Not Everyday an Aurora Borealis For Your Birthday: A Love Poem3 reviews
Carl Sandburg

Alfred A. Knopf, 1998

Pure and amazing.
I'm an avid reader of all sorts of novels. I've read 'em with thousands of pages, but none of them have ever moved me as much as this little book did. Both the poem and the illustration have a magical, enchanting quality to them. Buy it for yourself or as a gift. It's well worth the money.

One Lighthouse, One Moon4 reviews

HarperTrophy, 2002

pure enchantment
This book should become a classic. The illustrations areincredible and echo Van Gogh. I bought it for a child who will be three in November and who is used to imagining what is brought forth by picture. Another child in our family always selected it as the book to be "read" first. As happens with children, they had internalized the book before I had. One day I said as a joke something like "blue ...

Princess Furball9 reviews
Charlotte Huck

HarperTrophy, 1994

Undiscovered treasure
I have been searching for this book for years! I read it one time when I was about 8 years old, and fell in love with the story. Many years later, after forgetting the title and author, I have finally found it! I have spent countless hours searching for this book on-line and in bookstores. Princess Furball is a wonderful, inspiring version of Cinderella. I love that she isn't a damsel in ...

A New Coat for Anna8 reviews
Harriet Ziefert, Anita Lobel

Topeka Bindery, 1999

A heart-warming story about the harsh realities of war
As the post-war child of a family that suffered through World War II in the Netherlands, I can say that "A New Coat for Anna" has the ring of authenticity. In many ways, it reminds me of first-hand stories I heard from my parents and older siblings about the hardships--and the creativity--of ordinary people during those very difficult years. This well-written story takes the reader through a year ...

Anita Lobel

HarperCollins Publishers, 1984

Potatoes Potatoes by Anita Lobel
I first read this book as a college student (studying Elem Education) and never forgot it. The plot is just marvelous and the book emphasizes the importance of family. As a middle-aged mother of two, I am now purchasing this out-of-print book for my family. This picture book is a MUST READ for children AND adults. You cannot go wrong with it!

Alison's Zinnia3 reviews
Anita Lobel

Demco Media, 1996

Flowers A to Z
Anita Lobel's Alison's Zinnia is a unique alphabet book using a circular tale to lead the reader from A to Z. Each page has one line which begins with a girl's name and a flower for that particular letter and ends with a girl's name for the next letter, "Heather hosed a Hyacinth for Irene". The split page illustrations show a large detailed painting of the flower on top and the story line ...

The Scottish tale the Black Bull of Norroway, is a wonderful tale the Cinderella fashion. A mother has three beautiful daughters, and each go out to find their fortune. Jan Brett Night Before Christmas
I LOVE Jan Brett's books! I buy them anytime I see them whether on sale, old ones on Amazon as remainders, or new.. They make great gifts. I have a backup of many to give to children, particularly my granddaughters. The illustrations in this one are so beautiful it is really a keepsake to save as well as enjoy. Give it as a gift and you will make some child very happy and a parent happy, too.

My Grandmother's Stories: A Collection of Jewish Folk Tales1 review
Adele Geras

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2003

Cooking Up Grandmother's Stories
Every story (each ties to a household object) includes many possibilities for cooking which delights ME (author of RECIPES FOR READING) and encourages young (and formerly young)readers to concoct recipes to amplify and fill out the stories. If every family had a collection of grandmotherly tales like this based on household things, there would be no hope for FootballOnTheTube as a holiday ...

No Pretty Pictures: A Child of War33 reviews
Anita Lobel

HarperTrophy, 2000

Wonderfully riveting Holocaust story. Life affirming!
This book is a tragic adventure. Anita Lobel recalls the arrival of the Nazis and the end of her childhood as she knew it. I was thankful this book was a fast read, the suspense of what would happen to Lobel and her brother was too much at times. The writing is beautiful and appropriate for young readers as well as adults. Beautiful photos.

The Wisest Man in the World1 review
Benjamin Elkin

Methuen young books, 1971

"The tiniest creatures are teachers of kings"
This book is a charming the wise King Solomon, and how the Queen of Sheba came to trick him to prove that he was not wise, and shame him before the whole world. King Solomon's kindness to a bee is what ultimately saves him from the Queen of Sheba's manipulations. I remember growing up with this story -- the story is charming, but the gorgeous illustrations by Anita Lobel are what have stuck ...

How the Rooster1 review
Arnold Lobel, Anita Lobel

Puffin, 1979

How the Rooster Saved the Day
So he can work in the dark a robber tries to keep a rooster from calling up the sun each morning. How the rooster tricks the robber makes a wonderful story to use for a preschool story hour. I can't believe that the publisher has allowed this wonderful title to go out of print. If you can find a copy, cherish it.

Nini Here and There7 reviews

Greenwillow, 2007

An adventure!
If you think cats don't know what is what, then you don't live with a cat. Nini knows her humans are going somewhere and she wants to go, not so much to go, as NOT to be left behind. She knows what goes--suitcase, a pile of shoes, a box of books, and a guitar--and perches on those one after the other as if to say: I want to go, too! No, not in the black thing (her travel bag). But in she goes! ...

Singing Bee!2 reviews
Jane Hart

HarperCollins, 1982

A must-have for a child's library
I have many books of children's music, but this is one of my favorites. The songs are well-chosen, music arrangements fairly simple but beautiful, the illustrations are lovely, and the notes at the bottom of the pages give great information on the history, hand/dance movements. I've used my copy to read as a bedtime story, taught children to read with it (the syllabicated lyrics help break down ...

Hello, Day!1 review

Greenwillow, 2008

A Perfect First Book
This will now be one of the books I send to all new babies/parents I know. It is a perfect first book, with a simple text. The rhythm flows as each page states an animal's name and the sound it makes. The story has a beginning, middle, and end, beginning with the sun rising and the rooster crowing, and ending with the moon rising and the owl hooting. The illustrations are painted beautifully ...

The Stable Rat and Other Christmas Poems4 reviews
Julia Cunningham

Greenwillow Books, 2001

A Luminous Book for Christmas Reading
In STABLE RAT, Julia Cunningham is at her poetic best. Here, her unique voice is evident, singing strong and clear. Cunningham has an astonishing ability to see the world from an animal's point of view. Even a lowly rat is elevated to beauty as he shares the holy stable on the night of Jesus' birth. "I am a shadow, gray, gray, gray--never lightened by scarlet or splotched gold or even a dot of ...

This Quiet Lady1 review
Charlotte Zolotow

Topeka Bindery, 2000

The Perfect Mother's Day Gift
"This Quiet Lady " would be my perfect Mother's Day Gift. The story is simple: a little girl is looking at photographs of her mother through the years. Her mothers as a baby, as a baby, young girl, bride, and then, finally, as a mother. `This quiet lady, lovely and large...is my mother...And here is where I begin." Each description of the mother is accompanied by beautiful illustrations ...
