Refreshing, unjaded views of life
This anthology of short essays and poems is refreshing in its uninhibited look into the hearts of a diverse group of women writers. From the young to the young-only-in-spirit, this group provides a surprisingly fresh, intimate glimpse into the past and present lives of these Washington women. In particular, Julia Weller's ability to engross the reader so quickly makes one hope that she soon ...

This is an highly memorable, enjoyable book for all ages.
I read the original edition of this book nearly 30 years ago, and keep buying it for friends, and my own daughter - it is a sensitive, whimsical and accessibly deep look at Islam, the nature of life, the Turkish culture, and simple, transcendent morals. The humor, and the points of the fables are all gently made, with a great deal of charm and simple eloquence. One of my favorite books of ...

Thanks to Barbara G Walker, I can knit!
Although I learned the basics many years ago, I have always been a very mediocre knitter. I have never attempted lace, cables, or multi color patterns, and aside from a few children's sweaters and simple socks, I have never completed a major handknitting project. This book has been sitting on my bookshelf for several years now, but I never seemed to have the time or nerve to begin. ...

The Craft of Lace Knitting by Barbara G. Walker
I do not own this book, but I did check it out of the library. This book has many interesting and exciting lace patterns. I am really thrilled to see all of the intricate stitches and can hardly wait to begin. It is definitely worth checking out if you LOVE knitting lace. Things to think about before purchasing this book: 1. These lace stitch patterns were originally published as ...

A Knitter's Review of The Craft of Multicolor Knitting
Barbara Walker's books are the best reference books a knitter can have. They are all packed full of good information that is easy to understand. I use them for reference, inspiration, and to help me translate something that I don't understand in knittintg pattern directions. I like this book very much. There are tips to teach you to change colors without making a jog in your knitting, ideas about ...

Practical learning
For many years I tried unsuccessfully to learn to knit. Then I found Ms. Walker's Learn to Knit Afghan Book in a craft book club. The method she teaches holds the yarn the European way, which keeps the learner from having to throw the yarn with the right hand, risking dropped stitches. The format of the book gives large pictures of each pattern with explicit and well-defined instructions. ...

An excellent resource for comparative studies of folk tales in middle school
"Once there was and twice there wasn't" begins each of these seven Turkish folk tales. Therefore, it is reasonable to believe that it is the equivalent of the English, "Once upon a time." These stories all feature Keloglan (Kell-oh-lahn) which means "bald boy." The stories of Keloglan are very similar to the Arabian Nights fairy tales, as there are genies, magic animals, fair princesses whose ...

packed with info!
First of all, to the reader from...where was that again???oh yeah, Bogart Georgia, there obviously just weren't enough pictures to satisfy a scholar such as yourself... I, on the other hand, am no 'scholar', but I have read the book as well as most of her other titles, and I've enjoyed it immensely. It's packed with information pertaining to history and symbolism with a feminist focus, and all I ...

The black and white pictures are a plus
There is an online archive that is creating color swatches of patterns from these books, which is fine. But today I was able to compare this book with the new Harmony Stitch Guide: Lace and Eyelets, and this one is far superior. The swatches actually show the pattern very clearly in the somewhat more distant view, while modern guides such as Harmony give extreme close-ups that give you no idea ...

Excellent!
This book is an excellent source of beautiful knitting patterns, including lace, cable and patterns. The black and white photo's of the stitches are so sharp and detailed, the designs pop off the page. The best part, for me, the charts are very large and so easy to see (without my glasses on!)and very easy to understand what she is telling you to do. She also gives some instructional information ...

It cleared my channels
I read this book into the wee hours of the morning because it was connecting the dots in so many ways. All the mythological names I had studied in high school and at the university were re-visited in her text and explained. She makes a very convincing case for how many female goddesses and especially, the trinities, were co-opted by the Christian theology. She takes a stab at Buddhism as well ...

A classic that deserves the title
I originally didn't want to buy this book. It was recommended to me, but I found it at the library first, thinking that I have about 7 quadrillion knitting books already, I don't need another one, especially not one with such a dated-looking sweater on the cover. Was I ever wrong! I found the book at the library, and after reading it for about an hour, went onto Amazon and ordered it because I ...

Self Reflection
I have had this deck for many years now and have not found any better cards to date. They just tell it how it is, simply, without fuss, and without blame. If you don't want to see your reflection, then don't look in the mirror! They articulate human nature exquisitely. Mine come everywhere with me. I used them professionally for a few years very sucessfully. I wouldn't be without them. They are ...

A valuable reference
Barbara's obsession with interesting knitting and the how-to of creating imaginative patterns caused her to coin the term mosaic knitting and invent the patterns in this book. It's easy to read, easy to learn from her direction and it's good fun to knit dramatic designs. So far I find no mistakes in the patterns. She is technically a genius!
