Alan Brennert

St. Martin's Griffin, 2004

Very touching
I found this to be a very good book. Very well written and a very good story line. It was very touching. I felt like I was there seeing all of this happen.I felt so sorry for this character. It shows no matter what happens in life, good can come out of it. No matter what ailments befall us, we can make it through anything if we have the right attitude. We are all survivors in some way.

Night Soldiers: A Novel58 reviews
Alan Furst

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2002

Integrity in a world gone mad
As an espionage writer, Furst excels at capturing characters' emotions, and the atmosphere in which they are acting. As the action progresses from country to country, and year to year (1934-1945), each milieu has its own distinctive personality, geography and history. The overall theme is the protagonist's attempt to maintain his integrity in a world gone mad. There is a certain amount of ...

The Spies of Warsaw: A Novel71 reviews
Alan Furst

Random House, 2008

All the great Furst ambience and a better plot than usual
Although I told myself I wouldn't, I finally did break down and pay hardcover price for Alan Furst's latest. I just can't stay away from Furst novels, nor can I imagine why I'd want to. There's still lots of atmosphere and a more recognizable plot than some of his novels have. This takes place in Warsaw and France, and the protagonist is French. Writing France of this period is Furst's ...

The Uncommon Reader: A Novella89 reviews
Alan Bennett

Picador, 2008

Go ahead...read this book!
Go ahead...read this book. It will only take an evening or two, and, even though it's about Queen Elizabeth II, it's just plain fun. And I laughed out loud when I bumped into the last page. Fantastic (but don't dare peek or the rest will be ruined). This is a not-so-serious book about falling in love with reading, learning what you can from it, and then getting on with what's next. If you ...

The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World271 reviews
Alan Greenspan

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2008

Insightful, Informative & Interesting
As a staunch advocate of free-market capitalism and deregulation, Greenspan has captured and reasoned the core economic beliefs and values he holds in this book - democracy coupled with capitalism improves quality of life. The first half of the book took us through Greenspan's journey from a child of being obsessed with keeping baseball statistics, to a Julliard music student and finally ...

The World Without Us248 reviews
Alan Weisman

Picador, 2008

Interesting "What If?" Look at the World
A very well written and captivating look at Mother Earth's response to the disappearance of humans. I felt the author did a fantastic job at educating the reader on the devastating impact of important human discoveries that we take for granted today. It really will make you think twice about bringing home a plastic bag from the grocery store. I also enjoyed the limitation of religious ...

Red Gold: A Novel21 reviews
Alan Furst

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2002

"Red Gold" -- A Platinum Spy Thriller From a Master of the Genre
Alan Furst is a master of the spy novel and, given the texture and substance he gives his characters, we are often left wondering what ultimately happened to them. In this case (and perhaps only this case), the life of a main character continues into a second novel. "Red Gold" picks up where "The World at Night" left off and quenches our thirst for further details of the life of French ...

Dark Star: A Novel50 reviews
Alan Furst

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2002

An honest masterpiece of ambience
Alan Furst's "Dark Star" bravely addresses two taboos of the 20th century history: the intrinsic but carefully camouflaged evil of communism and the role of Jewish individuals (quite a few of them) in, first, propagating it and then falling victim to it. At the same time, however, the novel masterfully conveys the tragic choice laying before the conscientious people who lived in those dark times, ...

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 1120 reviews
Alan Moore

America's Best Comics, 1999

Excellent
I'll be honest. I saw the movie before I read the book. But the movie doesn't hold a candle to the book. I did like Wilhelmina Harker's portrayal in the movie, but in all cases, the book was far superior to the movie. I really enjoyed the art and storylines, and am sad there are only two books to this series, aside the Black Dossier.

Alan Furst

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2007

Evocation of another world
Furst is brilliant at character study, but more than that, he delivers you into another world. Pre-World II Europe becomes present. For anybody who's interested in those years of upheaval, extraordinary courage as well as human frailty and sinister ideologies, please get any of his extraordinary books.

The Wisdom of Insecurity51 reviews
Alan W. Watts

Vintage, 1968

The Book Changed/Grew My Life Perception
This book was one of my "bibles" when I was 15 years old. I remember turning the pages in awe, wonder, inspiration and the joy of clarity found. It told me what I already knew but needed BADLY to be told and it told me things in ways I had never thought. One of my most lingering and favorite images from the book is his talking about the pain you feel when you stub your toe. How the knee-jerk ...

Alan Moore's Writing For Comics Volume 116 reviews
Alan Moore, Jacen Burrows

Avatar Press, 2003

Worth It: Half Way Done.
Worth it. I am a striving comic creator who works and won't have time to read as much as I did this last summer. If you're a striving comic creator this is great book about the medium not because it teaches you how to write, but because it invokes you to create. The things I already knew that Moore talks about helps reinforce good points of story telling while interjecting Moore's insights to ...

Stirring Memoirs...

Even with our technically superior computer generated, the memories and emotions that real soldiers lived through cannot be equalled. Alan Cope and Emmanuel Guibert met by happenstance, and the collaboration that resulted is marvelous. Alan Cope tells us through Emmanuels' art his life as a soldier. The Polish Officer: A Novel48 reviews

In darker times
A good book. The main character is a little cold compared with others by Furst. The book does keep the tension up though.

Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I've Learned106 reviews
Alan Alda

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2006

Alan Alda at his best!!
First of all, let me start out by saying that I have been in love with "Hawkeye Pierce" since girlhood. I grew up watching reruns of M*A*S*H and wishing I was a nurse, girlfriend, or anyone who could be close to this dynamic persona that was Alan Alda. I purchased the book, eager to know more of my childhood crush and was not disappointed. Alan Alda has a sincere writing style that makes you ...
