Not for the beginner
I enjoy Christopher Parkening's music books and this one was no disappointment. As a "hobby classical guitarist", this one presented many challenging pieces for me to learn, but I've enjoyed it. Well written and easy to understand.

This is a nice selection for any guitarist's collection. I don't personally find the proselytizing or "Bible-thumping", as another reviewer puts it, offensive, just somewhat, oh, say, gratuitous, I suppose. Another reviewer (hominuslupus) makes a good point: there is a bit of proselytizing in these books (dig that aura and white turtleneck, man!). Still, a good method.

I can't imagine someone actually learning to play the classical guitar with this book, but it was a great review book for someone who hasn't played for awhile and wants a refresher to improve technique.

Parkening Plays Bach: Virtuoso Music for Guitar
I found Pakening's transcriptions to be wonderfully true to the original compositions. I especially enjoyed the transcription of BE THOU WITH ME (Aria: Bist Du bei mir BWV 508). Though some of the stretches are fairly difficult, the music is beautiful in nature. Reguarding the stretches, Parkening himself said "No compromise has been made in requirements of technique." I give this book five stars.
