My Own Big Bed 6 reviews Anna Grossnickle Hines
Greenwillow, 1998
Makes the transition from crib to bed a piece of cake! We bought this book for our daughter about a month before we were going to move her from her crib to her new "big girl bed". We've heard horror stories from other parents who experienced many sleepless nights when they tried to put their child in a regular bed. After reading her this book for about a month, we finally put her new bed in her room and it was a success! She slept the whole night ...

George Goes on an Archeological Dig This past weekend we visited a bookstore and my son wanted not one, but SEVEN Curious George books to add to his collection (he already had several at home). Curious George's Dinosaur Discovery was one of the books we bought.
This 24-page book was written in 2006 by Catherine Hapka with illustrations by Anna Grossnickle Hines (done in the style of H.A. Rey). In this story, the Man With the ...

1, 2, Buckle My Shoe 1 review Anna Grossnickle Hines
Harcourt Children's Books, 2008
Wonderful patchwork of a counting book! This is a delightful counting book for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers. The author-illustrator is an accomplished quilter and has managed to fuse both her passion for quilting and writing into this book. Each page is a burst of bright colors with a quilt for the background, and a number on each quilt. It follows the rhyme of "One two buckle my shoe" and besides the number being represented, ...

Pieces: A Year in Poems & Quilts 6 reviews
HarperTrophy, 2003
We read this book every night -- and I don't mind a bit!! I have two children (5 & 7) and BOTH love this book! The quilts are simply beautiful and the poems short and fun (easy) to read. This is a great book to start children enjoying more "adult" sounding poetry and not nursery rhymes. We talk about what the poems mean and look at the patterns and colors of the quilts. My mother is a quilter and I sew as well, so we talk about how quilts are made and ...

Fantastic Shortly: This is one of my son's favourite books and has been since he was only one and a half years old. Fun, silly, and with a positive emphasis on the father/son relationship, this book really shines.

Curious George and the Firefighters (Curious George) 2 reviews Anna Grossnickle Hines, H.A. and Margret Rey
Houghton Mifflin, 2004
Classic George! I think we'll have to buy some more copies of this story, my son makes us read it at least 4 - 5 times a week to him. He loves firefighters (and George of course) so this is a perfect fit.
I've noticed some of the newer stories "inspired" by Margaret and H.A. Rey -- this is one of their originals / classics. Timeless and precious are words that come to mind when thinking about the actual ...

When the Goblins Came Knocking Anna Grossnickle Hines
Greenwillow Books, 1995
Not everyone loves Halloween. Masks and costumes can scare, rather than delight. In irresistible verse the author describes the small narrator's memories of the terrors of last year--and his happy anticipation of this year's holiday. Full color.

When We Married Gary 1 review Anna Grossnickle Hines
Greenwillow, 1996
A beautiful book... This is a beautiful, helpful book. I have a eight year old daughter who continues to deal with issues of adoption, divorce, remarriage, new siblings, etc. We found this book in the public library shortly before her Dad got re-married last year. At first she was reluctant to read it with me, since she has struggled with the issues that come with blended families (while simultaneously loving ...

Big Like Me 6 reviews
Greenwillow, 1989
Great to give BIG SIBLING at the birth of LITTLE SIBLING! My 19 month-old son was "reading" this book when we brought his new baby sister home from the hospital! He had memorized all the words because of the beautiful way Ms. Hines rhymed every line! The first thing we had to do was sit his little sister beside him on the couch so he could "read" it to her!! How excited he was to know he could teach her how "to fly, we'll touch the sky!" He ...

Which Hat Is That? A Flip-the-Flap Book 1 review Anna Grossnickle Hines
Harcourt Children's Books, 2002
Encourages Make-Believe In this toddler "guess-it" book, the child opens a flap to learn what type of headdress the author has described. "When I wear a tall white puffy hat, a spiffy hat, a spotless hat... I measure, stir, pour, and flip, flop, flip! Which hat is that?" This author-illustrator team laud not only hats but also the world of dress-up and make-believe.

Take Time to Smell the Roses Joe is the kid in the class that takes his time doing everything! His teacher is always sayiny, "Hurry up, Joe!" But the teacher and the other children in the class miss many of the exciting things around them that Joe notices as they take their walk outside. What Can You Do in the Wind? 1 review Anna Grossnickle Hines
Greenwillow Books, 1999
A sweet book This book, and the other three in the series, have sweet, soft drawings that fascinate babies and encourage older children to imitate the illustrated actions. The text is simple but expressive, and my daughter has enjoyed having the "What can you do in the...." series read to her since she was 4 months old. At 22 months, these beautiful books are still some of her favorites.
