Aliens Ate My Homework (Alien Adventures)37 reviews
Bruce Coville

Aladdin, 2007

Great Book
For quirky oddballs who like thought-provoking entertainment, this book (as well as its three sequels, "I Left My Sneakers in Dimension X", "The Search for Snout", and "Aliens Stole My Body") is absolutely perfect. Of course it is written with children in mind as the primary audience, but I am certain that adults will derive just as much pleasure from reading it as their diminutive counterparts.

My Teacher Is an Alien (My Teacher Books)38 reviews
Bruce Coville

Aladdin, 2005

Clever storytelling and excellent suspense
I loved this book when I was a kid, and decided to re-read it recently. Doing that gave me a new appreciation for what Bruce has done with this story. Told from the perspective of Susan Simmons, the story fairly believably tells a tale of the impossible. Susan discovers that her new teacher, rigid and demanding Mr. Smith, is actually an alien. Furthermore, he has plans to take several of the ...

Fabulous story.
My kids really enjoyed me reading a chapter from this book every night after their meditation time. I am about to start reading The Song of the Wanderer to them now that we have finished this book.

My Teacher Flunked the Planet (My Teacher)14 reviews
Bruce Coville

Aladdin, 2005

I give this book an A+
This was an incredible ending to a fun series that was started with My Teacher is an Alien. While it remained fun, it was also much more intense, like ice water suddenly dumped on you unexpectedly. But I think it's "kid safe." As a child I saw Return to Oz and had horrid nightmares; by the age of 10 I read a short horror story for adults where I find out that the man telling the story is ...

Goblins in the Castle (Minstrel Book)25 reviews
Bruce Coville

Aladdin, 1992

14 Year Later, Still A Great Tale
I first purchased this book when I was seven years old at a school book fair because I was raised by my father on The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings and the cover, title and description looked cool. I remember vividly being in second grade and being absolutely tantalized by the day or two it took for me to finish it. It was just a wonderful tale of charming adventure that immediately struck ...

The Ghost Wore Gray (Bantam Skylark Book)7 reviews
Bruce Coville

Yearling, 1988

A Favorite That Stood the Test of Years
Reflecting on it, I realize that it was this book that engendered the great interest that I now have in the War Between the States. Years ago, I read this book for the first time, and I still do despite the "reading level" on the back. Honestly, if you ask me, ignore it! Those three letters (or letter and a number) "RL5" mean nothing as far as having a great plot, and good characters. In ...

Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher: A Magic Shop Book78 reviews
Bruce Coville

Magic Carpet Books, 2007

Great Book Fun to Read
My daughter read this book recently as an AR (Advanced Reader) Book. She loved the book and couldn't put it down. She would have to tell me all the things that were happening as she read it. This is a Level 4.9 AR book and is great for challenging a 3rd grader who is a very good reader. I would highly recommend this book.

Hamlet2 reviews
Bruce Coville

Dial, 2004

Shakespeare, illuminated!
Alas, poor Yorick! If only this book had been available to me in middle school so many years ago, I might have enjoyed the Shakespeare studies in college! Coville deftly, delicately weaves the intricate tale of Hamlet, remaining true to Shakespeare's milieu, language, and character, but illuminating the plot with action and suspense. It is an exciting presentation that would leave students ...

Juliet Dove Queen of Love is about a girl, Juliet, who wonders into a mystical magic shop hidden in a part of her town. When she walks into the shop a lady at the counter showed Juliet an amulet. William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream1 review
Bruce Coville

Puffin, 2003

Wonderful way to bring Shakespeare to children
My daughter is five and loves all of the fantasy farytales ... cinderella, sleeping beauty, etc ... I am getting a little bored with these. When we encountered this book, she was captivated. It was refreshing for me. She loves the illustrations and will look at them on her own. It's a little bit over her head. However, it is a well done adaptation for kids. So, we will be reading this book ...

The Evil Elves (Moongobble and Me)6 reviews
Bruce Coville

Aladdin, 2006

Engaging and Fun
Bruce Coville has written a wonderful trio of books for the beginning reader. The characters in this story are amusing, especially the Rusty Knight, and the talking frog. Edward is a bland main character, but serves a purpose as the straight man around whom all the magic takes place. I will be using the book in my 2nd grade classroom this year, and feel that the short chapters and solid ...

Armageddon Summer71 reviews
Jane Yolen, Bruce Coville

Harcourt Paperbacks, 1999

Excellent Young Adult Book
ARMAGEDDON SUMMER is an excellent book for young adults that can be enjoyed by more sophisticated adult readers as well. It reminded me a great deal of Paul Zindel's classic THE PIGMAN both in how the story alternates between a boy and a girl narrating the story and in how the teenagers are often the more sane members of their families. Aside from the voices of the teens radio talk show ...

The Dragon of Doom (Moongobble and Me)8 reviews
Bruce Coville

Aladdin, 2005

Great Read Aloud For 4 and 5 year olds
There are not all that many good books that you can read aloud to 4 and 5 year olds. Moongobble (a series, currently there are 4 books) is a good example of a book that young people will enjoy listening to, and the adult won't be bored out of his mind. This is the first book in the Moongobble and Me series. Edward, a young boy apprentices to a neophyte wizard, Moongobble. Moongobble has a ...

The Weeping Werewolf (Moongobble and Me)3 reviews
Bruce Coville

Aladdin, 2005

More excellence from Bruce Coville
The Moongobble books, while at a 9 YO reading independent reading level, are fine fare for the 5 and 6 YO set who enjoy a good solid story time. The ideas are simple while the vocabulary leaps just enough ahead to make 'em reach. Great stories, great vocabulary and excellent illustrations make these fine gifts for small kids who love to be read to, and bigger kids who love to read.
