Wisconsin's Champion Trees: A Tree Hunter's Guide1 review
R. Bruce Allison

University of Wisconsin Press, 2005

not much to entertain
This book is basically a list with numbers and measurments. There are no anecdotes and the pictures are black and white and unexceptional. It was listed as "being taken on a tour" of Wisconsin's big trees but that really is not accurate. It is simply a tree by tree listing and the same info can be found on the Wisconsin DNR website for free.

Ronald Hoffman, Bruce Furie, ...

Churchill Livingstone, 2008

Best Residency Program Book
I am one of 60 postgraduate hematology residents enrolled in a training program in Iraq supervised by Professor Anwar Sheikha, MD, FRCP, FRCPath. We were looking for a reference book to guide us through our intensive training curriculum. This book came as every one's favorite! Though heavy and difficult to handle, especially for a petit lady like myself, the chapters are short, informative, ...

State of the Struggle: Report on the Battle Against Global Terrorism1 review
Lee Hamilton, Bruce Hoffman, ...

Council on Global Terrorism, 2007

uneasy reading of unaddressed weaknesses
Here is an unsettling little read, provided by the Council on Global Terrorism. It points out an increasing Islamist radicalisation. Not just in the Middle East, but also in the Muslim diaspora in the developed countries. Topics including US homeland defense, against chemical, biological or nuclear attacks. Much has not been done. Maybe the surprise is that, as the current Administration is ...

The Victims of Terrorism: An Assessment of Their Influence and Growing Role in Policy, Legislation, and the ...
Bruce Hoffman

RAND Corporation, 2007

Organized groups of victims' families and friends have emerged since September 11, 2001, to become a powerful voice in U.S. counterterrorist policy and legislation. These groups were remarkably successful in getting the 9/11 Commission established and in getting the commission's most important recommendations enacted. This report documents these groups and compares them to groups formed in response to other terrorist attacks.

Bruce Hoffman, William Rosenau, ...

RAND Corporation, 2007

Over the past two years, certain Diaspora communities, frustrated with a perceived war against the Muslim world, have turned against their adopted homelands, targeting the government and its people by supporting terrorist attacks against Western countries through recruitment, fundraising, and training. Critical issues include incidents that prove these communities will indeed attack their adopted homelands; that recruits come from converts to ...

Inside Terrorism20 reviews
Bruce Hoffman

Columbia University Press, 2006

analyzes the political tactics of terrorism
I found this book to be quite enlightening as well as fascinating to read. Refusing to engage in the political rhetoric surrounding terrorism, the author, Bruce Hoffman, (an expert in counter-terrorism at West Point as well as a professor at Georgetown)follows the evolution of terrorism as a means of calling world attention to forgotten or underpublicized plights of the disenfranchised in order ...

Defense Policy and Low-Intensity Conflict: The Development of Britain's "Small Wars" Doctrine During the ...1 review
Bruce Hoffman, Jennifer M. Taw

Rand Corp, 1991

Essential text for those seeking greater definitons of COIN
The pamphlet is a wonderful starting point for those researching COIN (Counter Insurgency). The Britsh were one of the few nations to "get it right" when facing Mao style insurgency. This pamphlet provides a brief overview of the tactics, techniques and learning points from the Britsh experiences in Malaya, Kenya and Cyprus. Hoffman and Taw have an excellent grasp on the subject and their ...

Security in the Nation's Capital and the Closure of Pennsylvania Avenue: An Assessment
Bruce Hoffman, Peter Chalk

RAND Corporation, 2001

Acts of terrorism are not a new threat to Washington, D.C. Over the past two centuries, there have been several organized terrorist attacks, as well as numerous assaults by unstable individuals acting alone, that have targeted the White House and U.S. Capitol building and the President or U.S. Congressmen within the city limits of the District of Columbia. Nevertheless, it was not until the 1980s that such incidents evoked heightened security ...
