The C Programming Language1 review
Brian W. Kernighan, Dennis M. Ritchie

Prentice-Hall of india, 1988

"Hello, world"
Some people refer to this as the "c" bible This book is not cluttered with C++ forcing you to figure out what part is "c". You may think that this book is not for beginners. However it is actually more of a combination of dictionary and ["The Elements of Style" ISBN: 020530902X] for the "c" language This does of course include ANSI c, which is transportable to all platforms. It also ...

AMPL: A Modeling Language for Math Programming Package3 reviews
Robert Fourer, Brian W. Kernighan

Duxbury Pr, 1999

A Great Companion for Great Software
Most software "companions" (more than a manual...not quite a book) really do not do justice to the software. Quite the contrary for the AMPL guide. AMPL (the language) is a *very* powerful and *very* easy to use Optimization package. It interfaces with most of the major solvers. Users program in AMPL which is more or less pseudocode and then solve LP, nonlinear, combinatorial, integer, etc. ...

The C Programming Language253 reviews
Brian W. Kernighan, Dennis M. Ritchie

Prentice Hall, 1978

The Must-have
I've read the first edition, and this is a must. It doesn't cover some of the details of ISO/ansi 99, but those can be found elsewhere. What can't be found is the way the authors drag even the beginning student right into the depths of memory allocation so soon. This book isn't too easy, but it's one no student of c can be without, and it's well-written, into the bargain.

Software Tools5 reviews
Brian W. Kernighan, P. J. Plauger

Addison-Wesley Professional, 1976

The Most Important Software Book I Ever Read.
Software Tools. I can't say enough about how important this book was - and still is - to me. The Software Tools in Pascal version does not have the same effect - it doesn't really work. But Software Tools gets across the idea that you do not have to accept the constraints of your environment to produce excellent programs. Instead, develop the program the way is should be and make a ...

Software Tools in Pascal4 reviews
Brian W. Kernighan, P. J. Plauger

Addison-Wesley Pub (Sd), 1981

Must-have
This book was recommended to me by one of my computer science teachers back in 1985 and I still use it! I have tried and tested all the programs in the book myself and I am still using some of them today. I know these tools come standard with the Unix programming environment, but when I got the book I didn't have access to a Unix system. I needed these tools! (And occasionally I still need ...

The C Programming Language1 review
Dennis M. Ritchie Brian W Kernighan

Prentice Hall, 1978

Ancient History And Still A Good Primer
I bought this book back in the early 80's and it served to explain and promote the mysterious C programming language. At the time, most languages were all trying to be easy to read and this seemed to be an esoteric and intriguing approach. The style is deliberate and detailed yet it doesn't overwhelm. It begins to promote thinking both from the high level and at the bit level concurrently--a ...

Unix Programming Environment (Prentice-Hall Software Series)33 reviews
Brian W. Kernighan, Rob Pike

Prentice Hall, 1984

Great book on the foundations of the UNIX environment
In spite of its advanced age, this book is still relevant and explains many topics better than much newer books on the various flavors of UNIX. Although there are better books on the specific flavors of UNIX available today, no other book does as good a job of explaining the philosophy of generic UNIX and its intrinsic relationship to the C programming language. The book starts out talking about ...

The Elements of Programming Style12 reviews
Brian W. Kernighan, P. J. Plauger

Computing Mcgraw-Hill, 1978

Some good rules for us all, still valid after so many years
I think this little book is still relevant today, over thirty years after it first appeared. Yes, some people claim that computer programming is taught a little better today, and we all learn better habits. Actually, I'm not sure how true that is. People may be better at telling kids how to tidy up their rooms, but I've seen some rather messy rooms! And people may say that FORTRAN and ...

The AWK Programming Language18 reviews
Alfred V. Aho, Brian W. Kernighan, ...

Addison Wesley, 1988

Amazing little language and book that will grow with you
In Unix today, several scripting languages exist: awk, perl, tcl and python. Awk is a small, easy-to-learn, yet powerful programming language, and is language of choice for quick, think- and analyze-on-the-fly tasks. This book is written by the inventors of this wonderful language. It provides an excellent introduction to the language, with many practical examples for day-to-day use. Over many ...

This is the most important book I ever read!
This is the most important book I ever read! It shows us that the programming is so easy and simple as the most of the greatest things. Don't miss this book even you are programming in the present or the feature.

The C Programming Language1 review
Dennis M. Richie, Brian W. Kernighan

Prentice Hall, 1990

Good book, short but enough.
The writing style is good and you will enjoy with the reading. However, I think that if you want learn much more or how to use the language (not what) it is not the best option.
