Creating Character Emotions 20 reviews Ann Hood
Story Press, 1998
Specific and helpful Imagine my surprise when I recognized my own writing mistakes in the examples of bad writing. This immediately helped me take my writing to the next level. I have many cherished writing books, and this one holds up well in comparison. It is helpful because it's specific and focused. I couldn't wait to get to the computer and apply the things I learned in this book. I'm happy to add it to my ...

The Knitting Circle: A Novel 49 reviews Ann Hood
W. W. Norton, 2008
Not just for the knitting crowd My book club chose this novel to discuss and I was not sure how excited I was because of the cover. Now, I am so happy that we read this piece. The knitting circle is about a group of women take up this hobby when they have found themselves adrift in life. The story unfolds each person's personal stories. Knitting together helped them create something tangible while they reconnected with ...

Properties of Water 1 review Ann Hood
Bantam, 1996
Sparkling pool of rebirth The true beauty of life is the way if ebbs and flows like a river, a tiny pebble in its path can take the water on a new glorious course and where it goes no one knows. In her sixth novel Ann Hood displays her magic touch for creating people and places that haunt the reader for a long time. I have noticed the melancholic tone in her books, the sad pangs and situations where people are hurt ...

Comfort: A Journey Through Grief 19 reviews Ann Hood
W. W. Norton, 2008
Hug your children and don't let go... The author's five year old daughter Grace died suddenly. She writes about her life and her coping with her grief. While the subject matter may turn many away, this 186 page book, which can be read in one sitting, will move you and particularly so if you have children.
Many compare this book to Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking. From my point of view, this book is in a different ...

Something Blue 3 reviews Ann Hood
Fanfare, 1992
Blue can be beautiful too I have first discovered Ann Hood through her newest book; "The Knitting Circle" and immediately fell in love with her ease of creating a written world that beckoned me to come back to it. After having such a good experience with her work I decided to hunt down her older books to see her evolution as a writer and to read all that she has to offer. I must say that "Something Blue" was not a ...

Do Not Go Gentle: My Search for Miracles in a Cynical Time 7 reviews Ann Hood
Picador, 2001
emotional, difficult quest for faith This book is the memoir of an Italian-American woman's emotional, difficult quest for faith. Strong themes are family, the death of her father, the supernatural, the Old Country, and miracles. The story is engrossing and educational with some slight repetition, especially toward the end, that could have been done away with by a skilled editor. Recommended.

An Ornithologist's Guide to Life: Stories 1 review Ann Hood
W. W. Norton & Company, 2005
(3.5) Stunning moments of clarity Hood is a consummate writer whose words and images create believable scenes of humanity played out in a variety of relationships. From the strange attraction of opposites to the complicated elements of friendship, Hood speaks with elegant precision, her description of place almost tactile. The stories cover all generations and experiences, as the characters struggle with issues that require ...

How I Saved My Father's Life (and Ruined Everything Else) 6 reviews Ann Hood
Scholastic Press, 2008
Courtesy of Teens Read Too Twelve-year-old Madeline Vandermeer is on her way to becoming a bona fide saint. Oh, she's not religious or anything, and her family never goes to church, but she's already performed two miracles. The first was when she slid a glass of water across the kitchen table by only thinking about it. The second was when somebody called her name in the middle of the night, and she woke up with a terrible ...
