Before Columbus: The Americas of 1491 (Downtown Bookworks Books)28 reviews
Charles C. Mann

Atheneum, 2009

Required Reading on the History of the Western Hemisphere
This beautiful book was written and is marketed as a short and sweet "student's version" of the book 1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus, by the same author, Charles C. Mann. The original book was a New York Times bestseller and won several national book prizes. This more colorful but more approachable book aimed at younger readers takes the high points and delivers them in a ...

1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus243 reviews
Charles C. Mann

Vintage, 2006

The year before...
It's a great title, and a great book. Though some reviewers have fussed at the sub-title, claiming that there weren't really new revelations in the book, should I be ashamed to admit that almost all the book was history of the best kind; the history I did not know? Of course the book is not literally about that year; it covers the period from the very first arrival of humans in America, which ...

Ancient Americans2 reviews
Charles C Mann

Granta Books, 2005

It's 1491, but worth a read
I've read 1491, by the same author. It's an excellent book. If you haven't read it, READ IT. But, based on the Tables of Contents, which are identical, this book and 1491 are the same book. The exact page counts do differ, and I haven't done a page-for-page comparison, but the Tables of Contents are the same. I hope this helps.

The Second Creation: Makers of the Revolution in Twentieth-Century Physics8 reviews
Robert P. Crease, Charles C. Mann

MacMillan, 1986

Excellent history of particle physics
This book is an excellent choice if you are looking for an easy-to-read history of the development of particle physics in the twentieth century. The book almost reads like a novel. The authors lead us on a tour of the most critical breakthroughs from the discovery of the electron to that of the top quark. Each episode describes not only the physics but also provides interesting insights into the ...

Material World: A Global Family Portrait58 reviews
Peter Menzel, Charles C. Mann

Sierra Club Books, 1995

invaluable and fascinating
I thought my six-year-old daughter might be interested in this book, as she liked What the World Eats (same authors, kids' version of Hungry Planet). It seemed like an accessible way to learn about daily life in other countries--especially important for understanding the earthquake in Haiti in human terms. But I wasn't prepared for how obsessed with it she would become. On first pass, she took ...

Fascinating stuff
I do love reading history, and this one was totally readable. Most interesting.

The Aspirin Wars: Money, Medicine and 100 Years of Rampant Competition2 reviews
Charles C. Mann, Mark L. Plummer

Harvard Business School Press, 1993

A most facinating case study of international Business
I first picked up this book in the bargain bin at my college bookstore for only $1.00. It is probably the most interesting non-fiction book I have ever read. Even though it concentrates on the trials and tribulations of aspirin, it gives an interesting picture of over-the-counter drug marketing and promotion during the 20th century. The book is well researched, with liberal footnotes. The ...

Noah's Choice: The Future of Endangered Species1 review
Charles C. Mann

Knopf, 1995

Avoids controversy
I can't remember where I first saw this book reviewed and recommended, but I do remember that I couldn't check it out in the school library because one of the Range Science professors put it on reserve for his class. That intrigued me enough to just buy it. I found the first 3/4 of the book fascinating as it described a variety of encounters between human activity and species decline. Mann ...

At Large: the Strange Case of the World's Biggest Internet Invasion24 reviews
Charles C. Mann

Simon & Schuster, 1997

Fascinating!
This book chronicles the exploits of a young computer enthusiast who managed to break into an alarming number of computers, mainly by sheer perseverance. The book is also the story of the people who hunted this early cybercriminal and how he was ultimately caught. One of the remarkable aspects of the story is that the chief antagonist (the "hacker") was not particularly skilled. He was ...
