Very good Newman Summary
This book did exactly what Cardinal Dulles said it would, give a concise overview of Newman's theology as well as give adequate background on Newman's life and what significance his writings have for contemporary theology. I found this book to be a fine introduction to Newman's thought; readable for a beginner and yet thorough enough to be kept as an on-hand reference.

A Master Teacher!
Avery Dulles takes the untrained reader on a journey through the complex thought processes of a religious scholar, in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step manner. He sets up criteria and begins building five philosophies or models of revelation theology that are most commonly embraced by Christians today. These models serve as a great eye-opening tool in the final compare-and-contrast stage of his ...

A Jesuit Scholar Anticipates the Jesus Seminar
Decades before John Dominic Crossan's "The Historical Jesus" hit the New York Times best-seller list, Avery Dulles -- now Avery Cardinal Dulles -- developed a humble, cogent, and reasonable defense of the Jesus that Christians have come to know and love by way of the New Testament. Don't look to this book if you want a scholarly treatment of the historical atmosphere of the first-century, ...

Catholics and Evangelization, Past, Present, and Future
This work is an updated version of papers presented at a 1994 "new evangelization" conference that grew out of an article by Fr. Avery Dulles (now a cardinal). Dulles, who was the keynote speaker, and other presenters addressed efforts of Vatican II participants and Popes Paul VI and John Paul II to clarify the call for Christian evangelization. The 23 articles are grouped under six headings: ...

A Clear Picture of the Priesthood
In this collection of five lectures Cardinal Dulles draws from Church teaching and a diverse group of theologians to flesh out the understanding of the priesthood. His main focus is to present a concept of ministerial priesthood which is, "coherent with he biblical data, with the catholic tradition, and with the teaching of Vatican II." Through developing these themes what emerges is an ...

Outstanding Analysis of the History of Christian Apologetics
What can present day Christian apologists learn from the apologetic masters of the past? The answer is undoubtedly quite a lot, but unfortunately works that carefully catalogue the history of Christian apologetics are quite rare. This rarity is likely due to the fact that the author of such a work must possess substantial scholarly competence in several academic fields, including theology, ...

Although written by and for Roman Catholics, every Protestant theologian and pastor will also be ...

A Needed Book from an Excellent Theologian
Avery Cardinal Dulles is an excellent theologian and Catholic convert who has written a book reiterating official Church teaching. Such a book is much needed given that not a few so-called "Catholic" theologians in fact do not embrace all of the teachings of the Church. Cardinal Dulles is a theologian's theologian whose caliber of work is above that of most in the profession. And, most ...

"It is an oversimplification to say that dogmas are irreformable"
I have thoroughly enjoyed and greatly profited from my two close readings of Cardinal Dulles's THE SURVIVAL OF DOGMA (1971, 1982). And I have never taken a theology course in my life. I suspect that a professional theologian of the year 2008 might, however, find this book easy reading and long since overtaken by events and ever newer and more daring speculations and suggestions. But for me ...

Henri de Lubac is a dominating figure in the renewal of catholic theology in the twentieth century, opposing neo-Thomist orthodoxy with a pluriform and historical notion of tradition based on the creative reappropriation of patristic sources. De Lubac's adult life encompasses the whole of what Eric Hobsbawm has called the `short' twentieth century, extending from the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, in which he fought, to the collapse ...
