A simple hymn, a profound truth
"Jesus loves me" is more than a simple child's hymn. It is the cry of all Christians. Calvin Miller masterfully takes the simple words of this familiar hymn and inspires us all to bask in the glow of God's love. Using the song as his outline, Miller explores the deep truths expressed by simple faith. Opening the door on his own life and weaving it with the experience of Christians from all ...

Great Hillarious Poems
This book is SOOO good. It was written for smaller children, but the lessons are incredible even for older children, teens, and adults. The Nonconformist Splat, for example, is about someone who is so "immune" to peer pressure that they do everything the opposite way everybody else does: they jump off a cliff when everybody else decides not to.

The Table of Inwardness
What a beautiful book. I hope my thoughts will do it justice. So many times in this life we focus on the outside of Christianity, sharing the gospel, feeding the hungry, comforting the grieving. And while all of these things are important, we can be doing them for Christ as well as the pat on the back that comes along with it. This book helps one to focus on what you do when you're alone, when ...

Poetic, biblical, and artistic devotional for the Lent and Resurrection Christian season
4.5 STARS out of 5 This review is for the paperback version. This awesome paperback read is great for this Lenten and Paschal season (and future ones). The daily devotions start with the accounts of Jesus and the disciples during the weeks before Crucifixion, continues with the Passion Week, Crucifixion, and the glorious Resurrection and Ascension. What I like about this devotional is ...

Valiant Papers
Many years ago, I read this book. For years afterwards, whenever I had a situation, and worked it out.... I would think "I wonder what my Guardian Angel thinks?" I still think about my guardian Angel. Just recently I taught my granddaughter, who is 5 years old about her guardian Angel. She now thanks God for her Angel in her prayers. I would recommend this book to anyone who is ...

Awesome!
This is one of those books I read over and over again. I have read it probably 20 times since my first reading. Calvin Miller puts biblical stories into narrative poems that are so well written they force you to turn the page again and again. This book is the first in the Singer Trilogy, followed by The Song and The Finale. It is a poetic retelling of three biblical books: The Singer parallels ...

Awesome! The most moving story of love I have ever read!
This book was recommended to me by a close friend who knows my hunger for good literature. At first I was captivated by the fact that the author took an age old story (Adam & Eve) and was able to weave a tale of unconditional love, lust, envy, hate and vulnerability. I couldn't put this one down. With every turn of the page I was more and more captivated by these characters and the turmoil that ...

Balanced presentation that leads to liberty
This book, like many of Miller's works, blends imagination and 'humanness' with the wonderfully liberating foundation of the Word. There are so many off-the-wall presentations dealing with the influence of evil in our lives, this book is a joy to experience. Without underestimating the power and presence of the Evil One in the world, Miller clearly puts the proper perspective on the ...

Great book for family reading at Christmas
I have used this book for two years during Advent to read aloud to my family as we finish dinner. My 12 year-old at first thought it was silly, but she is always captivated by the stories. I like the blend of fiction, nonfiction, sentimental, and compelling selections. We have learned about Christmas for some Civil War soldiers, read some old classics such as The Gift of the Magi, and ...

Beautifully-written work on Holy Spirit
Calvin Miller's book "Loving God Up Close" is a beautifully-written meditation on the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. As Eugene Peterson describes it, "Miller invites us into a confident conversation on God's inimitable way of being with us." Miller shares some wonderful insights in this delightful volume. The best book on preaching I've read
This book is absolutely the best book on preaching I've read. It came at just the right time in my life, and tackled issues in my life that needed attention. Calvin argues that good sermons don't come from just good preparation or homiletical practice. They come from a life well lived. "Great preaching only grows out of the soil of great lives." He tackles the issues of passion, the ...

Developing the Christian Mind ... a contemplation
As someone with the rare and special privilege of knowing Calvin Miller as both a professor and as a friend, I feel as if I could write this review for almost every book he has written. For what you read in his books, tells the true story of the man. He is talented, humble and genuine in his search to serve and magnify the glory of God. This book touched me on a personal level because the ...

Tea and Spirituality
I have settled into this routine: each morning, a cup of tea and a "day" from Miller's "Celtic Devotions." This ritual fills me, opens possibility, sometimes admonishes, always inspires. A "day" from Miller's pages is arranged like this... an opening prayer or meditation, then Morning Reading, Morning Prayer, Evening Reading and Evening Prayer. I take the whole day at once, knowing myself; I ...

Enter The Presence of God
This book came into my life at a very low time for me (my house had burned and that had ramifications financially, physically, emotionally and spiritually for me). With the help of this book I was able to come into the presence of God. God gave me comfort, assurance, and direction. I became a fan of Calvin Miller. His other books that I have read since this first one have not disappointed.
