Rapunzel (Picture Puffin Books)52 reviews
Brothers Grimm

Rapunzel the Beautiful
There are many illustrated versions of Rapunzel on the children's market, but surely none can compare with Paul O. Zelinsky's Caldecott version. As he explains in "A Note about Rapunzel" in the back of the book, he traced the history of the story and discovered its roots in Italy, determining then to set his version within the artwork of Renaissance Italy. Rapunzel is the German word for a ...

Grimm's Fairy Tales9 reviews
Brothers Grimm

SeaStar, 2001

Timeless
I was given this translation 20 years ago as a child, and it is still as timeless and entertaining today as it was then. I will pass the book on to my own children, with my blessing. The tales are well-translated and carefully walk the line without being too violent or explicit for young children, while still being enchanting for older children. Furthermore, all traces of racism have been purged ...

The Twelve Dancing Princesses2 reviews
Brothers Grimm

Orchard Books, 2002

The REAL 12 Dancing Princesses
My daughter (age 4) is a big fan of the Barbie movies. I admit, they are surprisingly well-made, but I like to make sure she knows that Barbie did not invent many of those stories, so Santa gave her this book last Xmas. She loves it, and it hasn't diminished her joy in the movie at all, only added to it. The illustrations are lovely.

Hansel and Gretel16 reviews
Jacob Grimm, Brothers Grimm, ...

Putnam Juvenile, 1989

Nice quality book.
This is a nice rendition of Hansel & Gretel, much as the one I recall from my childhood. One of the only more obvious differences I noted was that it was not the "step-mother" who encouraged the father to abondon the children in the forest, but instead, the "mother," perhaps reflective of our more sensitive times. Zelinsky's illustrations, as indicated by the Caldecott Medal, enhanced the story ...

The Bremen Town Musicians6 reviews
Brothers Grimm

Bell Pond Books, 2007

Always a place in my heart
Of all the stories my father read to me as a child, this was my favorite. Its endearing story of self-discovery is timeless, and not to mention quite humorous for a six year old boy. It reminds me of a time far less complicated and will thus always hold a special place of affection for me. This was the Catcher in the Rye of my Elementary years. I would highly recommend this to anyone with ...

The Complete Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales30 reviews
BROTHERS GRIMM

Value Proprietary, 1997

WOW!!!! Beautiful!! (...and then some!)
This book is not only asthetically pleasing, with its richly colored and textured cover and gilt pages; but each and every story reflects the wonder and imagination that draws us all to fairy tales.... Inside the Grimm's are at their finest, and pulling no punches. This may be where Disney found Cinderella, Snow White and so on - but they are NOT the watered down versions we have seen in ...

The Frog Prince (Fairy Tale Classics)2 reviews
Brothers Grimm

Troll Communications, 1997

a simple idea, with a touch of genius in it
This series of readers really works. I've been running through them at bedtime with my six-year-old, who adores taking it in turns with me to read her page after I've read mine. It turns reading into a collaborative game, with plenty of play-acting (doing the different voices of the characters) thrown in. At my daughter's stage of reading, a short book can be a long haul, when she has to do it ...

The Musicians of Bremen2 reviews
Brothers Grimm

Candlewick, 2005

ILLUSTRATIONS ARE WORKS OF ART
"The Musicians of Bremen" as illustrated in watercolor and ink by Niroot Puttapipat is a treasure, a work of art. Most are well familiar with the story of the four aging animals who band together to go to Bremen and become musicians. In this artist's hands the animals look as if they have led long lives, yet they're endearing, each invested with a distinct personality that mirrors the animal's ...

Philip has faithfully translated this collection of the Grimm Brothers' anthology of oral folktales. He has chose to include twenty of the classic German tales in this beautiful edition.
