Simply Marvelous
The author describes the history of German Jewry in such an eloquent, informed and story-telling way that is just fascinating. Easy to read too. Excellent buy.

The Israelis: Founders and Sons (Pelican)3 reviews
Amos Elon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1983

Unique and Absorbing, Transformative
Amongst the relatively vast literature about Zionism and the history of the State of Israel, this book remains (35 years past its first printing in 1971) a unique contribution. First of all, it almost goes without saying that books in this area are often highly politicized and biased. On the other hand, more "sober" accounts can tend to be hundreds of pages of arid, statistically-based analysis ...

Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil (Penguin Classics)5 reviews
Hannah Arendt

Penguin Classics, 2006

A Classic that Elaborates on the Genocide of Jews and Others
I am delighted to see this classic back in print. Jewish author Hannah Arendt has provided a wealth of timeless information that goes far beyond the trial of the German war criminal Adolf Eichmann. This review is based on the original (1964) edition. Arendt (p. 39) gives the readers a taste of the scale of the Kristallnacht (November 1938): 7,500 Jewish shop windows broken, all synagogues ...

The Pity of It All: A History of the Jews in Germany, 1743-193313 reviews
Amos Elon

Metropolitan Books, 2002

Great Book on German Jews
The book is very well written, and the author has a great talent for storytelling. It is almost like reading a novel, this is achieved without affecting the academic value of the work. The book is referred to as the history of Jews in Germany between 1743 and 1933, in reality it is the history of intellectual jews in those years. There is little mention of poor jews, and for the most ...

Herzl1 review
Amos Elon

Schocken, 1985

Herzl
Although this book is biographical based on documentation, it reads like a novel. I always thought the seeds for WW II were sown after WW I but you can find them in this book at the end of the 19th century. Herzl is a very interesting character and Amos Elon brings him to life.

Founder: A Man and His Time4 reviews
Amos Elon

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1997

Enlightening and vividly dimensional portrait!
Mr. Elon writes a rich, enlightening, and engrossing portrait of a pivotal figure in European history. The context of 17th-18th century Frankfurt and Europe adds dimension that has to be read. A wonderful read and a wonderful gift. Bravo!

Jerusalem1 review
Amos Elon

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, 1996

Neutral
I'm surprised that this book is considered out of print as I just bought it in a bookshop at Gatwick Airport on my way back from my first trip to Israel. I strongly recommend seeing Jerusalem before reading this, as then you will have a picture of the city in your mind before hearing the inside story on some of the landmarks. This book is better than a guide even though it does demand a little ...
