Great for middle grades
I purchased a set of five of these books for my seventh grade class to read in book groups. This has been one of the biggest hits of the class! EVERYONE wants to read it. (In junior high, this is rare.) Every day, a student approaches me to enthusiastically share a fact from the book. Science teachers have been asking me about it because the kids are telling them about it. I have only read parts ...

The Harvest
Why are all the best books out of print? And why didn't this man get some sort of award for this book? It was an old topic explored in an original way. I read this on a road trip from Ohio to Florida, and I will tell you, I hated when I had to take my turn driving. I could not get my mind off of this book from page one until the end. What an excellent storyteller this author is!

I really enjoyed this book
I read the book and then recommended it to a book club I was organizing. We used it as our first book and everyone enjoyed it. I found the stories spellbinding and the history was very interesting. Nick Wilson led a fasinating life and I would recommend this book to anyone interested in history from the old West.

reincarnational
Long, long before the druids formed, there was (is) a race of blue people who came to earth from a distant star. They came as teachers and friends and helped those who dwelled in what is now England, to understand the Nature of Reality. Stonehenge was built as a landing platform for their ship. Stone was the only reliable, nonmagnetic material available. Decadence set in and they came no ...

Dourly illustrated, it accurately represents the situation in London in the mid ninteenth century
"Great Expectations" is one of the few works by Charles Dickens that I had neither read nor had any contact with. Other than knowing title and author, I had no knowledge of the work before reading this book. After reading it, I can say that the effect was what one would hope the Classics Illustrated works would have on people. The contact generated a desire in me to read the original work. The ...

Fantasy Architecture that could have been...
This book is full of houses, buildings, cities and other architectural designs that could have been built, if there had been more money or less common sense. Many of these designs are before there time and some are just ideas that could never be. Tombs, bridges, toys, video games and other items from the past that have shaped and channeled our ideas of modern and future architecture. The book ...

A comprehensive look at our environment
A comprehensive analysis and commentary on America's physical and social infrastructure, Kilbert has compiled an impressive list of authors/environmental policy specialists. They speak to issues as seemingly diverse as the moral burdens being placed on future generations by short sighted environmental policy to practical solutions ( the Brownfields initiative)for reusing old industrial land in ...

Great Anthology...a must for SF readers and writers...
I was able to read the ARC of this book prior to its release, and I was very, very pleased with the selections. I enjoyed 14/21 stories in this, with Robert Charles Wilson's, Paolo Bacigalupi's, Elizabeth Bear's, Louise Marley's, and the Mike Resnick/Nancy Kress piece being my personal faves for their "wow" factor. I recognized some of the stories in this anthology were not to my particular SF ...

The Big Idea . . .
Every once in a while I start reading a book that has a really novel idea, a big idea, so different in scope that I wonder how in the hell the author thought of it. This is one of those books. The book is Spin by Robert Charles Wilson and the idea is this: one day all the stars and the moon are gone. The earth is enveloped by a membrane that shields it from the rest of the universe, but ...

Spinning on its AXIS Robert Charles Wilson's sequel may be smaller in scale but it's still a fascinating well written novel
A solid sequel that suffers from middle-child syndrome (not getting enough respect or praise), AXIS is a much more intimate, smaller scaled novel when compared to the superb Hugo Award winning SPIN. WARNING: SOME SPOILERS AHEAD: Author Robert Charles Wilson deals with the post-SPIN world and where the arch that the Hypotheticals erected on Earth leads to combining two different narrative ...

Lobster bisque
First, my negative criticisms: 1. The "lobster-not-a-lobster" alien, who stands still a lot. 2. Wilson's annoying narrator-shifts in mid-scene. 3. Ray, the main antagonist, who didn't enable me to suspend disbelief. He's an SOB to be sure, but there wasn't anything tangibly good about him either (which, I feel, is the mark of a good antagonist). But the good outweighs the bad by a long ...

A unique scifi story that succeeds as a romance as well!
Wilson is one of the today's best science fiction writers and "A Bridge of Years" is his most moving book. This story of a house that serves as a crossroad in time weaves together the unique romance of an unlikely couple, a reluctant soldier from the future and a mysterious caretaker from an enlightened era. Suspense and insight are expertly balanced in the three storylines. "A Bridge of ...

Excellent parallel universe adventure
Mysterium_ by Robert Charles Wilson is a very well done, engrossing earlier work of the author's, one that I don't believe has gotten anywhere near the attention of his later works (such as _Darwinia_, _Bios_, and _The Chronoliths_). It is also unfortunately out of print, though there are a great many used copies out there at relatively cheap prices. _Mysterium_ is a book one could place in ...

Autobiography of Ohiyesa
If you have read the writings of Ohiyesa (Charles Alexander Eastman); I HIGHLY recommend this book to you. It helped me understand the forces that shaped this man. My favorite areas are The assorted photos of his father "Many Lightnings", his wife, his son Ohiyesa at the age of 5. Events that occured while he was attending school in the East, and the bigotry he encountered from "SOME" white ...
Gambling: Behavior Theory, Research, and Application
Context Press
, 2006
The mercurial rise in legalized gambling in the United States over roughly the last 15 years has spawned a great deal of debate among scientists and practitioners on how to conceptualize and study the phenomenon, how to treat persons who experience difficulties controlling their level of play, and how to prevent individuals from becoming problem or “pathological” gamblers. The current volume brings together a group of basic and applied behavior ...

More mysterious every time
I've read this several times and this time it seems even more haunting. It would have been a relatively short novel for Dickens even if he had finished it, and the fragment gives the impression of being very carefully planned. There are no unnecessary scenes. Every character seems to havea point. The cathedral town is vivid. I ince visted Rochester on acold day and it was quite eerie having ...
