All American Ads of the 20's (Midi Series) 6 reviews Steven Heller
Taschen, 2004
I just couldn't resist this one... I finally caved in and bought this volume in the _All-American Ads_ series, and now I'm going to have to buy the others. I'm doomed.
I'm in love with this book, and there's a lot to love about it. The production values are outstanding--the colors are brilliant, the images as crisp as they can be, and the selection of ads is wonderfully varied. It's a visual treat--Taschen has done it again.

All-American Ads 30s (Midi) 4 reviews Jim Heimann
Taschen, 2003
Hucksters in hard times. Taschen's fourth volume of the All-American Ads series provides a big look back to the day before yesterday. Steven Heller provides a short overview of the decade and explains that despite the Depression magazines, in which most of these ads appeared, had very high circulations. For a few cents readers could escape the reality of everyday life and be entertained by the features and the ...

All-American Ads 40s (Icons Series) 5 reviews
Taschen, 2003
Capitalism at work...forties style. Another massive collection of colorful magazine advertisements from Taschen. This is the same format as the first book in this series,'All-American Ads 50s', hundresd and hundreds of whole page consumer magazine ads (there are a few pages with two or four) beautifull printed. As this edition covers the war years, 111 pages carry ads by American companies explaining how they are doing their bit ...

Roy H. Williams where are the Secret Formulas to the Wizard of Ads? Hey Roy Williams, where are the "Secret Formulas" to the Wizard of Ads? After reading the first book by Roy H. Williams (The Wizard of Ads) I needed to know more and my mind was asking more questions than ever.

All American Ads of the 60's (Midi Series) 9 reviews Jim Heimann
Taschen, 2002
Space Age meets the Hippie Wow! was my first reaction upon devouring these heavy, nearly one thousand, slick pages of incredibly square, hip, liberal, conservative, and completely cool advertising. Some of the fashions, hairstyles, designs, attitudes, and language that you'll encounter will make you laugh, cry, deeply ponder, and wonder how the world could have changed so much since that era. The book begins with a ...

All American Ads of the 80's (Midi S.) 3 reviews
Taschen, 2005
The wallpaper of capitalism The seventh book in the fascinating Taschen 'All-American Ads' series and as editor Jim Heimann says in his short introduction, print creativity wasn't exactly sparkling in the Eighties. Television took most of the ad budget leaving print to soak up what was left with ads that reinforced what had been seen on the small screen. Still, some ads did capture the consumer's imagination, do you ...

Twenty Ads That Shook the World: The Century's Most Groundbreaking Advertising and How It Changed Us All 6 reviews James B. Twitchell
Three Rivers Press, 2001
Fascinating 20 ads from the last century which are fascinating to examine. Each may appear simple on the surface, but as Twitchell closely analyses these ads he reveals that they are profound in nature. As a museum of art has great pictures, a museum of advertising would include these 20 profound ads. These are ads which even today stand out as great successful works of advertising even though the product ...

The Wizard of Ads: Turning Words into Magic and Dreamers into Millionaires 44 reviews Roy H. Williams
Bard Press, 1998
Does Roy H. Williams ( (( Really know )) ) what he's talking about? Prior to reading this first of three books I wondered does Roy H. Williams really know what he's talking about? (I guess when you become a Read-o-holic and you've read more than a few thousand books you began to wonder is this all a game? A game of money for books or what.)
My second thought was has this man compiled some great stories illustrating some pre-used concepts on Marketing? You ...

All-American Ads 1900-1919 (Midi S.) 3 reviews
Taschen, 2005
Very soft sell The ninth and final volume in this fascinating series of American advertising. If like me you have collected the set your bookcase is supporting just over six thousand pages, which contain at least fifteen thousand ads, all beautifully printed on quality paper.
This last book, though is just on the fringes of my interest but it does have some lovely ad artwork. I was expecting to be ...

The Male Mystique: Men's Magazine Ads of the 1960s and '70s 1 review Jacques Boyreau
Chronicle Books, 2004
The Macho Man Revisted The Male Mystique offers an illuminating study of the "real man" archetype on which so many of us guys were raised: a hostile, arrogant, emotionally crippled ninny, slowly destroying himself with booze and cigarettes while being fawned over by non-threatening, sexually compliant child-women who somehow manage to be even dumber than he is. Not a pretty picture. However, the most disturbing element ...

All-American Ads of the 70s (All American Ads) 5 reviews
Taschen, 2004
Too recent to be truly memorable. All-American Ads of the Seventies adds another 702 pages to the 3418 pages in the first four books and only the Ads of the Twenties remains to be published. This latest book is really the weakest of the set though. As editor Jim Heimann explains in his intro, the Seventies print media lacked creative sparkle because television had captured most ad dollars. He also mentions the important point ...

Academic insights meet practical application Ted Brader's "Campaigning for Hearts and Minds: How Emotional Appeals in Political Ads Work" drives yet another nail into the coffin of academic wisdom that voters are either rational decision-makers or complacent habit-following creatures by providing compelling evidence for the role of emotions in political campaigns. Remember Those Great Volkswagen Ads? (Na) 1 review Alfredo Marcantonio
Harriman House, 2008
Love it I think I forgot how good the advertising for Volkswagen was. I mean, I guess our perception of the brand has to come from somewhere! This book has all the great ads from the 60's and 70's. I've been an ad-man for some time, and this book is pretty famous in our circles for being the first car ads (or any ads really) to be honest to the consumer. Most importantly I've been a VW owner for 15 ...

Cool book...but... Ordered this cute cook for a girlfriend of mine who's a fashion freak. The book itself is unique and cool, but it arrived with a big cut down the middle of the front of the book! Couldn't even give it to her. I'll hang on to it, but sure hope no one else receives one in that condition.
