A 21st Century Ethical Toolbox4 reviews
Anthony Weston

Oxford University Press, USA, 2007

Superb introduction to ethical reasoning
Most introductory ethics textbooks focus on the usual suspects: relativism, egoism, and the major competing ethical theories. In most, a discussion of ethical reasoning is limited to the first chapter of the book. In this expanded version of his previously published *A Practical Companion to Ethics*, Weston provides us with an introduction to ethics that places ethical *reasoning* at the ...

A Practical Companion to Ethics3 reviews
Anthony Weston

Oxford University Press, USA, 2005

A Great Companion
I used this book as a basic introduction to Ethics with an introductory class. The easy to read and concise nature of the author was very helpful. The book wouldn't stand alone, but very useful as a supplementary text. Good sections in back for students and teachers. The section on Values Conflict is also good. I definitely would use this book again.

Florida enchantments,1 review
Anthony Weston Dimock

Outing Pub. Co, 1908

Fascinating recounting of adventures in old Florida
Fascinating recounting of Dimock's nature adventures in Florida in the early 1900s. A.W. Dimock was a prominent New York financier who was three times a millionaire and three times wrecked on Wall Street in the 1800s - 1900s. That tells you right there he was a different sort of bird, which makes for interesting perspectives. He was also an adventurer, and one of his expeditions took him to ...

How to Re-imagine the World: A Pocket Guide for Practical Visionaries2 reviews
Anthony Weston

New Society Publishers, 2007

Doing it!
I have enjoyed this little book so much that I bought ten more of them to share with friends. I have already been playing with some of Weston's insights. When my town supervisor explained why the town would not be able to consider a proposal for low-income housing for seniors I remembered Weston's observations about windmills, and challenged right back: OK you've explained the conditions under ...

A Rulebook for Arguments39 reviews
Anthony Weston

Hackett Pub Co, 2008

Makes a terrible doorstop, so you may as well read it...
Everyone needs critical thinking. But who wants to learn it? Most books drone on and on about this or that rule with esoteric Latin terms seeping from every page. In such cases, critical thinking would suggest astute readers close the book and convert it to a doorstop. Thankfully, there's "A Rulebook for Arguments." This minuscule, concise, but nonetheless conceptually beefy book will cause ...

Back To Earth Pb1 review
Anthony Weston

Temple University Press, 1994

Wonderful for the Classroom
I've used this text in the classroom four times in the last six years or so. In every case, students have praised the Weston for both his accessibility and his radical critique of how our cultural practices in regard to the environment actually alienate us from a more than human world.

Toward Better Problems Pb (Ethics And Action)
Anthony Weston

Temple University Press, 1992

In "Toward Better Problems", Anthony Weston develops a pragmatic approach to the pressing moral issues of our time. Weston seeks to address practical problems in the spirit of John Dewey: that is, by focusing on specific human concerns and multiple, overlapping values rather than on abstract philosophical principles. Weston showcases his method in sustained discussion of four highly controversial areas: abortion, animal rights, environmentalism, ...

An Invitation to Environmental Philosophy

Oxford University Press, USA, 1998

Brief, inviting, and provocative, this book is a perfect introduction to the burgeoning field of environmental ethics. It animates the basic questions, tells compelling stories, and offers a range of philosophical responses as complementary--not antagonistic--exploratory strategies vital to this growing topic. The book is built around five individually authored chapters, each a representative contribution by a major author in the field. Each ...
