Al-Kitaab Audio
If you are using Al-Kitaab and not also in an Arabic class, I'd say the audio on the go CD is a must. It's the dialogues and exercises from the DVD that comes with the book, but you can take it wherever you go on your MP3 player. Very helpful.

Al-Kitaab Part 1
This is a well designed textbook. Heavy on vocabulary, but presented in context. The DVD that accompanies it is very helpful for pronunciation and listening practice. Assumes a knowledge of Arabic script and the 150 vocabulary words presented in Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds, so if you haven't already gone through Alif Baa, I recommend starting there.

I love Alif Baa
My only gripe is that I bought the book in the store and had to buy the answer key online. The answer key should be included with the book in store as well or INCLUDED in the damn book.

This is THE BEST course out there
Wow. I am surprised at the negative reviews and comments about this course but somewhat not. For the person that said his looked like it was printed on a Commodore 64, don't exaggerate; it is **not** as bad as all that! This book was written and published in the U.S. by the respected and esteemed Georgetown University. If it was that bad, I am sure they wouldn't have wasted their time printing ...

Al-Kitaab Fii Ta Allum Al- Arabiyya/a Textbook for Arabic (Al-Kitaab Fii Ta Allum Al-Arabiyya)5 reviews

Georgetown University Press, 1997

Innovative Text
The Al-Kitaab books use a truly outstanding and innovative approach to the teaching of the Arabic Language. The grammatical explanations are clear and concise, texts used are varied in content and address relevant cultural and social issues in the Arab world, and the vocabulary used in the lessons is widely useful. I recommend this series very enthusiastically.

Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya: A Textbook for Beginning Arabic, Part One33 reviews

Absolutely Brilliant
The book will teach brillant Arabic as long as you are not foolish enough to attempt the study of this language on your own. You should have either a native Arabic speaker (or a professor with a strong Arabic background) teaching you. First off, this is because a language is a means of communication and as such must be taught via communication. Secondly, it will insure you practice Arabic in a ...

Alif Baa: Introduction to Arabic Letters and Sounds57 reviews

Very complete
I have been using this book in my college Arabic classes three years now. It is an excellent book and is very complete. The DVDs supplement the book nicely. It would be almost impossible not to be able to learn the Arabic alphabet and some basic vocabulary with this book. The problem I have with using it for my classes is that you have to complete 7 of the 10 chapters before knowing all the ...

Kinda Beat Up
The product got to me in excellent time and I was extremely happy about that. But some of the ends were bent and folded and I was disappointed as the book was suppose to be brand new. It looks like it was dropped or smashed a couple of times but sent anyway.

Now available in MP3 format, this "Audio On the Go CD" contains all of the audio featured in the second edition DVDs for "Alif Baa". Not helpful but...
...if you email the pubisher, you can get it for free. It's really only the monologues (off the cd's) and doesn't give 99% of the answers to the exercises in the book. Even with the lowest of expectations, you'll be disapointed. If you actually pay for it, you'll be angry too.

Al-Kitaab fii Ta`allum al-`Arabiyya: A Textbook for Arabic (Part Three)1 review
Kristen Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal, ...

Georgetown University Press, 2007

Not for self study
Perhaps if you are studying with a teacher this book would merit another star. However, it does not help much with learning vocabulary. I also agree with a previous reviewer that the Michigan text, although dated, offers clearer explanations of the grammar and with its accompanying tapes is much more helpful for self-study.

Hard, but rewarding
I can't really add too much to what the more articulate reviewers have already said. I'm really writing this to counter the negative reviews. I've been using this book for about a month, in a second-semester class (Alif-Baa was used in the first). It's true that it asks you to make leaps of faith, in that you're sometimes given only parts of a verb ('she lives', 'I study'), or apparently ...
