Shah Nameh (Shiavaksh episode) : English translation.
Dr. Dick Davis has once again provided us with an admirable translation of a section of the Shah Nameh in his latest publication: "The Legend of Seyavash". The Shah Nameh (literally meaning The Book of Kings) is the national epic of Persia/Iran and is an epic poem of roughly 50,000 lines, composed by one of Persia's greatest poet, Abulqasim Firdausi and completed in 1010 A.D. The "Shiavaksh ...

well written
I bought this for my son. Living in Sweden he knows a little about his country Iran. And since the place is by now a hostage of islamic fundamentalism,he mostly turns away from Iran. Reading Rostam was a turning point for him.

in fairness to the publisher
I recently saw this book as well as the second volume in the planned three-volume set in the gift shop at the Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C., in connection with an exhibit of art work from various Shahnameh manuscripts currently on display. In all fairness to the publisher, it should be pointed out that this is a gloriously illustrated art book, not simply a text. The full-color ...

Fabulous
I recently saw this book as well as the first volume in the planned three-volume set in the Bay Area in connection with an exhibit of art work from various Shahnameh manuscripts currently on display. In all fairness to the publisher and the author , it should be stated that this is a magnificently illustrated art book, not simply a text. The full-color enlargement pictures of miniature fragments ...

The story of Rostam and Esfandiyar is one of the most moving tragedies in Ferdowsi's epic Shahnameh. In this story, Esfandiyar, the designated heir to the throne of Iran, has just returned in triumph from his campaign against the shah of Turan. He has slain Arjasp, Iran's greatest enemy, captured his family and treasury, and liberated his own sisters from their captivity. He expects that his father, Goshtasp, will now abdicate the throne ...

Fairies, Demons and the Glory of Kings
Nobody has been very enthusiastic up till now, and so it must be up to me. I loved and adored this book. I was entranced from the very beginning. Who could resist a story that tells you, "He was like a tall cypress tree topped by the moon", or, "He gathered together fairies, leopards and lions"? The "Shahnameh" or "Book of Kings" is one of the world's great epic poems; but the episodic ...

Acessible, readable and wonderful
This marvelous translation of the Shahnameh has resulted in a book that is accessible and readable. Dick Davies has managed to translate key passages into rhyming poetry, but the majority is well-written prose. He has omitted some repetitious passages to keep the length reasonable (around 850 pages) and to avoid testing the endurance of the general reader. This intelligent translation has ...

Magnificent Conclusion to the Shahnameh Trilogy
This book is incredible: the stories are wonderful, the poetry is truely superb and beautifully represents the original, and the illustrations are out of this world. For the first time in the past 30 years I saw Persian miniatures I had never seen before. This is a wonderful translation of the last third of the Shahnameh--the least known stories and some of the most touching, specially the ...
