After the Off: Photographs by Bruce Gilden, Short Story by Dermot Healy2 reviews
Bruce Gilden, Dermot Healy

Dewi Lewis Publishing, 2002

Bruce Gilden's Look At Irish Horse Racing
"After the Off" is yet another brilliant documentary photograph book of Bruce Gilden's work. His artistic motifs of flash and disembodied figures leads to a riveting, mesmerizing look at the seemingly mundane world of Irish horse racing. Anyone thinking of a placid view of Irish racing will be stunned, and perhaps, shocked by his photographs. Dermot Healy's short story is a fine coupling, but it ...

Bruce Gilden: Go2 reviews

Trebruk Publishing, 2002

a modern masterwork of new journalism
this is a great book. gilden has gone into an unknown territory here, away from his overcomfortable new york and into the streets and underground clubs of japan. this is a perfect example of the kind of new photojournalism that is the best of what the once great magnum still has to offer. (see luc delahaye for other examples, although he left the agency a few years ago)

A Beautiful Catastrophe1 review

powerHouse Books, 2005

another excellent installment, but not the best
this is a good book, no doubt by a master of the medium, but in the series of similarly sized and designed books by gilden this just isn't probably his best. see 'go' and 'coney island' for his most brilliant books. as for his publishing and design, it has become a part of his genius. i only wish the bindings were a bit stronger, my copy split noticeably after a few readings.

Haiti2 reviews
Bruce Gilden

Dewi Lewis Publishing, 2002

A Dark, Despairing Look At Haiti
Bruce Gilden's "Haiti" is a stark, dismal landscape of poverty which easily conjurs up bleak images of the Congo in Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness". Yet it is as riveting as any photographs I've seen from the likes of Salgado and Cartier-Bresson. However, unlike Salgado and Cartier-Bresson, Gilden is content to use his Leica to show viewers the truth, without seeking to portray his poor ...

Bruce Gilden: Coney Island1 review
Bruce Gilden

Trebruk Publishing, 2002

Excellent Overview of Bruce Gilden's earliest work
"Coney Island" is a splendid collection of photographer Bruce Gilden's first important fine art documentary photography project, depicting the denizens of Coney Island. As such it is a vivid exploration of his early career as one of New York City's - and the world's - foremost street photographers (He is currently a member of Magnum Photos, the distinguished photojournalism agency.). ...

Facing New York2 reviews
Bruce Gilden

Dewi Lewis Publishing, 2002

The Debut Of One of Our Most Important Photographers
It's hard to describe Bruce Gilden. He's the Randy Johnson of street photography; one hand on his Leica rangefinder, the other on a flash, waiting to pounce on his next subject like a peregrine falcon. "Facing New York" was the book which made his reputation as a hard-edge street photographer of New York City life. He's as tenacious as any paparazzi, yet his photographs are more profound, more ...

Fashion Magazine by Bruce Gilden
