Rereadings: Seventeen writers revisit books they love3 reviews

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2005

Facets of writers; reflections of books seen in different lights
This volume has so little in common with collected interpretations, scholarly or chatty, of single literary works or authors. Nor do the (mostly) books written about suffer the sameness and burden of being "most influential" for the writers. Editor Anne Fadiman brilliantly introduces the act of self-revelation accomplished by passing books through prisms of innocence and then of experience and ...

The Best American Essays 2003 (The Best American Series)3 reviews

Houghton Mifflin, 2003

24 servings of rich, satisfying brain food
Last year's Best American Essays collection was edited by renowned (now, deceased) biologist Steven Jay Gould. Anne Fadiman, the editor for this year's collection, is by profession an essay editor, and the positive results show in this collection. Fadiman has chosen 24 essays whose common attribute is, as she states, that they are "crammed...the essays in this book... have no extra air. ...

Ex Libris: Confessions of a Common Reader88 reviews
Anne Fadiman

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2000

Celebrating bibliophilia
Within the pages of this slender little volume are the signs of a special community that will be familiar to all book obsessives. There is indeed more than one way to love a book. Are you a courtly lover: one who sees the physical book as sacrosanct; or a carnal lover who sees the book as a vessel for the words and ideas? Or are you, like me, sometimes one and then the other? For ...

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down206 reviews
Anne Fadiman

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1998

great book
This was an outstanding book. You may need to be a social anthropologist at heart to really love it, but the book was so enlightening on so many different levels. The background and customs of the Hmong are fascinating, and their clash with western culture is eye opening. I learned so much, not just about the Hmong, but about my own beliefs.

At Large and At Small: Familiar Essays7 reviews
Anne Fadiman

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2008

this book will make you smarter
Really, it will. In this collection of essays (available separately in other venues, but nestled together with great mutual congeniality in this book), Fadiman begins with her own confessed interests and obsessions--Charles Lamb and Coleridge, ice cream and coffee, arctic exploration and mail delivery, mounting butterflies and flying the flag--and traces a patient, curious path through all sorts ...
