Life: The Science of Biology Study Guide30 reviews
Edward Dzialowski, Betty McGuire, ...

W. H. Freeman, 2003

impressive and thorough
An undergraduate, freshman level biology class I took used this as its textbook. It is thorough and detailed, packed with information on a broad range of biological topics, written in a highly accessible manner that requires no special training to understand. It covers such topics as the cell, heredity, evolution, plants, animals, and ecology. It's not quite as well written as the finest ...

Memoirs of My Life (Penguin Classics)2 reviews
Edward Gibbon

Penguin Classics, 1984

I concur with the review of "a reader"
The review, "Gibbon's fragments fashioned into a fascinating whole", written on May 18, 1998, was the basis upon which I purchased this book, and experience proved it entirely accurate and deserving of the many Helpful votes. In my review of Betty Radice's edition of Gibbon's Memoirs, I will begin with the negatives, which as you might guess from my five star rating, are minor and failed to ...

Drawing on the right side of the brain45 reviews
Betty Edwards

Tarcher, 1989

It Works! (and it's fun)
It works! I've picked up a few drawing books and always found myself losing interest after an exercise or two. With this book, I not only made satisfying drawings from the beginning, but found that I couldn't wait to get to the next exercise. Some of my portraits (but not all) were faithful to the subject in spirit as well as mere appearance. There are some objections to be made. The ...

I like this book
We need another book like this. Most design books lack "it".

Betty Crocker's Cooky Book1 review
Betty Crocker

Golden Press, 1963

Holiday Baking
Betty Crocker's Cooky Book is a rediscovery from childhood for many and an entire world of delicious cookie treasures for anyone who loves baking, especially in the holiday season. Each year at Christmas my grandmother would take out about 20 (it seemed) cookie tins and bake until each and every one of those tins were filled with cookies during the winter months and especially near Christmas. ...

New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workbook: Guided Practice in the Five Basic Skills of Drawing36 reviews
Betty Edwards

Tarcher, 2002

Cracking the wall
I have a family that is full of artists, and always felt really sad that I couldn't draw even a stick figure! A little while ago I realised something important - that drawing is a form of literacy, like writing, and so many of us don't make it past kindergarten. Visual communication is really under-rated in our school systems, which pretty much relegates most of us to the category of ...

What an excellent e-book!
A wonderful work of history and a wonderful e-book conversion! This is very well formatted and has true "live" Reader footnotes...hundreds! I can't imagine the work that PocketPCpress put in to make this. It shows. I hope they do the remaining volumes in the series. I'll buy them all!

The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain167 reviews
Betty Edwards

Tarcher, 1999

I had it for a while...
... honestly I did not read it yet, but I did take art classes that were derived from the book, and I was amazed at how some of the techniques (though unorthodox) come out to be pretty good exercises as well as drawings. I just never had the time to continue with them on my own. Not very helpful of a review, is it? well these are my few words, the rest is up to you.

Drawing On the Right Side Of the Brain4 reviews
Betty Edwards

Tarcher, 1979

Congratulations to Dr. Betty Edwards
Since the first time I read this book in 1983, I had the wish to express my gratitude to Dr. B. Edwards, because this book made great difference in my life. Through understanding better the process of realistic drawing I have improved my self in many ways. Learning to really see is a way to grow inside as a person, in all senses. That book has marked my passage from adolescence to adulthood (I ...

Drawing on the Artist Within: An Inspirational and Practical Guide to Increasing Your Creative Powers14 reviews
Betty Edwards

Fireside, 1987

It's worth buying for the part on analog drawing
This book is not a substitute for Betty Edwards' basic book on drawing, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. This book is about the creative process. So it applies to more than drawing or even visual art. For me, the part on analog drawing opened up a whole new way to develop my work. I've used it in dream interpretation and personal growth as well as for my artwork. As an ...

Men as Caregivers: Theory, Research, and Service Implications1 review

Springer Publishing Company, 2001

forgotten men in an important role
As this book notes, one-third of all caregivers are male, yet they are either ignored or assumed to be just like their female counterparts. This book peels the onion on the dynamics of men are caregivers. The first section details their existence in this important activity. The second describes how men differ from women while performing the role. The final section looks at special topics and ...
