The J.R.R. Tolkien Audio Collection14 reviews

Caedmon, 2001

Truely magical!
I absolutely love this group of CDs! Hearing Tolkien himself reading exerpts from The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings make reading the stories themselves even more wonderful! And when Christopher reads from The Silmarillion, it's just amazing, especially for someone who's been reading these stories since I was a little child. I'd recommed these CDs to anyone who wanted ot listen to a true master ...

The Children of Hurin1 review
J. R. R./ Tolkien, Christopher (EDT)/ Lee, Alan (ILT) Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 2007

Great stand alone book for the fantastic tale of Hurin and his family
This book was a sight for sore eyes, being the first Lord of the Rings book in a long time. The book was very well put together and I really enjoyed reading it. However, the illustrations in this book put it above any other book I've read in a while. Alan Lee illustrations were unbelievable and I loved getting to the page where there would be another one by him.

The History of Middle-earth: Index2 reviews
Christopher Tolkien

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, 2002

Very important instrument for H.o.M.E researchers
When a friend of mine told me about this book I first thought it was hilarious. Why should I ever need a book that is sole purpose is to index the H.o.M.E? Every one that own the H.o.M.E knows that there is a detailed index in every book of this series. But I was wrong, This book has immense significance to every Tolkien researcher that want to produce a theory and need reference in several ...

Los hijos de Hurin1 review
J Tolkien

Minotauro, 2008

The Book of Lost Tales, Part Two (The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. 2)26 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 1986

Essential Continuation to Part One. Tolkien'sEarly Myths
`The Book of Lost Tales, Part One and Part Two' by J. R. R. Tolkien, edited by son, Christopher Tolkien, is, according to the editor's Foreword, some of the very earliest works written by Tolkien on the mythology of Middle Earth. Many, it is stated, were drafted in the 1920s, nearly ten years before the start of `The Hobbit'. This is an important fact, as it means that they were not written to ...

**BRAND NEW - THE SILMARILLION, SECOND EDITION, by J.R.R. Tolkien, Edited by Christopher Tolkien (The Epic ...1 review
J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien, 2002

Great book for learning about the formation of Middle Earth
I thought the Silmarillion was the perfect companion to the Lord of the Rings. It details everything before the Third Age, and even some in the Third Age itself. I especially like the parts that talk about Numenor and the great kings there. It explains Sauron even more and all of the First Age, formation of Orcs and Balrogs, and other interesting facts.

The Shaping of Middle-Earth: The Quenta, the Ambarkanta and the Annals (The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. 4)7 reviews
J. R. R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin Company, 1986

Early Notes for The Silmarillion, plus MAPS! Better than Vol III
`The Shaping of Middle-Earth' is the fourth volume of Christopher Tolkien's exegesis of his father, J.R.R. Tolkien's unpublished writings which were done before, during, and after the writing of `The Hobbit' and `The Lord of the Rings'. It is important to realize that beginning with Volume III, `The Lays of Beleriand', these volumes are prepared according to the date on which the elder Tolkien ...

Peoples of Middle-Earth (History of Middle-Earth)12 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, 1997

Great stuff for the hardcore fan...
This one, 10 (Morgorth's Ring), 9 (End of the Third Age), and 5 (The Lost Road and Other Writings) are the most worthwile entries of the 12 volume series. Don't buy it for "The New Shadow", however, as it is only 20ish pages and Eldarion or Aragorn don't even come into the story...closest tie to LOTR is the brother of Bergil, son of Beregond. However, there's lots here for you Numenorian ...

Sauron Defeated: The History of The Lord of the Rings, Part Four (The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. 9)10 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 1992

the past 3 books I had to give a 4 and I felt absolutely horrible doing that, but I am back on the 5 train for the rest of these
So maybe you didn't fly through the last 3 books like the first five, but get ready to put your seatbelt on for this ride. The start of this book finished off the evolution of the lord, and also gives a pretty cool story where sam is answering his kids questions of what happened in the war of the ring. The second part is back to the stuff that I love. I have reread the wierd inklings ...

Morgoth's Ring: The Later Silmarillion, Part One ~ The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. X (10)15 reviews
J.R.R. and Christopher Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin Co., 1993

More in depth Silmarillion writings, and more depth than you could ever imagine
Part 1 starts out with another version of the Ainulindale. Tolkien would always be revising his stories and the reason for it could be many things. In the Ainulindale he rewrote it to make radical changes to the cosmology. It is very easy to see why most of his writings were never finished, every little change he made would throw off the entire Middle-Earth world from what it was before. ...

Unfinished Tales82 reviews
J. R. R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 1980

This is a great collection of Tolkien work!
I read this book very quickly because I was so fascinated by all the works that Tolkien left unfinished at the time of his death. His son did a beautiful job of compiling these works into an organized book and I really enjoyed it.

Excellent
I got this for my son-in-law who is a Tolken fan. I ordered this from Amazon, but it was damaged. They did replace it. Thanks to them my son-in-law's Christmas was saved and he really likes it. Kudos to Amazon.com.

The Letters37 reviews
J. R. R. Tolkien

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, 1981

An interesting and enlightening read
Do you want to understand J.R.R. Tolkien and his fantastic stories? I mean, really understand them? Then you must get this book. This book is a collection of letters from the great man, ranging from a World War I love letter to a note written to his daughter just before his death. But, do not think that these letters are irrelevant. In fact, he discusses many things about his books, the ...

The Lost Road and Other Writings (The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. 5)13 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, 1987

if you read the first four in the "history", then set your expectations higher than the last book
past reviewers keep saying these books are really hard. Now I graduated high school but have started college 3 different times and yet will have to start a 4th because certain parts of it are just too hard for me. I am actually kind of ashamed of myself because all of my friends are WAY ahead of me. Sorry to get off topic up above there, and maybe it is my passion for these books after ...

The Silmarillion664 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

HarperCollins Publishers Ltd, 2000

Must read
Wasn't my intention, but I read Tolkien's books, in this order, LOTR, Hobbit, Turin, and Silmarillion. I think it has worked out quite well reading them in reverse chonologic order. The Silmarlillion is a fantastic backdrop and foundation to the entire world Tolkien has created. A Masterpiece.

The Return of the Shadow: The History of the Lord of the Rings -- Part One17 reviews
J. R. R.; Tolkien, Christopher Tolkien

Unwin Hyman, 1988

Vital exploration of Tolkien's work, but for fans only
If you're not a Tolkien fan, you need not apply to the sprawling History of Middle Earth series. But if you're interested in seeing how the Professor developed the rich creation of Middle Earth, warts and all, this is a treasure trove of material. The 12 volumes of the History of Middle Earth take a close look at the creation of Tolkien's greatest achievement - Middle Earth itself - through early ...

The Lays of Beleriand (The History of Middle-Earth, Vol. 3)20 reviews
J.R.R. Tolkien

Houghton Mifflin, 1985

Reviewer said nothing new....... Well i got news for him, everything in this is new.
If you are a tolkien lover, poetry lover, or both like me then you will get the awesome experience of reading some of the origins of turin, beren, etc. There are not a lot of poems and they are all unfinished. But there are things in this book which you will treasure forever like the hate filled words spoken to eachother by morgoth and hurin. Just like tolkiens original writings in book 1 and ...
