Creating a Private Foundation: The Essential Guide for Donors and Their Advisers4 reviews
Roger D. Silk, James W. Lintott

Bloomberg Press, 2003

Useful Primer
Unwitting new philantrophists sometimes end up with bureaucratic creatures that do exactly what the donor did not want. This book is full of practical advice on how to avoid unpleasant surprises if you set up a foundation of your own, such as finding out that you have no control over its activities. It also gives a succinct review of investment problems. Foundations can potentially last for many ...

Desert Queen: The Extraordinary Life of Gertrude Bell: Adventurer, Adviser to Kings, Ally of Lawrence of ...58 reviews
Janet Wallach

Anchor Books, 2005

Illuminating and timely
It's remarkable that a book written about events that took place 100 years ago has direct relevance to today, but that's just one of the many strengths of "Desert Queen." When you read about Gertrude Bell's political savvy about Iraq and the stubborness of the male politicians who ignored her advice, well, the parallels are obvious. The biggest takeaway for me was imagining Bell's life ...

Retirement Income Redesigned: Master Plans for Distribution: An Adviser's Guide for Funding Boomers' Best ...7 reviews

Bloomberg Press, 2006

Money Well Spent
I have read over two dozen books on investing and retirement planning and this is among my favorites. First, there are few books which talk to the subject of distribution (as opposed to accumulation) strategies. Second, the authors have chosen to allow other experts to contribute to their book - 25 of them to be precise. So you are not just getting the advice of one or two people, but the ...

The Queen's Conjurer: The Science and Magic of Dr. John Dee, Adviser to Queen Elizabeth I13 reviews
Benjamin Woolley

Holt Paperbacks, 2002

Dr. John Dee- Mathematician and Mystic
I have always found Dr. John Dee to be one of the most intriguing characters of Elizabethan times. Yet, there seemed to be so little information available about him, only bits and pieces and rumors- often spread by his enemies. Here is a most satisfying biography that not only gives you a complete look at the Doctor's life, but is also supplemented with a wealth of associated detail and ...

Baby Name Encyclopedia: The Perfect Baby Name Adviser15 reviews
Sylvie Nicole

Virtualbookworm.com Publishing, 2005

The ultimate book of baby's names!
This was one of the most useful and interesting baby naming books I've read! This book is a jewel of a find! I've flipped through and purchased countless baby name books. This is BY FAR my favorite. It's perfectly organized, well-written, insightful and incredibly helpful. It goes into much more detail than the books that just list names. It includes thousands of names from all over the world ...

School Newspaper Adviser's Survival Guide6 reviews
Patricia Osborn, Osborn

Jossey-Bass, 1998

The only book of its kind
Having been a high school newspaper adviser (notice, "adviser" and not "advisor"?) for 8 years, I am like the other reviewer who wishes this book would have been available much earlier. As it is, my first year of teaching in 1993 included four preps: English 10 Honors, English 9, newspaper, and yearbook. (Anybody want to say "Year of Insanity"?) While I did survive, I struggled that year because ...

The Model 1911 and Model 1911A1 Military and Commercial Pistols2 reviews
Joe Poyer

North Cape Publications, Inc., 2008

Best reference in print!
I picked this up at the NGD in Louisville It is an excellent stand alone reference and a compliment to the Clawson volume. And with Karl Karash involved you know it will be accurate. $40.00 well spent and more bang for the buck compared to Clawsons book now over 700. The only downside is it's paperback and won't stand up to daily use.

Clients for Life: Evolving from an Expert-for-Hire to an Extraordinary Adviser9 reviews
Jagdish N. Sheth, Andrew Sobel

Free Press, 2002

Essential for any consultant.
As a consultant, this book helped me focus on behaviors aimed at building a long-term practice rather than simply going from success-to-success. I say this not to toot my own horn (yes, I've had failures too) but rather because most decent consultants actually do OK--clients are generally happy. We appear to succeed on a regular basis. The great consultants, however, are the ones who build vocal ...

Family Wealth--Keeping It in the Family: How Family Members and Their Advisers Preserve Human, Intellectual, ...19 reviews
James E. Hughes Jr.

Bloomberg Press, 2004

Clear, concise and THOROUGH
This is the BEST book I have found (after looking a long time) to instruct those who understand AND believe in themselves in how to perpetuate their ideals. While I may not fully share the author's bias (clearly described in an opening chapter), I emphatically endorse his diagram for perpetuation. This book is a treasure map for the future. Gotta run.....hunting for treasure, y'know....

To Change China: Western Advisers in China4 reviews
Jonathan D. Spence

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1980

vely vely useful
For a Western head going to China with something in mind other than just making money, touring about, or slipping into uncritical fascination, this is perhaps the wisest book available. Here is old Spence at his best: good scholarship and wonderful storytelling. It covers the lives of a handful of remarkable men struggling to bring their vision to bear in notoriusly difficult country. Many ...

How can decisionmakers charged with protecting the environment and the public's health and safety steer clear of false and misleading scientific research? These are just some of the many controversial and timely questions that Sheila Jasanoff asks in this study of the way ...
