A portable reminder
The reviews of this book on Amazon and elsewhere are comprehensive on its strengths and weaknesses. We used it to research our trip to Peru, consulted it on the ground at Machu Picchu even though we had a very good guide, and have re-read it as a memory aid on our return home. We've heavily annotated Wright's book, both before and at Machu Picchu. It's been a great help in writing captions for ...

Museums are not bad
Anyone who has ever been enthralled visiting one of the world's great archeological museums would benefit from James Cuno's book. So would archaeologists, museum directors, curators, antiquities dealers...and journalists who have signed on to the out-of-control drumbeat demonizing museums and collectors. Source country bureaucrats and power-wielders should read it as well, but they probably ...

Marking time
Since the first finds of ancient cave art in Spain at the end of the 19th Century, researchers have sought to understand what prompted them. Various theories, from "hunting magic" to links to spirits have been put forward. Dale Guthrie, with many years experience in the field to draw upon, argues a new idea. Searching for "hidden meaning", he contends, is a false trail. Instead, he wants the ...

What a complex, diverse, populous world was lost!
Most of what the public is taught in schools about Indians (or Native Americans) is wrong. In _1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus_ author Charles C. Mann sought to dispel many of the myths, cherished and otherwise, about what the inhabitants and their civilizations were like before the Europeans arrived. Though some of these revelations he admits aren't "new" (some of the older ...

Well Constructed and Visually Engaging
I've been picking through the gamut of Greek myth texts for an introductory course, and I was fortunate to come across this beauty. It's not just a mythology text that the art historian can use, it's the ONLY classical myth "textbook" I have encountered that could legitimately appeal to art history classes. There are illustrations (usually color photos) on every page. The quality of the pages ...

A book to treasure!!
I am a life-long Egyptology buff, and co-author of a novel, Secret of the Sands, that is set in Egypt and I was absolutely thrilled to receive this as a Christmas present one year. It has sat proudly showcased on my main bookshelf ever since. Not only is it a lovely book to look at, the design of its interior is like leafing through the personal notebook of an Egypt-traveller. Its fun design ...

An enjoyable romp through pop archaeology
Hero's that combine Bond and Indy, take us on an enjoyable adventure across the world. Mr. Reilly provides the reader with well written action in a whirlwind of plot progression. This is my first experience in reading his novels, and I was pleased to find a light read that provided fun without being pulp. I would recommend this for a good `beach book'.

Meeting Alfred Kropp in THE EXTRAORDINARY ADVENTURES OF ALFRED KROPP really was extraordinary! Then I eagerly read THE SEAL OF SOLOMON, wondering what could surpass the thrill of Alfred first stealing, then losing, and then recovering Excalibur, King Arthur's sword. The author, Rick Yancey, didn't let the reader down. Alfred was forced to fight demons! So, naturally, I couldn't wait to read THE ...

Ms. See does it again! This is a story in which you can find out about the effects of long-time water immersion on a human body, the largest mushrooms in the world, the result of the three gorges dam project, and the corruption of public officials. A page-turner for sure!!

Walking the Bible
I bought both the book and the video made for PBS. Bruce Feiler has made the first five books of the Bible come alive with his archelogical visits to every place referred to in those first 5 books. His companion, an authority on the digs and finds, gave credibility and deeper insight into important archelogical locations referred to in Biblical History. The trip inside Egypt was so ...

Whether you agree or not...the arguments and material presented is solid.
Some like to argue the sources for this book are older and not well known. Well compare this to Strobels, Case for Christ who's only written source is the New Testament. The arguements, claims, and opinions are made based on the best material available in the Jesus Mysteries. It seems they do take a harder line than necessary at times to prove that Jesus didn't exist. HOWEVER, this is ...

this book is a "scream!"
When this book first was published, the Hotel Technology department head inadvertently had the college library purchase this book for the department. When it arrived we laughed hysterically about it, and many times, I have laughed about it ever since. Two years ago, I ordered a copy for the library where I am currently a Children's Librarian. It did not even make it to the "stacks", someone ...

This is not a DaVinci clone.
This is not Da Vinci. It's not any less than Da Vinci either in it's plot and scope . I have become addicted to these historical/religious thrillers that have a central premise built around the Bible, Christ, the Holy Grail, Knights Templar, Virgin Mary, the possible bloodline of Jesus etc. In this particular novel, the central premise is that the Book of Revelation may be true and that the world ...

Engaging and Intriguing Account of Science and Scholarship
The Archimedes Codex is definitely deserving of 5 stars. If you like learning and discovering, this book is a top choice. The narrative details how a team of modern day scientists and classicists, funded by an anonymous and generous benefactor, uncover important intellectual history - a select group of proofs by antiquity's greatest mathematician, Archimedes of Syracuse. Having studied ...

I ordered this as a class set for my second graders to read. We did a book study (reading, grammar, spelling). This is a wonderfully written book. It was so descriptive that my students were able to do some awesome visualizations (illustrations of what was read) to put up in our classroom. We ended our study unit with a trip to see the movie. My students loved the book and felt very grown up ...

Rifts In Interpretation
Dissertations that devote themselves almost wholly and completely to discussing the Nag Hammadi and Gnostic Gospels, or the New Testament should probably be dismissed out of hand, as they are only marginally related to the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Dead Sea Scrolls have nothing in common with any Gospels or New Testament works, except that the DSS are antecedent to them. The Gospels were to the Dead ...

thru a distant lens
This well honed 8th edition is an entrancing and beautiful description of the mythology of ancient Greece and Rome. The emphasis is Greece, naturally, since the Romans based so much of their beliefs on the Greeks. No prior knowledge of the subject is assumed. But the book is not some simple entry level exposition, like some freshman texts. Instead, Morford goes into a fair amount of detail ...

A Ground Breaking Book
When David Macaulay published this book in 1974, he was following in the path of the great American illustrators Edwin Tunis and Eric Sloane. They produced many memorable history books for young adults in the years following the Second World War. Tunis and Sloane blended well written history with well done pen and pencil illustrations. "City" follows the standard convention of beginning with a ...
