Happy Return 2 reviews C.S. Forester
Penguin Putnam~mass, 1969
A delightful listen! I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the adventures of Hornblower and the way he was able to capture the Natividad, a much larger ship. Ioan Gruffudd knows how to use his acting abilities to portray the emotions of the characters such as Hornblower, Bush, and Lady Barbara. I honestly could not tell that it was his voice doing the characters which makes for a very entertaining listen.

The Sky and the Forest 2 reviews C. S. Forester
Books on Tape, 1948
Forester's single great work. I love C.S. Forester's writing. I've read the Hornblower series so many times I've worn out a set or two, loaning them to friends and acquaintances. But I don't pretend the Hornblower series is anything more than a fun, interesting journey through the life of an imaginary man. The Sky and the Forest is another matter. Forester sets the novel deep in Africa at that crucial moment in history ...

Captain Horatio Hornblower 8 reviews C. S. Forester
Little Brown & Co (T), 1939
The novel that started a genre Captain Horatio Hornblower is a collection of three short novels originally published in 1937 and 1938 as "Beat To Quarters", "Ship of the Line" and "Flying Colours". All are set during the Napoleonic wars roughly between 1807 and 1811. The great success of these stories led Forester to write a number of Hornblower prequels and sequels, all of which are still read widely. It also spawned a long ...

The general 9 reviews C. S Forester
Bantam Books, 1953
Generals fighting the last war While most of the authors novels were set during the time of Napoleon, some were set at later times including the well known novel, "The African Queen," and this lesser known novel, "The General," both of which were set during World War I. It has often been said that generals plan tactics based on the last war. Napoleon had developed tactics based on an artillery barrage followed by an attack ...

The Young Hornblower Omnibus 4 reviews C.S. Forester
Penguin Books Ltd, 1998
Three Complete Books in one cover, NOT all sequential Just as the Hornblower novels were not written in chronological order, this combination is #1, 2 and, I think, 5 (Not counting the short story "Hornblower's Temptation" in book "H..during the Crisis"). Same with "Indomitable Hornblower" 3 novels in one cover, but not in sequence. Not knocking the Novels, but the concept seems odd

The Captain from Connecticut 16 reviews C. S Forester
The Sun Dial Press, 1945
A wonderful tale of Yankee grit. A great sea story! This is a fine novel by CS Forester, the author of the magnificent Hornblower series of novels. It tells the story of a fictional American naval sea captain during the War of 1812, one Captain Josiah Peabody--an American charged with the mission of breaking the British blocade of the fledgling United States and wreaking havoc with the British sea lanes. This, he understands, will give America ...

Lieutenant Hornblower 49 reviews C. S. Forester
Little Brown & Co (T), 1952
Among the better of the Hornblower books This is the sixth Hornblower book I've read, although it's only the second in terms of the chronology of Hornblower's naval career. And I must say, it's one of the better books. CS Forester could be a compelling writer, but some of the Hornblower novels feel a little disjointed. Not this one.
Lieutenant Hornblower is written from the point of view of Lieutenant Bush, whom Hornblower meets ...

Brown on Resolution 5 reviews C.S. Forester
Pan Books, 1968
Brown on Resolution is C. S. Forester's Best Book While I saw the film version of this book during the 1950s, I only realized that the movie was derived from one of C. S. Forester's early works when I discovered a tattered paperback using the American edition title of "Singlehanded" on a remainder table. For $.25 I was able to read a masterpiece now almost forgotten, and all the more amazing because of how young Forester was when he wrote it -- ...

Age of a Fighting S 1 review C. S. Forester
Signet, 1978
American History. I bought this book 'blind' from Amazon. I had no knowledge of its contents and only my respect for C.S.Forester's writing to guide me. I had hoped it would be an explanation of naval warfare at the time of the Napoleonic wars. In fact it turned out to be a remarkable account of the Anglo-American conflict of 1812. My initial disapointment was largely offset by the quality of the book. Forester's ...

The Sky and the Forest 2 reviews C. S. Forester
Little, Brown and Co., 1948
Thoroughly engrossing If you are all ready a C.S Forester reader this will be a singular addition to your collection. It's the telling of an African king's life. His reign coincides with the gradual incursion of Europeans into the deep forest. The characters are portrayed with stunning and often brutal authenticity, free of judgement or sentiment. Forester presents an old and well-ordered society who for very ...

Beat to quarters (Armed Services edition) 46 reviews C. S Forester
Editions for the Armed Services, 1945
Historical Fiction at Its Best...and a Grand Hero C. S. Forester, Beat to Quarters.
Patrick O'Brian, Master and Commander
I've begun reading C. S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower novels for the fourth or fifth time and I'm enjoying them almost as much as the first time through. Last year, I read about half of Patrick O'Brian's stunning Aubrey-Maturin sea novels for a second time: they didn't lose a thing in the rereading, they're so good. Both ...

The Man in the Yellow Raft 1 review C. S. Forester
Pinnacle, 1976
excellent stories about the US Navy in the Pacific War This year my literary project was to read all of CS Forester's books on the sea and naval warfare. Of his fiction, and I include his celebrated Hornblower series, this collection of stories ranks near the top in conveying the sense of man at sea and at war. These are terrific stories, and together with the collection in Gold from Crete (of which see my review), the reader is guaranteed ...

Young Hornblower; Three Complete Novels 1 review C.S. Forester
Little, Brown and Company, 1953
Boiling Adventure Horatio Hornblower has escaped this land lubber nearly as long as Hornblower served in the British Navy. I'm sad to realize the richness of Foresters' Hornblower laid off my bow's for so long but little could reflect my supreme joy at finding the series when the influence of the fictitious but nearly mythical figure was sorely needed in my life.
I understand that Foresters' writing was at one ...

Single-Handed 1 review C.S. Forester
Books on Tape, Inc., 1993
The Perfect Novella The editorial review set forth above does not even begin to do justice to this work. As with several of C.S. Forester's books, this one has been published under another name. I think it is better known as "Brown on Resolution." Long out of print, used copies command a good price. This is the story of what one determined man with a rifle can do, even in the face of great odds. Brown is a ...

Randall and the river of time 1 review C. S Forester
Queens House, 1976
A lesser known work by Forester Most of you who have come across this work have probably read the Hornblower series, Rifleman Dodd, The Captain from Connecticut, etc. I recently started looking for some of the more obscure or hard to find works by C.S. Forester and this was one of them. This is the story of a World War I officer -- Charles Randall -- and his experiences in life ranging from the Great War, his wife (and her ...

The Nightmare 1 review C.S. Forester
Pinnacle Books, 1981
The Nightmare: timely as ever C.S. Forester, author of the wonderful Hornblower series, wrote (not too long after its downfall) a very readable piece of historical fiction about the Third Reich. Quoting from his introduction: "During the dozen years of the Nazi regime in Germany crimes were committed, usually quite legally and according to the letter of the law, that could hardly find a parallel in the most debased days of ...

Hornblower and the "Hotspur" 24 reviews C. S. Forester

Brings the moment to vivid life This novel was written after 'Beat To Quarters', but chronogically takes place before.
This was my favorite in the series. A landlubber all my life, Mr. Forester's writing brings the seaman's life to vivid imagery.
Hornblower is in command of the Hotspur and for part of the story is autonomous on the seas, indulging in his spirit of adventure. Every sea battle is unique. It's during the ...

Mr Midshipman Hornblower 80 reviews C. S. Forester
Harper Audio, 1999
Amazing naval fun! I can't believe that I've never read this series! After wrapping up Cornwell's Sharpe's series, I was desperate for another good series on the Napoleonic wars, and I came across Forseter's Hornblower books. Lots of action and a style that makes you feel like you're on deck, reefing the tops'ls right along with 'em!

Mr. Midshipman Hornblower 1 review C. S. Forester
Penguin, 1986
Stands the test of time Mr. Midshipman Hornblower is without a doubt one of the best novels I have ever read regardless of genre. My exposure to C.S. Forester's classic works was a little unorthodox. Unorthodox that unlike most books I have read I saw a cinematic adaptation before reading the novel rather then the other way around. The A&E presentation was very good and entertaining and I new that these were books that ...
