Through the Shadowlands: The Love Story of C. S. Lewis and Joy Davidman3 reviews
Brian Sibley

Revell, 2005

a gift to the bereaved
I am buying this book again because I gave my last copy to a friend whose son had been killed. I found this book to be the most comforting book I read when my own son was killed. I almost find that strange beause reading lewis has never comforted me but reading ABOUT lewis and his crisis of faith during his loss helped me deal with my own grief.

The Lord of the Rings (Box Set) (J.R.R. Tolkien)139 reviews
J. R. R. Tolkien

Random House Audio, 1993

I never tire of this version
My old tapes are all worn out, and two were eaten by my old car stereo, so I was thrilled to finally get a clean copy of the great BBC dramatization. I have dreamed Middle Earth since I was a child, and had enough visuals in my head to last a lifetime. This old experience of the books has meant that I have overlapping interpretations of the characters in my head, those I built from the readings ...

The Maps of Tolkien's Middle-Earth12 reviews
Brian Sibley, J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2003

Good Deal
These are four maps drawn by John Howe, an artist well-known as a Tolkien illustrator. If you're not familiar with his work I suggest checking it out. The maps are of Beleriand, Numenor, Middle Earth, and of the lands journeyed through in The Hobbit. All of the maps have a thick border with symbols, captions, and illustrations and are real works of art. The maps are 28x28 and come folded up ...

The Discipleship Study Bible: New Revised Standard Version Including Apocrypha4 reviews

Westminster John Knox Press, 2008

FANTASTIC!!
I am glad to be the first reviewer of this study Bible. I have New Interpreters, HarperCollins, Oxford, Zondervan NIV, Spiritual Formation and other study Bibles; but this one is now my personal favorite. It lacks the academic technicality of New Interpreters and HarperCollins, which is a plus for nonscholars. There is no serious focus on documentary sources nor on historical criticism. ...

The Golden Compass: Official Illustrated Movie Companion (Golden Compass)2 reviews
Brian Sibley

Scholastic, 2007

Digging into "The Golden Compass"
I didn't read the books, but I really enjoyed the film "The Golden Compass", and this particular book simply adds to the pleasure. Its a relatively short book, but it is crammed with the kind of "making of" information and pictures that fill out the movie experience. I feel much more thought and effort went into the creation of the world of "The Golden Compass" than one found in "Narnia"...the ...

Creating 3-D Animation: The Aardman Book of Filmmaking16 reviews
Peter Lord, Brian Sibley

Harry N. Abrams, 2004

You've gotta get this!
This is a great book for anyone interested in 3D animation. There is alot about the history of animation with clay and puppets. Included is info on cameras, lighting, sets, and how to build characters in clay. Learn about movement of characters and see great pictures of Wallace and Gromit being built as well as other short films. Get "Chicken Run Hatching the Movie" book too. You'll love it.

The Lord of the Rings Official Movie Guide41 reviews
Brian Sibley, J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2001

A Great Buy
The first thing I would like to say is a slight warning. This book is focused on The Fellowship of the Ring and contains basically no information concerning the last two films. Do not be deceived by the title. If you are interested in the other films, there are visual guides for each seperate one, including The Fellowship... Other than that, this is an incredible book, with STUNNING pictures ...

Chicken Run: Hatching the Movie5 reviews
Brian Sibley

Harry N. Abrams, 2000

A Wonderfully Whimsical Book
Anyone who has the slightest interest in knowing how an animated movie is created will love "Chicken Run - Hatching the Movie." by Brian Sibley. Even the design of the book is whimsical in style and lush with color illustrations from the new movie as well as from other films from this animation house. A lighthearted introduction written by Mel Gibson (who is the voice for Rocky in the ...

Peter Jackson: A Film-Maker's Journey2 reviews
Brian Sibley

HarperCollins UK, 2006

Weighty and worthy
The book is on the shelves in New Zealand right now. It's a remarkable journey he has made, from struggling apprentice printer to mogul. The book, like his movies, is long, and rewarding for it. The emphasis is more on pre-LOTR work and life, and it really focuses on the movies - no business or personal exposes here. Three things struck me: The first is his overwhelming passion for ...

C. S. Lewis Through the Shadowlands: The Story of His Life With Joy Davidman2 reviews
Brian Sibley

Revell, 1999

The Myth that Really Happened
This is the most heartrendingly true, real, unfettered love story ever lived or written about. Brian Sibley has masterfully set the achingly beautiful love story between Jack Lewis and Joy Gresham within the masterfully researched and delightfully detailed context of the greater love story which God the Master storyteller was writing through their lives. This is the definitive work proving the ...

The Fellowship of the Ring Insiders' Guide (The Lord of the Rings Movie Tie-In)6 reviews
Brian Sibley, J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2001

A fantastic book for all!!
I've been trying to collect as many Lord of the Rings books as I can, and this one did not let me down. It was certainly an excellent addition to my collection! The 96-pages are packed with behind-the-scenes information on the Fellowship of the Rings, and with 95 photos which includes the hobbits, Aragorn, Legolas, Gandalf . . . etc., the bad guys, set locations, behind-the-scenes, and many ...

Empires of the Imagination: A Critical Survey of Fantasy Cinema from Georges Melies to the Lord of the Rings
Alec Worley

McFarland & Company, 2005

The warlocks and ghosts of fantasy film haunt our popular culture, but the genre has too long been ignored by critics. This comprehensive critical survey of fantasy cinema demonstrates that the fantasy genre amounts to more than escapism. Through a meticulously researched analysis of over a century of fantasy pictures—from the seminal work of Georges Méliès to Peter Jackson’s recent tours of Middle–earth—the work identifies narrative strategies ...

The C.S. Lewis Chronicles: The Indispensable Biography of the Creator of Narnia Full of Little-Known Facts, ...2 reviews
Colin Duriez

Bluebridge, 2005

Good, blog-style biography
The latest biography from C.S. Lewis scholar Colin Duriez impresses me as a blog-style work. It does not have a flowing narrative which attempts to tell the story of Lewis' life or, worse, attempts to reveal "the secret" of his success. It has the feel of third-person diary. Duriez offers many details from Lewis' life in the chronological order they occurred with few contextual notes from the ...

The Land of Narnia: Brian Sibley Explores the World of C. S. Lewis4 reviews
Brian Sibley

Harper & Row, 1990

A good book that explains the Narnia Series!
The Land of Narnia is a good book that tells about C.S. Lewis' life and how he came to write the Chronicles of Narnia. This book tells who Aslan and the Witches are and tells what gave C.S. Lewis the idea for Reepicheep, the warrior mouse. This book contains summaries for the seven books as well. This is an excellent book to read if you have just finished reading the Chronicles of Narnia. ...
