EXCEEDED MY HIGH EXPECTATIONS
All of the comic history-related books TwoMorrows Publishing puts out are worthwhile, but this is the best one yet. Author Mike W. Barr really goes the extra mile here and it shows. Not just a dry recitation of facts, Barr weaves together interesting factoids and makes connections where you least expect it. Wonderfully illustrated with vintage art, there are plot synopses of the biggies like ...

More what if
This is of course the third volume in the Marvel What if series that collects issues 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, and 20. This edition has good content in it. What if Sgt. Fury had fought World War 2 in outer space?: This is more of an alternate timeline. Where the plot begins during the 15th century. Da Vinci creates designs for an airplane but was never built until the Wright Brothers built one in ...

Lets hear it for the girl!
in 1967, Batman was on TV and the Batman family had a new dynamic. Not longer was it a duo, it became a trio with the creative idea Batgirl. You must remember in the 1950's, There was Batwoman, Bathound and Batmite (an imp who loved Batman and created problems for him). Batgirl gave the Batman family a thought provoling ally.A woman who a brain who did not cater to Batman like a 1950's household ...

The Caped Crusader at his best!
What's great about this book is the range of the stories. Some have a light tone reminicent of the "Batman" TV series of the sixties, (The Metamporpho team-up even MENTIONS the show) others are dark, pulpy mysteries, (the Neal Adams drawn Deadman team-ups are particularly good) No matter which interpretation of the Dark Knight you prefer, your bound to dig at least a few of these tales. Nearly ...

A must purchase if...
A must purchase for any DC collector...if he does not already own the Flash Archives 1 - 3. If so, this title is redundant. Still for non-Archives owners, we have here a bargain book reprinting from Showcase and Flash 105 - 111. Enjoy. Volume 2 will be a keeper going beyond Archives #4. The Showcase Presents series is well worth looking at!

Iron Man's best story in it's best format
The story is classic by now and known not only to Iron Man fans, so the contex of this book won't be reviewed here. What is worth saying is the top quality paper and wonderfull job done at the colours. Additional credits should be given for the hard cover and the jacket illustration. Every issue comes with it's original cover. This is Iron Man and Marvel at their best. May many more stories ...

Omnibus in color (Essential in black and white)
I purchased the Essential Howard the Duck and was bummed that the book ended before the story played out, and the art was black and white. So I ordered Howard The Duck Omnibus and got the whole story in color. If you want to read Howard The Duck, get the Omnibus.

Essential Nova, Volume 1
10 reasons why I love Nova: One: The costume. This is one of the most dynamic superhero costumes of all time. It screams spaceman, it screams power, it screams raw brash energy. I love the colours, I love the whole get-up. I would wear that. I would fly around in that. Two: Nova discovering his powers. He gets these awesome powers without really even knowing how to use them. It's neat ...

The Thinking Man's Superhero in some of his best stories!
Adam Strange was cool. That's all you can say. He was cool. Regularly transported across space by the Zeta beam from Earth to Rann and back again, Adam became the planetary champion of Rann and found himself in a lot of classic Silver Age adventures. And along the way, he also romanced one of the hottest women in Silver Age comics, Alanna, the daughter of Rann's leading scientist, Sardath. ...

More classic Star Wars. Well-drawn, well-written.
I started picking up the Star Wars comics halfway through its run -- right when this book takes off. Compared to the first issues in the series, the art is quite sophisticated and matches well with the imagery seen in the films. Characterizations are remarkably deep considering the plotters were barred from using situations that would pop up in Return of the Jedi. My favorite bit deals with a ...

An essential collection for an overlooked character
In some respects, the stories are not terribly complex: Ghost Rider travels across the country, chases bad guys and punishes them. However, there is real drama between Johnny Blaze and the Ghost Rider, as the spirit's real personality starts to come to life, and takes a toll on Blaze's personal life. Highly recommended.

Great stories geares to a more adult audience
I've picked up about a half a dozen of these b&w Marvel and DC reprints and Adam Strange is the best one so far. Strange is a more down-to-earth (or down-to-Rann, I guess) character. He has no super power and doesn't make clever or lame quips as he k.o.'s the bad guys. He behaves much like you or I would react to a problem, which makes it easier to identify with the hero. Every story is a very ...

Spider-Woman Redux
After years of hiatus, Spider-Woman has returned to her roots with "New Avengers". Essentially playing a support role now, it's fun to look back and remember when Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman was the star of her own on-going comic book series. Having no relation to the more famous Spiderman, Spider-Woman let loose on the world of Marvel in the late 1970's. The stories collection in the this ...

A CELEBRATION OF THE JUSTICE LEAGUE
When I first started reading comics in the early 1970's, I was almost exclusively a Marvel fan and didn't read many DC comics at all. I was lucky enough to have an older brother who as a big DC can and among the books in his collection was a full run of Justice League of America from #50 through #120. Reading his comics (when he wasn't around, of course) was my introduction to one of the great ...

Simply put, any of the Silver Age volumes in DC Comics Showcase and Marvel's Essentials are better crafted, and more fun than the current kill 'em all and let god sort 'em out software those companies now publish. The fourth volume of The Flash Archives delivers more examples of wonderous Silver Age classics. Once again we are treated to the graceful realistic-looking art of Carmine Infantino and Joe Giella and exciting stories by John Broome (with one issue scripted by Gardner Fox featuring the Golden Age Flash).
