Ant, Ant, Ant! An Insect Chant3 reviews
April Pulley Sayre

NorthWord Books For Young Readers, 2005

A zany set of bug drawings and facts
Ant, Ant, Ant! (An Insect Chant) receives Trip Park's fun drawings as it follows up on the popular Trout, Trout, Trout! (A Fish Chant) to provide a zany set of bug drawings and facts. Yes, insect facts are included within the zany set of insect identification - and Trip Park's large-size and unique color drawings are quite vivid, adding to the excitement of a top pick.

Millbrook Press, 2001

Captures the magic of the hummingbird
April Pulley Sayre's The Hungry Hummingbird is a factual account which reads like fiction, providing the story of a hungry, confused young hummingbird and her search for the right flow to eat from. Beautiful drawings by Gay Holland capture the magic of the hummingbird.

Hush, Little Puppy1 review
April Pulley Sayre

Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 2007

It Rhymes!
My 2 yr old daughter loves this book about a puppy. It has beautiful pictures, and the whole story rhymes. Perfect for toddlers! Here is the first half of the book-"Hush little puppy, don't you bark, it's time to sleep, it's growing dark. Curl up small, warm, and glad. Think of all the fun we had. Remember splashing thru the creek? Your sloppy smooches on my cheek? You fetched every stick ...

Dig, Wait, Listen: A Desert Toad's Tale2 reviews
April Pulley Sayre

Greenwillow, 2001

My son says, "Give it a 'ten'!"
My son used this book as a reference for a science project that involved raising spadefoot toad tadpoles. This is a picture book with a very simple story, but the excellent illustrations depict the toad's lifecycle and unique habitat. We have enjoyed watching the spadefoot toads for years. They appear in droves after big summer storms, lay their eggs, and disappear almost immediately.

Math should always be this much fun!
Creatures with varying amount of feet lend themselves to be part of a mathematical beach party. Youngsters are drawn into this story by bright, colorful humorous but simple illustrations. One Is a Snail, Ten Is a Crab1 review
April Pulley Sayre, Jeff Sayre

Walker Books Ltd, 2004

great math content - easy to read
My daughter (age 4) loves this book and could "read" it after only a few times. As a math teacher, I love that it has multiple representations of numbers, and introduces the concept of multiplication. The pictures are great and the concept of this book is truly novel. A must read.

Bird, Bird, Bird!: A Chirping Chant1 review
April Pulley Sayre

NorthWord Books for Young Readers, 2007

We love this book!
We love all the chants and this is no exception. While the illustrator does a really good job we were sad to see that Trip Park who illustrated the other chants did not illustrate this. Bird Bird Bird is a fun way for children to learn more about birds!

April Pulley Sayre

Surprisingly lovely, and informative
I enjoyed this lovely book very much, and think that young children will be astonished to learn about what dust is and where it comes from. Adults too!

The Bumblebee Queen3 reviews
April Pulley Sayre

Charlesbridge Publishing, 2005

Not just for grade school kids....
This book has very useful information and beautiful illustrations for anyone interested in the life cycle of a bumblebee. Its informative for the novice beekeeper because its explained in very simple 'non-scientific' terms that anyone can understand. A great starter book before you research the more biological text-book type of information on bumblebees and pollination.

Hooray for Antarctica (Our Amazing Continents)1 review
April Pulley Sayre

Turtleback Books Distributed by Demco Media, 2003

Excellent photos, concise text
This book is available as paperback, and I like that in a book! The photos are engaging and large, can do a walkthrough (talk about the photos) with toddler to 1st grade, but the text is more for ... grade 2 and up? I bought the whole series (all the continents) and I like them all - mostly for the photos and limited text. They'll be part of my 3 - 1/2 year-old's library for some time.

Vulture View2 reviews
April Pulley Sayre

Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 2007

Awesome illustrations
Vulture View has wonderful illustrations showing the life of a vulture - and and what they eat - eww! There are books about many birds, but not many about this beautiful flyer. And, there are not too many books that help me teach about the letter "V" to my kindergartners.

Trout Are Made of Trees1 review
April Pulley Sayre

Charlesbridge Publishing, 2008

"Trout Are Made Of Trees"
This book is a lovely combination of brief informative text and colorful illustrations. The author uses simple declarative sentences to describe the natural process of decomposition of a leaf that falls into the river, is broken down by bacteria, and its passage from one form of life to the next until it ends up nourishing a trout. The provocative opening line reads, "Trout are made of trees." ...

Rosalind Franklin And DNA16 reviews
April Pulley Sayre

Topeka Bindery, 2000

The Forgotten Heroine of the Double Helix
+++++ I read Dr. James Watson's "The Double Helix"(1968) years ago. In it, he badly caricatured Dr. Rosalind Franklin (1920-1958) by systematically stereotyping her. (However, in his book's epilogue he does admit that his initial impressions of her were often wrong.) I forgot about this until I read the late Dr. Linus Pauling's "How to Live Longer and Feel Better" (1986). In the 'About ...

Crocodile Listens1 review
April Pulley Sayre

Greenwillow, 2001

Good read-aloud book
With the repetition of sounds -- the thump, thump, thump of galloping giraffes; the tromp, tromp, tromp of trotting warthogs; the croak, croak, croak of calling frogs; and the adorable beeeeyo, beeeeyo, beeeeyo calls of the baby crocodiles -- this book begs to be read aloud. For a good storyteller, there is a lot to work with. It's truly fun to read with the frequent animal noises happening on ...

Shadows1 review
April Pulley Sayre

Henry Holt and Co. (BYR), 2002

Shadows by April Pulley Sayre
I've used April Pulley Sayre's Shadows in my first grade classroom, both as a read aloud and for independent reading. It offers a nice alternative to straight scientific books on shadows. My students love the playful language, the new surprise on each page, and the engaging illustrations. The author points out things about shadows that we take for granted. For example: "A man keeps a shadow ...
