Henry I (The English Monarchs Series)6 reviews
C. Warren Hollister

Yale University Press, 2003

an outstanding biography
This biography follows the typical outline of books in the English Monarch series, namely a set of chapters describing the life chronologically, followed by a set of chapters discussing key topics (in this case, on topics such as administrative reforms, and relationships with the church), followed by a concluding chapter which discusses the end of the monarch's life and sums up contributions. ...

The West Transformed3 reviews
C. Warren Hollister, J. Sears McGee, ...

Harcourt Brace College Publishers, 1999

A very good book
I used this book for my survey course in European history, and it was excellent. It is very descriptive and very interesting to read. It can be a little dense at times, but it is well worth the price,

Great Short History
This book is a great overview of medieval Europe. It is packed with information and is a dense read, but worth it.

Medieval Europe: A Short Sourcebook2 reviews
C. Warren Hollister, Joe W. Leedom, ...

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2001

Fascinating
This is an excellent and comprehensive collection of sources from the Middle Ages in Europe. Roots of the Western Tradition8 reviews
Guy Rogers, C. Warren Hollister

McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages, 2007

A well written 200+ page overview
This book is a survey of the main themes in ancient history. It is not, and obviously is not meant to be, a detailed history. It provides a good overview for the casual reader, and a basic foundation for those wanting to learn more. I disagree with the reviews that state the book is inaccurate or a waste of time.

Medieval Europe1 review
C.Warren Hollister, Judith Bennett

McGraw Hill Higher Education, 2005

An especially well-balanced view of the middle ages in Europe
The first edition came out in 1964, and has become a franchise in the American texts on the subject, now carried forward by a younger historian, J. Bennett. Hollister wrote the first few editions alone, writing clearly and making narrative sense out of the confusion of centuries, peoples, without an overload of academic quarrels, so it is a good book for interested readers who are NOT taking a ...
