Isaac and Abulabaz find the true meaning of friendship.
Isaac, an emissary for Charlemange, is sent to Baghdad to bring tidings of peace to the Caliph. The Caliph accepts with the return offering of Abulabaz the elephant. Isaac must now find his way back to France--with the elephant. Together the two travelers manage to finish their journey and become fast friends in the process. Maze: Solve the World's Most Challenging Puzzle37 reviews
Christopher Manson

Henry Holt and Co. BYR Paperbacks, 1985

A "Crete-tive" Labyrinth worthy of the master Daedalus
I discovered Christopher Manson's MAZE in college and I found it so fascinating I knew I had to share it with the boys and girls at my workplace. I have now shared MAZE with hundreds of children--kindergarten students to sixth-graders--from Lawrence, KS to Denver, CO. Regrettably, someone stole my much-worn original copy last year from the elementary school where I worked (I know, crazy!). I ...

Uncle Sam & Old Glory : Symbols of America4 reviews
Delno C. West, Jean M. West

Atheneum, 2000

An Excellent Teacher Resource
I am a 3rd grade teacher and I highly recommend this book. It is an excellent resource for teaching about the Symbols of America. Each page focuses on the origins and meanings of a particular symbol in concise, yet highly interesting text. The illustrations are full color and fabulous. My students love this book and practically fight to be able to read it during free time.

A Gift for the King: A Persian Tale1 review
Christopher Manson, William Painter

Henry Holth & Co (J), 1989

tale with a nice lesson, but few surprises
When wealthy King Artaxerxes gets bored with all his treasures, he takes a walk (not unlike the Buddha, I suppose), and along his route, he is offered still more treasures and riches. He turns them all down, then feels thirsty. Only when a poor young boy offers him a drink of water does he show any gratitude. He holds his water cup with pride and joy, and cherishes it beyond all matter of ...

The Rails I Tote: Forty-Five Illustrated Spoonerisms to Decipher (Owl Books)1 review
Christopher Manson

Henry Holt & Co, 1987

Not as classic as "Maze", but still fun.
Christopher Manson is the author and illustrator of the book "Maze", which is subtitled as "Solve the World's Most Challenging Puzzle" (and it deserves that title, in my opinion). "The Rails I Tote" is not another "Maze", and that's why I can't give it the same 5-star rating. Still, it's another unique book with Mansons' similar avant-garde feel. There are 45 sections, each containing one ...

Good King Wenceslas6 reviews

Diane Pub Co, 1994

Excellent Illustrations in a Good Christmas Book.
"Good King Wenceslas" Illustrated by Christopher Manson North-South Books. The Illustrator, Christopher Manson, has gone through a great deal of work to produce a beautiful book of art telling the story of "Good King Wenceslas", as well known by the carol of the same name, written by John Mason Neale in 1853. The colorful illustrations match the Christmas season, with the front piece and the ...

Till Year's Good End2 reviews
W. Nikola-Lisa

Atheneum, 1997

A year in the life of a peasant
If you ever wonder what life was like for the Medieval peasant then I highly recommend that you read Till Year's Good End. Each spread is devoted to the work accomplished in a given month, starting with January and ending in December. I adore this book. The illustrations are wonderful, obviously inspired by medieval woodcuts. The aura of the changing seasons is felt as pages in the book are ...

Black Swan White Crow
J. Patrick Lewis

Atheneum, 1995

A collection of haiku brings together such images as a spider in August, bison during a winter storm, crows resting on a phone wire, and a grizzly bear fishing in a stream, all enhanced by woodcut illustrations.

Over the River and Through the Wood6 reviews
Lydia Maria Child

Nice pictures, fun to have a book you can sing
My three-year old lovrd this. Nice pictures of an old-fashioned Thanksgiving, but he particularly liked the idea of a ook you could sing along to.
