Trio of Horror
There is an introduction written by Stephen King but it adds some to the stories themselves as it places them within historical context. But if you are a first time reader of these stories be warned there are no footnotes, endnotes, or explanations of unfamiliar terms - so you could find yourself at a bit of a loss. The book contains the third edition of "Frankenstein" originally published in ...

Bram Stoker's Dracula: A Parable For Our Times
Book Groups of America, put down your Oprah choices, your Eat, Pray, and Love drivel, your watered elephants, and read Bram Stoker's Dracula. I wanted to read some long books before my book-a-day project begins and Dracula was on the list of recommended must-reads. My son's English teacher was right, everyone should read this book. I finished Dracula last night after midnight. WIth a ...

Sucks to be Dracula
"Dracula" was not the first vampire novel, nor was it Bram Stoker's first book. But after years of research, Stoker managed to craft the ultimate vampire novel, which has spawned countless movies, spinoffs, and books that follow the blueprint of the Transylvanian count. Real estate agent Jonathan Harker arrives in Transylvania, to arrange a London house sale to Count Dracula. But as the days ...

Excellent book
A little lengthy for me, but it really is neccessary to create an amazing setting and character desrciption. Stoker truly creates a very rustic and creepy setting. The only problem I had with the book is the ending. It's not surprise what the ending is, but in comparison to Lucy's 'deal', the count's just doesn't live up to your own hype as you read. Excellent book though! Now I only wish ...

An old fashioned tale that doesn't offend
Bram Stoker's "Dracula" was first published in 1897, and as one reads this work, it is overwhelmingly apparent that it was written during a time when morals and virtues were held in a much higher regard than they are today. The book is comprised primarily of various journal entries from six main characters. Two of these main characters are remarkable women, possessed of lofty talent and high ...

When Jonathan Harker visits Transylvania to arrange for an English home purchase for Count Dracula, he becomes a prisoner in Dracula's castle and discovers horrific and unnatural facts about Dracula himself. Not long after, strange events occur in England--a unmanned ship beaches on shore, a madman awaits his master, and a young woman with unexplained puncture wounds on her neck becomes pale and ...

Amazing...
I am very interested in the history of sex. That is one course I'd like to teach after I get my PhD. This book just took me back a little further into sexual history. I was surprised at how old some sexual terms and parts of the body are. I was also surprised with certain actions the characters performed. Today, many of these sexual acts are fully accepted. However, I would have figured the ...

Must-read for Stoker fans
Dracula being one of my favorite books, I was thrilled to find this collection of Bram Stoker's short stories. I enjoy horror writers who can provoke old-fashioned fright without relying too heavily on graphic details; while those details have a place, too many of them dampen a story. I was hoping that this collection would be as skillfully crafted as Dracula; I'm happy to say that this ...

"For the dead travel fast"
Surprisingly "Denn die Toten reiten schnell" or "For the dead travel fast" is more than an opening line to this tale of love in the dangerous moon light. After watching several Drac movies and a few Nosferatu's, I pretty much though I had a handle on the genera. Little did I know what a wonderful world of mystery and suspense that Bram Stoker opened up for me. The story is told mostly third ...

The Great 19th Century Vampires & Their Antecedents.
"Three Vampire Tales" is a collection of 19th century vampire literature that follows the increasing popularity of vampires in English literature, from Lord Byron's 1812 poem, "The Giaour", to the culmination of that century's vampire tales in Bram Stoker's 1897 gothic horror novel "Dracula". The three featured stories are: John Polidori's "The Vampyre", the first vampire short story in English, ...

Dracula. The socalled masterpiece.
In a world of modern technology and advancements that could ask the questions of God and life there is Dracula. whos mere prescence declares that there are things which could not be explained by science. The book is well written and leaves the reader largely unaware of the terrors lurking in the night. I read this book to get a feel of the vampire roots. i was not let down. That was until the ...

Classic novel with excellent narration
One of the very best Gothic novels gets first-class treatment from narrator Robert Whitfield in this unabridged production. Just the right amount of melodrama; excellent accents. It's amazing how, after all these years and in this day of slasher flicks and such, Stoker's classic never fails to tingle the spine.

A worthy volume of illustrated adaptations
"Graphic Classics: Bram Stoker" serves up an excellent collection of illustrated stories by horror Grandmaster Bram Stoker. Each tale is either fully illustrated, comic book style, or text and page combined. All of the illustrations are in black and white, and feature a wide variety of styles and flair. This is definitely not the typical art you would find in a DC or Marvel comic, but is much ...
