Coyote's Wife: An Ella Clah Novel (Ella Clah)1 review
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2008

engaging Navaho police procedural
On the Navaho Reservation in New Mexico, everyone is appalled by the brutal assault of Ervin Benally. Most people assume the beating was in direct reaction to Benally planning to install StarTalk on the reservation. This satellite phone system would enable instant cheap communication across the reservation. Navajo Tribal Police Officer Ella Clah investigates the brutal incident. She quickly ...

Changing Woman: An Ella Clah Novel (Ella Clah)2 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2003

excellent Southwest mystery
Life on the Navaho reservation in New Mexico is never easy but this winter is particularly hard. The weather is abnormally cold, unemployment is up, and many people are forced to choose between eating and heating up their homes. The Tribal Council, responsible for the welfare of the people on the reservation, debates whether to legalize gambling as a way of bringing in revenue. Navaho ...

The Enemy Way: An Ella Clah Novel (Ella Clah)7 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 1999

ONE OF THE BEST
I am prompted to write this review in rebuttal to the person in Colorado that reviewed this book, giving it one star. I can not believe that we read the same book. I live in New Mexico and feel the Thurlo's discriptions of New Mexico and the Navajo way of life are researced well and portray things as they really are. I doubt that the person in Colorado has ever been out of the "big city" and ...

White Thunder: An Ella Clah Novel (Ella Clah)7 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2005

Another great Ella Clah book....
The Ella Clah series is one of my favorite law enforcement series! Ella is a Special Investigator for the Navajo Police Department. While each book in the series builds on the previous ones in terms of character development, each book is also a stand alone novel. This novel begins with Navajo Police Chief Big Ed Atcitty informing Ella that a new FBI agent, Andrew Thomas, is missing after ...

Bad Medicine: An Ella Clah Novel (Ella Clah)5 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2005

A great work in a great series
Navaho tribal investigator Ella Clah is isolated form the Navaho community she is sworn to protect because of her FBI training and her family heritage of being vessels of powerful magic. Ella herself is torn between the traditional beliefs of her people and the scientific method employed in the Anglo world. When the Anglo miners form the Brotherhood, a group that preaches hatred and ...

Turquoise Girl: An Ella Clah Novel (Ella Clah)7 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2008

The Turquoise Girl
Once again the Thurlo's have given us a great mystery. This book is a continuation of their great Ella Clah series and one of the best. If you like Tony Hillerman, Margaret Coel, and Michael McGarrity, then this series is for you. I strongly suggest that you start with the first book of the series and read them straight thru.

Blood Memory (Berkley Prime Crime Mysteries)8 reviews
Margaret Coel

Berkley Hardcover, 2008

Not quite Father John O'Maley and Vicki Holden
I am a long-time fan of the Windy River Reservation mystery series, and I was a bit disappointed when I got this book to see that it's about a different heroine. But Coel can write, and she sprinkles such fascinating native and Arapaho history in her books, so I decided to read it. I enjoyed the book, but it didn't grip me like Father John. Catherine McLeod, I think, will grow into an ...

Shooting Chant: An Ella Clah Novel7 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2000

Ella returns
I've been a fan of the Ella Clah novels from the beginning, and they just keep getting better and better. This one combines a complex mystery and Ella's personal problems. Even having a baby isn't entirely a personal matter when you factor in the relationships among the Navajo clans and the legendary past of Ella's family. The Thurlos do a terrific job of showing us the problems and ...

Death Walker: An Ella Clah Novel (Ella Clah)3 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2003

Don't start it, if you don't have time to finish it.
As an avid Tony Hillerman fan, I loved this book. It may even surpass many of his efforts. The story grabs you from the start and makes one want to read it through without stopping. Hopefully, we will now have a more steady flow of Navajo-Rez mysteries and lore with both Hillerman and the Thurlo's churning them out.

Tracking Bear: An Ella Clah Novel (Ella Clah)3 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2004

great police procedural
Money is scarce on the Navaho reservation and the lack of funds in the police department means less officers and increasingly faulty and out of date equipment. Officer Frankin calls in a possible burglary in progress and requests help but the broken radio stopped working before he can give a location. By the time Ella Clah, the officer in charge of the special investigations unit, finds him, he ...

Wind Spirit: An Ella Clah Novel (Ella Clah)6 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2004

A Craftily Written Novel Rich in Navajo History
Aimee and David Thurlo have added a ninth installment to their Ella Clah series. These novels take place on a Four Corners, New Mexico reservation where Clah is a special investigator for the Navajo Tribal Police. Her family is "traditionalist" and her brother Clifford is a respected hataalli, or medicine man, who at the start of the book is singing hatals. "These songs of blessing compelled the ...

Mourning Dove: An Ella Clah Novel (Ella Clah)7 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2007

Navajo culture
Well paced mystery as usual with the Thurlos. I like that they sprinkle in bits & pieces of Navajo culture into the story. The end of the mystery of the death of the soldier did not turn out as I thought it would. What happens with Ella's romance? I guess I will have to purchase the next book to find out.

Red Mesa (Ella Clah)4 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2002

A long running mystery where the heroine becomes the villain
Navaho Police Special Investigator Ella Clah and her cousin, police officer Justine Goodluck loudly argue in public over a recent incident. When a few days later, Justine's burnt bones are found partially buried on the top of RED MESA, everyone, including some members of her own family, conclude that Ella killed Justine. Even Ella's beloved mother believes her daughter has turned evil and wants ...

Plant Them Deep (Rose Destea a Rose Novel)8 reviews
Aimee Thurlo, David Thurlo

Forge Books, 2003

Best Ever
This book is the best work by the Thurlos. It is great to get to know Ella's mother Rose so much better. The book wonderfully illustrates the plight of indigenous peoples when dealing with the outside world's pressure to take their land's natural resources, and brings the plant people to the forefront of the story.
