Chile Peppers (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide) 1 review Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001
Okay, but not about growing peppers per se..... I bought this book used because I wanted to compare the BBG CHILE PEPPER book with other pepper books and the price was right. I have a confession. I never eat peppers. I can grow anything that smacks of capsicum, but I don't even like the smell of green peppers on pizza. Okay, I make chili and do it the right way with several tablespoons of ground chili pepper, and I eat plenty of Asian food ...

Easy Compost: The Secret to Great Soil and Spectacular Plants (Brooklyn Botanic Garden 21st-Century Gardening ... 1 review Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 1997
The Dirt on Dirt Easy Compost is a splendid introduction to the art of composting. Easy to read and loaded with useful photos, the book provides the reader with a sound understanding of the process and importance of composting, while not being overwhelming. In particular I found the chaapters on composting indoors and commercial composts quite useful. All in all, a good book.

Easy Lawns (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide) 3 reviews Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001
Unique resource If you are considering putting in a low maintenance lawn or meadow suited to your local climate, this is the book for you. I have not found anything to compare with the information packed in this slim volume. The authors examine the requirments of each geographic region and each type of grass available in detail, and even give a list of sources. With the information I gleaned here, I'm ready ...

The Natural Water Garden (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide) 4 reviews Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001
Realistic water gardening With the boom in water garden popularity has come the boom in water gardening books. Most of these books are expensive and disappointing, either being pretty picture books or complicated guides to dream water gardens. As usual, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden 21st Century Gardening Series has delivered the goods for under $10. The subtitle of this book, "Pools, Ponds, Marshes & Bogs for Backyards ...

Japanese-Inspired Gardens 1 review Patricia Jonas
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001
A very good introduction This brief book served as a great introduction to Japanese gardening philosophy and technique. I must admit that I approached the idea of a Japanese garden with some pretty stereotypical views of what to include and how to structure the space. This book shows how the philosophy is actually more important than specific elements or plants. In fact, I realized that I have been using some of these ...

Kitchen Gardens (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide) 2 reviews Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001
Great beginners book..... In the words of a local newspaper, grass is out and vegetables are in - even in the urban yard. KITCHEN GARDENS are the most "in" of all gardens and this handy little book by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a good place to start if you're thinking about growing your own vegetables at home. The book is small but loaded with information. Although some of the photographs show acreage not often found ...

Landscaping Indoors 1 review Scott D. Appell
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2000
Bamboo Garden here I come! On the design side, this book succeeds very well, there's all kinds of information here about indoor garden design elements and practices including four design plans. One nice feature of this book is it's emphasis on historical gardening practices, especially those of the Victorians (there's even a list of rare book dealers specializing in botanical history at the end of the book in case you ...

America's Garden Book: The Only Book You'll Ever Need to Plan, Design, and Grow Your Garden, Revised Edition 2 reviews Louise And James Bush-Brown
Macmillan, 1996
Everything about gardening in a single volume If I were stranded in a strange garden and could pick only one gardening book to take along, this would be the one. It's loaded with detailed information on all aspects of gardening, including photos and suggestions of exactly which species and varieties will work best in which situations. This is such a comprehensive effort that it's now possible to whittle your gardening library down to one ...

Old-Fashioned Flowers (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide) 1 review Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001
Interesting reading for gardeners and historians alike This succinct volume should appeal to more than gardeners looking for a way to add color and charm to their landscapes. Architects and landscapers seeking to create historically accurate gardens will find this book an excellent starting point. For example, they'll discover that grape vines were integral part of 19th-century gardens in the U.S. This book has several authors, each an expert in ...

Starting From Seed (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide) 1 review Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001
A Seed is Something Special Indeed Over the years, the diversity of seeds available to the gardener has decreased considerably. For vegetables, for instance, the number of non-hybrid varieties offered by seed companies is approximately 5,000 between 1984 and 1994, according to one of the authors in this fine book. Not only is this a matter of concern in terms of the stability of our food supply--lack of genetic diversity makes ...

Tantalizing Tomatoes (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide) 3 reviews Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001
Good Beginner Book This was a good beginner book on growing tomatoes. It included some history, how-to, deciphering seed packet, and information on different varieties of tomatoes. If you are passed the beginner/novice stage, I recommend some thing a little more informative. It was an easy read and it gave me some ideas to try on my suffering tomatoe plants.

Invasive Plants (Brooklyn Botanic Garden All-Region Guide) 3 reviews Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Brooklyn Botanic Garden, 2001
Concerned about weeds in the natural environment? stop here I work for the Department of Conservation in New Zealand. This book is refreshingly simple. Excellent pictures of around 50 species of invasive plants. The text explains weed environmental impacts, origins and distribution within the USA, and how to control the problem.
It is designed to be understood by all, layman and professional alike. It probably has wider application than the authors ...
