Urban Fantasy at its absolute grandest!!!
Dreams Underfoot is the first book I ever read by Charles De Lint, and he became my favorite author half way through the text. Although I have read every other De Lint book or story I can find, and they are all simply breathtaking, (check out Memory and Dream!!) Dreams Underfoot has remained my favorite. Sentimentality, no doubt. Dreams Underfoot is a tapestry novel, with characters and events ...

This should be a series, not a single volume!
Songs, obviously, have a musical component. Ballads, specifically, have more than just words; they have stories to tell as well. Now, thanks to Charles Vess, they have their visual side, too. In his book Ballads, collected from earlier issues of his Book of Ballads and Sagas, Vess gives a new aspect to folk songs passed down through the ages. Visually stunning, his black and white illustrations ...

Another Excellent Story!
This isn't a big book - only 206 pages in the hardcover edition - but that doesn't matter at all. This is one of those stories that just grabs you from the start and sucks you right into the mythological world that Charles de Lint creates so well. It's not an action-packed book, nothing like that. Instead it follows the interactions of about seven individuals over the course of a few days. He ...

Great Collection
One sword. The true sword, EXCALIBUR. Forged from magic and courage, it bears the power of heroes and kings. Its nature is unique, but its forms are legion. It can appear... has appeared... will appear, anywhere, at any time, in a thousand hands in a thousand guises. For Excalibur is the force that protects the souls of Good's guardians, and changes the course of destinies... Tales of the ...

A glimps at the evolution of a writer
The new book by Charles De Lint, Triskell Tales, is a facinating look at the writings of one author over the course of 22 years. Every year Charles De Lint creates a small chapbook as a Christmas gift for family and close friends. Each chapbook holds a story or two, drawings (many by the author's wife, Mary Ann Harris), and / or poems. Triskell Tales represents 22 years of those chapbooks plus ...

Excellent Anthology
Most of the anthologies I've read in the genre of Fantasy/Scifi and horror are mixed bags of personal likes and dislikes of the editors...some of which are a bit too gory, too 'realistic' or just have what I'd like to call 'fantasy around the edges'. This series is really 'the best'...not the usual commercially bland mixes (see, Bob Silverberg's Legends), but a good mix of quirky, new authors as ...

Dead-serious fairy tales
I love adult fairy tales, but it seems that all too often, writers pump up the sex and violence to render the tales "adult", rather than more deeply exploring the human emotional dramas in the stories. Maybe that's why I love _The Armless Maiden_. The tales and poems here do include sex and violence, yes, but at their heart is the triumph of the human spirit. If we look carefully at fairy tales, ...

An original childrens' story
This is an excellent, 44 page book for younger children, filled with full color illustrations. The type style and formatting make it easily readable. It is the story of a young girl, Lillian, who lives with her aunt at the edge of the forest, far from the nearest neighbors. She spends her free time wandering in the woods looking for fairies. When disaster strikes, she is saved by cat magic. ...

[NO TITLE]
de Lint remains an author capable of producing wonders in the short form. His ability to create memorable characters with only a few deft strokes turns a sweet and simple tale into something that works better, in many ways, than a novel at evoking a mood and feeling. Only hinting at the larger world and broader concerns of the Newford novels and story sequences, SEVEN WILD SISTERS opens itself ...

If you are familar with Amy Brown than you already know how fun her art is. I personally bought this particular book for some tatoo ideas. Her fairies all seem to have personalities of their own.

Moonheart
I thought this book was excellent! It started off kind of slow. But after a while, especially the second half, I couldn't put it down until I finished it. There are a lot of characters to keep track of and some of the expressions that they make are sort of silly but I thought the overall story was interesting and entertaining. This was my first DeLint book, and the first fiction book that I ...

Who knew?
I've been reading this on my morning bus commute. I've missed my stop twice because I was so engrossed in one of the tales. I'm a Charles DeLint fan which is why I bought the book. It introduced me to a whole bunch of interesting Canadian writers with great stories to tell. The famous Canadian monster story is a hoot. Who knew Canada had so many national monsters?

Do I smell chocolate chips?
"It was a night of moonlight and silver, when the grass stalks whispered quietly to each other in the Big Field and clouds like tall ships sailed across the sky." That's the opening sentence of "What the Mouse Found & Other Stories," a slim new volume from Charles de Lint, published by Subterranean Press. If you think it sounds like the start of a children's tale, be sure to pat yourself on ...

Perfect
Charles De Lint is my favorite author, hands down. I recently got this collection of short stories, and I think it's his best collection yet. I wasn't so sure about getting such an expensive collection of short stories--but it was worth every penny. These stories are not just magical, and beautifully crafted, they all leave you smiling. The perfect book to have on hand for days you just ...

Super Great!
I have been reading Charles De Lint for a long time and have quite a collection. This man can WRITE! His imagination and way with words is beyond anyone elses as far as I am concerned. Each book grabs you by the throat and carries you through to the end. You just don't want to put it down. He makes all this stuff believeable. Maybe it IS true?

Expand Your Mind
This book is the only one of twelve editions that I have read. It is absolutely amazing. Not only does it question our common place world but it bends, strechtes and recreates you mind. I am looking to buy the book so I can read it all and have the stories at my finger tips. I am also going to read the next editions. Try one story, you will be hooked!

The Road to Lisdoonvarna
As a longtime fan of de Lint's books I was a little wary of his change in focus from mythic tales to a "hard boiled" detective story (in Charles' own words "a mystery novel with a PI as a lead character"). But I quickly changed my mind as I read this in less than a day and found myself not willing to put it down (as I really wanted to know what happened to the characters). And, since I took ...

darker than usual
Okay I admit I have only read the Charles de Lint story but that is what i bought it for. And the take in this story definately matches the title of the anthology. Darker than usual for this master but definately a fully enjoyable read. I didnt put it down from the moment i picked it up.

great
this was a really good book. i picked it up on a whim having heard good things about it, and it lived up to its expectations. i was kind of hesitant to get into it because it's about some street tough girl who has a run in with faeries, and i suppose there is a huge potential for this story line to destroy itself with cheesiness. but i was pleasantly surprised at how well it was put together. ...

A Magical Urban Animal-People Mystery
This wonderful novel takes place in a city, but on the fringes of that urban environment live people who are part animal and can change forms. Based on Native American mythology, De Lint has constructed a wonderful world of colorful characters (one man lives in an old bus at a dump, another drives an armor-plated taxi for gangsters). I got lost in this remarkable fantasy--highly recommended. ...
