Quite helpful for World Leaders
One is continually astounded by the prescience of thought displayed by the ancient Greek philosophers, and Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics is indeed an exemplary representative of the field. As president of the world's only superpower, one must continually balance many important concerns -- not the least of which is ensuring that one operates from the highest of ethical principles, and ...

Ancient Philosophy at its Best
Aristotle's Physics is a brilliant compilation of his notes that he lectured from. This translation is stunning, with lots of commentaries and clarifications. This book encompasses everything from space, biology, potentiality, being, and luck, and much more. Whether reading for knowledge or pleasure, I would recommend this book.

complete
If you are interested in Aristotle's POETICS, this is the edition to own. You get a nice introduction, the full text of the poetics in Greek and English, and then a ton of commentary (300 pages), all of which is well organized for easy and selective digestion. A superb edition.
On Rhetoric: A Theory of Civic Discourse

The most scholarly & readable translation of the "Rhetorica"
Aristotle's treatise "On Rhetoric" has been the seminal work in the field since it was written. There is a very real sense in which there is nothing new under the sun since Aristotle's day, and that the rhetorical constructs of Burke, Toulmin and every other rhetorical theorist are simply Aristotle's concepts dressed up in new terms. Certainly no one has been as comprehensive in cataloguing all ...

EXCELLENT TRANSLATION - EXCELLENT STUDY GUIDE
I certainly refuse to be presumptuous enough to write a critique addressing the works of Aristotle, but do give this particular translation and particular publication five stars. It is an excellent study guide. It is quite superior to the Classics Club Edition. Recommend it highly. The cross references to the orginal greek are wonderful and quite useful. You need to add this one to your ...

Tragedy Teaches Us Something About Life
I read these works for a graduate seminar on Aristotle. Poetry appeals to human passions and emotions. Powerful beautiful language and metaphor really appeal to emotion. This idea really disturbed Plato, who takes on Homer in the Republic. Plato thought that early Greek poetry portrays a dark world; humans are checked by negative limits like death. Tragedy has in it a character of high ...

The Being-At-Work-Staying-Itself of Aristotle
Although the Sachs' translation and phrasing is difficult to ingest upon first glance, it is the only way to go in order to truly understand the meaning in Aristotle's work without reading the original Greek text. He captures Aristotle's subtilties in wording amazingly, while also preserving the literality and spirit of the Greek in a way that no other translator before has. The Greek ...

Best available English translation
I admit that I have not personally seen this book yet, but I posted a query about translations of the Ethics on the Philosop internet list, and the majority of respondents (university professors) favored Sarah Broadie and Christopher Rowe's translation, which includes an extensive and useful commentary, over all others.

Aristotle's Psychology in a Broader Context
Aristotle's short but profoundly influential work, De Anima, is set within a rich supporting text authored by Hugh Lawson-Tancred, the Penquin edition's translator and editor, that absorbs almost three-fourths of this volume. Besides his lengthy introduction, the editor provides a useful glossary of translations, summaries before each chapter, copious endnotes, and a short bibliography, but ...

Useful for the specialist and the student
Like most volumes in the Loeb series, the emphasis is not on word-for-word precision in the translation, but on acheiving greater readability in broader terms. Since the original text in ancient Greek is provided on the facing page, the editors assume that anyone with a little knowledge of Greek can supplement the looseness of the translation by referring to the original. And in general, the ...

We Reach Our Complete Perfection Through Habit
I read this book for a graduate seminar on Aristotle. I think Aristotle's ethics is his most seminal work in philosophy. In the early 1960's virtue ethics came to fore. It is a retrieval of Aristotle. It has very close parallels to the ancient Chinese philosophy of Confucius and the modern philosophy espoused in the 1970's called Communitarianism. For Aristotle Nicomachean Ethics, (EN) is ...

If You Don't Want To Live In A State, You Are Either A God Or A Beast
I read this book for a graduate seminar on Aristotle. Politics is one of Aristotle's most prescient works that had a profound impact on our Founding fathers. Nicomachean Ethics (EN) is part of political knowledge. Politics regulates when virtue does not. Laws are created for people who are not virtuous. Polis= "city or state." Humans live in society, so virtue ethics is not just for ...

The translation counts
Most people believe that if they read some ancient author, it is only the work that counts and the translation doesn't matter. Well, things aren't that simple, especially when it comes to Philosophy works. So, if you wanna read Aristotle's Metaphysics, keep in mind that if you don't understand some of the philosopher's ideas, the fault could be the translator's (it happenned to me). And to avoid ...

Readable Aristotle is not an oxymoron.
I found this translation easier to read than other translations of Aristotle. It is much easier to unpack and follow, only the content needs to be wrestled with, which is a project in and of itself. It includes the Becker numbers, which makes it easier to have a discussion with a group.

What is The Meaning Of Being?
I read this book for a graduate seminar on Aristotle. Topic of Metaphysics is Ousia=substance and being. What is the meaning of being? With respect to matter and form, it is primarily about form. Analytically both can be separate and distinct, but not in reality. One can analyze matter by potentiality and actuality. Matter can't answer the question of being without form. Some natural ...

Outstanding Translation and Reconstruction
This text is the first book of literary criticism in the western literary tradition--and the most influential. It is also a how-to-write-a-successful-story text, based on Aristotle's inductive study of Greek literature. Richard Janko's rendering is the best English translation I have read. His commentary on catharsis is profound, resolving what has often been a stumbling block for many critics ...

Excellent !
There are many reasons why this little book is worth more than its weight in gold. The editor has done the most admirable job in selecting the best translations and in including appropriate excerpts from Aristotle's voluminous work. The brief editorial introductions to each of the great philosopher's "books" are gems of historical and interpretive insight and in themselves well worth the ...

A Classic!
A classic in ancient Greek thought. Aristotle introduced the qualification of 'necessary' and 'possible' premises. And his book on Rhetoric deals on this teaching as well as many others. Shows where he differs from classic Platonian thought and where he agrees. An important work, as all of his works most undoubtedly are as they influenced the Western world for over a thousand years.

The Best Ever
I'm a student of philosophy, brought up in a philosophical family. Currently I am studying The Physics and am finding that in every way this is a superior translation compared to every other. It is very faithful to Aristotle's ideas, and captures his meanings as well as, if not better than, any other possible translation. My father, who is also a professor of Philosophy, also strongly supports ...
