Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali

Islamic Texts Society, 1997

Masterpiece
Remarkable! This text has made its way to our hands in order to use the timeless widsom of this Grand Master. Easy to read, heavy to reflect upon, the sickness of the heart, concerning greed and envy, ect.. have all been carefully mastered into a text that is easy to grasp. Some may say he has gone off the far end, perhaps reaching deeply for ultimate abstainance from this life, perhaps, ...

Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali

Islamic Texts Society, 2005

'Work for your terrestrial life in proportion to your location in it, and work for your afterlife in proportion to your eternity in it.' This is part of the advice that the great theologian and mystic Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058-1111 AD) put down in his Letter to a Disciple . An old disciple of al-Ghazali had studied the Islamic sciences, including the many works of his master, for most of his life. Faced with the proximity of death, he turns ...

The eleventh chapter of The Revival of the Religious Sciences begins the section dealing with man and society. In this volume concentrating on the manners relating to eating, Ghazali first discusses what a person must uphold when eating by himself: that the food is lawful, that both the person and the surroundings should be clean, that one must be content with what is available, and how the person should conduct himself while eating and after ...

Faith in Divine Unity and Trust in Divine Providence: The Revival of the Religious Sciences Book XXXV (The ...1 review
Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali

Fons Vitae, 2001

A word on translation
Kitab al-Tawhid wa al-Tawakkul is a significant part of al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulum al-Din, so I purchased it the first time I saw its translation. Unfortunately, it is my humble opinion that the translation is a little disappointing in that it is hardly acceptable by scholarly standards, which does not allow the reader to enjoy what the author has to say about the subject matter of the book. In many ...

Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali

Fons Vitae, 2000

Epitome of sincerity
As someone who enjoys al-Ghazali's work (espeically the Kimyaet Saada- Alchemy of Happiness, entirely translated into English by Jay Crook), I felt necessary to read this autobiographical work to further understand this great scholar. This book was much more than I expected. Although short, it conveys the development of one of the most brilliant minds of human history. One is most struck with the ...

Winters Renders al-Ghazali Perfectly
I have read numerous translations of books from the Ihya and was absolutely amazed and pleased to come across TJ Winters English rendition of this classical work of Islamic philosophy. It is not easy endeavor to bring forth the essence of al-Ghazali's Arabic style into the European languages. But, this books has done it! Really protrays the message, tone, and intention of al-Ghazali for the ...

Inner Dimensions of Islamic Worship1 review
Abu Hamid Muhammad ibn Muhammad Al-Ghazali

Islamic Foundation, 1983

Every Muslim should read this book
This book is easy to read and very slim, so it does not take long for a person to read through it at least once. Most people, however, will want to take longer so they can reflect on what Al-Ghazali is saying. Basically, he breaks down the 5 pillars of Islam and focuses on each one and how to perfect one's worship in that pillar. My favorite was the one that he focuses the most on: Prayer. He ...
