Calef Brown's latest book is awesome. It's a celebration for an imaginary town and will make you wish you could live there. I first heard about it through Publisher's Weekly, it got a rave review, comparing Brown's prose to Edward Lear, his art to Picasso! And I have to say, it didn't disappoint! I was given this book (and it's matching stickers and magnets) as a xmas gift for my 5YO son who loves dinosaurs and monsters and now he is OBSESSED with it and wants it read to him every day! It has totally gotten him interested in greek mythology and given him a very impressive knowledge of the characters that most adults can't claim. Great for kids
The pop-ups are cute. The fables are very kid-friendly. It's mostly geared towards a younger audience though. Sometimes these pop ups are so engaging that I find myself wanting to buy it for my adult friends. This one is certainly more for a younger audience; to introduce them to classic fables in a new way. Pretty good book
These are more like short, one-page poems than stories. My five year old loves it. We both like the books "Frankenstein Makes A Sandwich" and "Making Friends With Frankenstein" more, but this is pretty cute, too. His favorite poem has a line about "polka-bats dropping polka turds on people down below". There's also a cute poem about snails invading someone's house. A very fun read!
We love rhyming stories, and Flamingos on the Roof is no exception. I read a great review about Calef Brown in Wondertime magazine and was not disappointed. Whereas Shel Silverstein is a bit gruesome and crude, Brown's poetry is simple yet creative, fun and silly, and all around great reading with your little one.
