Kindred (Bluestreak Black Women Writers)170 reviews
Octavia E. Butler

Beacon Press, 2004

An Excellent Introduction to this Writer
Unfortunately, this inspired writer recently died. I encourage ALL to review her works. This novel was my introduction to Octavia E. Butler, and I would advise any enthusiasts of speculative and science fiction to investigate it, and her multiple works!

A Million Little Pieces1819 reviews
James Frey

Anchor, 2005

saved my life
I wrote a review years ago after I read this book. Still today, regardless of all the notoriety, I give thanks to James for writing this book. Unless someone has walked in the shoes of very early sobriety and recovery from drug addiction as well as alcohol abuse there can be no understanding of how powerful this book is. Bottom line: it saved my life and my MIND. Without this book God only ...

Good in Bed753 reviews
Jennifer Weiner

Washington Square Press, 2002

Delightful and believable
I won't reiterate the plot because that's already been done. A friend sent me 2 of Jennifer Weiner's books, "Goodnight Nobody" and this book, "Good In Bed", is the first I've read so far. I found it hilarious, touching, romantic, tragic and most of all, believable. I consider myself lucky that I've not had to deal with weight issues, but Jennifer Weiner's writing style is so superb, I could ...

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down207 reviews
Anne Fadiman

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1998

great book
This was an outstanding book. You may need to be a social anthropologist at heart to really love it, but the book was so enlightening on so many different levels. The background and customs of the Hmong are fascinating, and their clash with western culture is eye opening. I learned so much, not just about the Hmong, but about my own beliefs.

Baby Proof231 reviews
Emily Giffin

St. Martin's Griffin, 2007

Baby Proof
This was the first book I read by Emily Giffin and the first time I have even heard of her. All I can say is she is AWESOME!!!! I loved this book so much I couldn't put it down, and I went out bought Something Borrowed and Something Blue. The details that she gives, the story lines that she writes is just amazing! She really keeps you wanting more and that is what I love. She is my favorite ...

Shopaholic & Baby181 reviews
Sophie Kinsella

Dial Press Trade Paperback, 2007

Smart, Fun Chick Lit
This is the first book that I've read from the Shopaholic series. I adore the idea of light summer reading, but I've found myself disappointed by the other chick lit options I've tried in the past. I purchased this book in part because we are considering trying to become pregnant this summer; I figured that even if the writing was tepid, the topic would hold my interest. I was pleasantly ...

The Kite Runner2399 reviews
Khaled Hosseini

Riverhead Trade, 2004

I loved it!!!
This book was outstanding and the new film did it justice. As a teacher/librarian, I would love to suggest this book to my students, but it is hard when a movie has been produced. I am not mad. I understand that most great movies come from heart warming books. So all we can do now is try to read the books before the movies are produced. This book is something great, if you have not seen the ...

Shopaholic Takes Manhattan316 reviews
Sophie Kinsella

Dell, 2004

The Audioversion is Outstanding
LOVE Emily Gray's reading of the book. She really brings Becky to life and is quite entertaining...hillarious. A real treat. I read the first book and did audio for the second. I may go back and listen to the first as I enjoyed it so much.

Naked Economics: Undressing the Dismal Science122 reviews
Charles Wheelan

W. W. Norton & Company, 2003

So easy, even a caveman could do it
I thought this was a very good introduction to economics for the layman. Wheelan purports to explain the subject without all the mind-numbing charts and economics jargon and he succeeds in doing just that. My initial reaction to the book was that Wheelan was merely an apologist for unfettered capitalism but it turned out to be a relatively objective work. He gives both sides of the story so to ...

Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition25 reviews
David L. Nelson, Michael M. Cox

W. H. Freeman, 2004

Very complete biochemistry textbook
What I like the most about this book is that it contains almost all the information that you need to understand biochemistry, information that is not traditionally covered in biochemistry books, but that is needed as background to a complete understanding of the subject. For instance, the first chapter of this book gives background information on the biological, chemical, genetics, evolution ...

The Healthy College Cookbook: Quick. Cheap. Easy.56 reviews
Alexandra Nimetz, Jason Stanley, ...

Storey Publishing, LLC, 1999

Easy to Use
This was an impulse buy that I haven't regretted. It is perfect for the beginning cook or the harried college student. My only complaint is that it doesn't lay flat but that is obvious when you buy it.

Investing in Liquid Assets: Uncorking Profits in Today's Global Wine Market2 reviews
David Sokolin, Alexandra Bruce

Simon & Schuster, 2008

the only book you need on the subject
A book like this is long overdue. It's both authoritative and readable--a rare combination. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in investment grade wine, whether casually or professionally.

When Darkness Comes (Guardians of Eternity, Book 1)28 reviews
Alexandra Ivy

Zebra, 2007

This is a great book
This book is amazing. Is a "dark" story, with vampires, witches and what-not, but it also has a nice sense of humor and irony, coming from the mouths of the two main characters, Abby and Dante. I also like Viper, a very prominent secondary character (who's going to be the main character of the following book, yay!), who's a dark and powerful vampire. The plot is a nice inventive, which I very ...

Roxie and the Hooligans4 reviews
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor

Aladdin, 2007

Survival of the fittest (i.e. person with the largest ears)
Shhh! Don't make so much noise. I don't want you to scare it off. What I am holding in my hand, at this very moment, is something so rare and precious that I'm afraid to make any sudden movements for fear of startling it. What we are witnessing is the very rarely sighted Phyllis Reynolds Naylor stand alone children's book. It's not part of a series or the first in a great long line of ...

The Legend of Colton H. Bryant3 reviews
Alexandra Fuller

Penguin Press HC, The, 2008

A must read.
There is a Talmudic expression "He who destroys a life, destroys a world entire." Alexandra Fuller captured a "world" from beginning to end. By the end of it, and after it...you are set to wondering about every anonymous teenager you see working in a fast food joint - for that was one memory I had of Wyoming - but it might as well be anywhere these days . You wonder about the things they are ...

Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood176 reviews
Alexandra Fuller

Random House Trade Paperbacks, 2003

A surprisingly great read!
I found this in audio at an audio rental store. The front intrigued me so I read the back and decided to give it a go. I liked it so much that my husband decided he wanted to listen to it too! What an interesting life to have lead at such a young age!

cute!cute!cute!
Another really cute Shopoholic book. It won't win a Pulizer, but it will keep you entertained. It's a funny, light read and the characters are endearing.
