Music in the City: A History of Austin Music Scene1 review
Alan Turley

Duckling Pub, 2000

Interesting and Fun
This is a great book. It has a lot of neat anecdotes from the author from his time as a musician in Austin. It really captures the feel of the city and gives a lot of good ideas for places to go to if you're visiting or just don't go see live music much. I highly recommend it!

Rising Stars: The 10 Best Young Players in Baseball (Library of American Lives and Times Set 3)1 review
Alan Schwarz

Rosen Publishing Group, 2002

good but geographically challenged
A Sports Illustrated for Kids book, this book is generally well-written and well-organized for baseball-loving kids. But the author needs to look at a map of California -- in the Jason Kendall chapter he incorrectly lists Torrance as near San Diego (it's in Los Angeles County), and in the Shawn Green chapter he incorrectly lists Santa Barbara as near Tustin (these cities are about 130 miles apart ...

Rising Stars is a very good book. It gives a lot of information about the people in the NFL like Randy Moss, Eddie George, and Kurt Warner. Peyton Manning is also in the book. If you are a big sports fan and like football you will enjoy learning about some of the best people in football. This book was interesting to me because I like playing football and football games. Enjoy this book and all ...

a must have book
If you are a baseball fan with any interest in statistics (and how can one be a baseball fan WITHOUT an interest in statistics), then this book is a must-have. Schwarz has written a fascinating book giving the history of baseball statistics, getting into the personalities, politics and trivia involved. A wonderful book!

How Bill James Changed Our View of the Game of Baseball7 reviews
Rob Neyer, Alan Schwarz

ACTA Sports, 2007

A Slim But Important Volume
My favorite Bill James insight has absolutely nothing to do with baseball. It was in the Abstract the year he bought a computer, and the insight was that computers are incredibly dumb. He would type things the way he always had, and then make one mistake and the computer would execute that mistake as perfectly as it had all his correct commands, and he wondered why the computer couldn't learn. ...

Once Upon a Game: Baseball's Greatest Memories
Alan Schwarz

Houghton Mifflin, 2007

In Once Upon a Game, Alan Schwarz, author of the critically acclaimed The Numbers Game, assembles a one-of-a-kind volume of first-person recollections about baseball from some of the game's all-time legends and its most famous fans. Ernie Banks recalls the moment he coined the phrase "Let's play two!"; Mike Piazza recounts his backyard batting lesson with Ted Williams; Cal Ripken Jr. tells of his first call-up to the major leagues; Roger Clemens ...
