Smithsonian Timelines of the Ancient World5 reviews
Chris Scarre

DK ADULT, 1993

From Trilobites to Kremlin Cathedrals
My father recently brought me back a trilobite from Russia, which is a trilobite dalmanite which crawled along the sea bed early in the history of the earth. I remember my father reading the story about the trilobites when I was very young and when he saw the fossil in Russia, he remembered the story and brought it home for me. There is a picture on page 21. While I don't believe in evolution ...

Ancient Civilizations (2nd Edition)4 reviews
Chris Scarre, Brian M. Fagan

Prentice Hall, 2002

Textbook Review
This is an introductory textbook for a college level course on ancient civilizations. Of those texts available on this subject matter, this is the best. It is clearly written and the material is presented in a logical order. It provides amble maps, tables, illustrations, etc.. It is also a very good source for those non-academic readers interested in the evolution and development of state ...

The Penguin Historical Atlas of Ancient Rome (Hist Atlas)17 reviews
Chris Scarre

Penguin (Non-Classics), 1995

Excellent for the lay man
I think I found answers to all I've ever wanted to know about the Roman Empire. This book is certainly readable by anyone. If you don't like reading long texts, this book is perfect. If you do like longer texts, this book is also nice. The balance between pictures and texts is optimal in my opinion.

The Palace of Minos at Knossos (Digging for the Past)
Chris Scarre, Rebecca Stefoff

Oxford University Press, USA, 2003

On March 23, 1900, Arthur John Evans and his staff began to excavate on Crete, looking for the fabled site of Knossos, where an extraordinary civilization, a precursor to classical Greece, was rumored to have existed. Almost from the first shovel stroke, artifacts began to emerge. Evans realized that here was "an extraordinary phenomenon, nothing Greek, nothing Roman. A wholly unexplored world." The Palace of Minos at Knossos recounts the ...

Exploring Prehistoric Europe (Places in Time)2 reviews
Chris Scarre

Oxford University Press, USA, 1999

Guidebook to the past
A guidebook to touring the ancient world is unusual to say the least. Scarre has managed to create one, and it's an admirable job. Sifting a wealth of research, he's produced a string of vignettes depicting archaeological sites available to visitors. He reminds us throughout the book that we have learned a great deal about our ancestors, but there's still much to be achieved. Some sites have ...

Just So-So
The details showing how sites were created were good but the content wasn't as interesting as I thought it would be.

Monuments and Landscape in Atlantic Europe: Perception and Society during the Neolithic and Early Bronze Age
