, criminal, family, and probate courts in every county and state of the United States, the prosecution of perjury arising from witness ...

Oracle Bones: A Journey Through Time in China (P.S.) 24 reviews Peter Hessler
Harper Perennial, 2007
Cannot Recommend This Book Highly Enough This is an excellent book that should be read by anyone curious about present-day China and the economic juggernaut that they have become. The author looks at their situation not from the macro side (the big picture - China's economy is thus and thus, growing from this to that in X amount of time, etc.) but rather he looks at it from the micro side: through the stories of everyday folks who are ...

Stepping Up: A Journey Through the Psalms of Ascent, Member Book 17 reviews Beth Moore
LifeWay Christian Resources, 2007
Stepping Up: A Journey Through The Psalms of Ascent This was my first bible study and I thought it was great. Easy to follow and kept me hungry for more. I recommend it - the video is nice, but not necessary. I took the study through my church and found the quiet time study on my own plus discussion later in my group were enough. The video only added more insight into Beth's take on the three feasts.

Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction 115 reviews David Sheff
Houghton Mifflin Co, 2008
A beautiful boy The author is wonderfully expresses his pain about his loving son. I also have a daughter the same age whose drug of choice is heroin. The book opened my eyes to go to Hazeleden to joint the parents program and to go to Al-Anon.
In short I thank the author so much for being an inspiration to me.

Center Cannot Hold, The: My Journey Through Madness 63 reviews Elyn R. Saks
Hyperion, 2008
An amazing woman has written an eye-opening book No review is going to do justice to this incredible book by Elyn Saks, an academic dean, tenured law school and medical school professor, psychoanalysis student, and, not incidentally, a raving (at times of stress or change) schizophrenic. For readers who assume schizophrenics live out their lives, if we can really call their bare existences lives, shackled literally by physical restraints or ...

Richistan: A Journey Through the American Wealth Boom and the Lives of the New Rich 64 reviews Robert Frank
Three Rivers Press, 2008
Amusing Anthropological Analysis of Astronomically Affluent Mr. Frank does an excellent job of presenting an overview of this rarefied subculture. Base insecurities of the human condition are displayed by this obscenely wealthy crowd's habitual one-upmanship social gatherings, Freudian obsessions with having the biggest yacht, mansion or whatever and rarely being satisfied with what they have accrued. A great deal of credit must be given to Mr. Frank for ...

Love & Death: My Journey through the Valley of the Shadow 6 reviews Forrest Church
Beacon Press, 2008
The Meaning of Life (and Death) If you are a person who reads the obituaries then this book is for you! And not because you have a morbid fascination with death, but most likely as a result of your interest in life. How long did they live? What did they accomplish? How did it end? Was it too soon?
This book is about living, or as Rev. Church says, "To live in such a way that our lives will prove worth dying for."

Journey Through Space (DK READERS) 2 reviews Ryder Windham
DK CHILDREN, 2005
The geography of Star Wars The release of Star Wars books for young people has always been related to a theatrical promotion. In a world that has a seen all six films, a new wave of DK Readers is much appreciated. It gives us comfort that even though the movies are finished, the Star Wars experience isn't completely 'done.' "Journey Through Space" isn't actually about space travel. It's about the places one can travel to ...

Serve the People: A Stir-Fried Journey Through China 7 reviews Jen Lin-Liu
Harcourt, 2008
Amazing book! Once I starting reading this book, I couldn't put it down. It is the story about a Chinese-American who goes to China on a Fulbright scholarship as part of her journalism career and ends up riding her bike down a narrow street to take cooking classes. The story (both humorous and touching) is told through her quest to learn about authentic Chinese cuisine both past and present, home cooking and ...

Balkan Ghosts: A Journey Through History 121 reviews Robert D. Kaplan
Picador, 2005
Excellent and broad sweeping introduction to the Balkans Robert Kaplan's Balkan Ghosts is more than a travel book for most of his experiences in the Balkan's were far from tourism. Rather, like Rebecca West's Black Lamb and Grey Falcon, his book explores time and place with the precision of an anthropologist.
Kaplan points out that this area of the world seems to have a talent for starting wars and once was called `ethnic trash' by Karl Marx. ...

Come Back: A Mother and Daughter's Journey Through Hell and Back (P.S.) 79 reviews Claire Fontaine, Mia Fontaine

A Real Girl In a world that obsesses over teen-age addiction and which paints the Britneys, Lindsays, Amys and Olsens as glamorous beauty queens with tragic yet excusable addictions, it is both heart breaking and heart warming to read about an honest-to-goodness real girl who overcomes both a difficult childhood and substance abuse and obtains love and stability on her own terms. I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do
Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go..."

Weapons of Mass Instruction: A Schoolteacher's Journey through the Dark World of Compulsory Schooling John Taylor Gatto
New Society Publishers, 2008
John Taylor Gatto's Weapons of Mass Instruction focuses on mechanisms of familiar schooling that cripple imagination, discourage critical thinking, and create a false view of learning as a by-product of rote-memorization drills. Gatto's earlier book, Dumbing Us Down , put that now-famous expression of the title into common use worldwide. Weapons of Mass Instruction promises to add another chilling metaphor to the brief against schooling. ...
