JEEPERS! An interesting book about math?
What a relief to open the pages of this book. I approach mathematics as a subject necessary, but always painful, to learn. Dare I say I love this book? Some of the short stories are humorous, some are endearing, some have common characters. All deal with mathematics in one way or another. Fadiman's book succeeded where so many others failed--it interested me. A LIFE LEARNING POINT: This book ...

A Big Bang of information
This book is obviously only geared towards those remotely interested in physics, so that's what it does: cater to the contemplative individual. Believe it or not, this collection of writings grabbed me from the first subtitle, 'Atoms in Motion', and literally propelled me through the next 800 pages of lectures and dissertations, ranging from Mr. Isaac Asimov to Albert Einstein. If you've been ...

One of my favorite books
I must admit, I have had this book either by my bed or (forgive me!) in the bathroom for at least 20 years and am on my third - the other two worn out from too frequent reading. Lots of wonderful tidbits on just about anyone you can think of in history/literature/the arts/music. Highly recommended.

an awesome accomplishment
This is an astonishing volume packed with beautiful poems. I honestly cannot think of a better gift for poetry lovers (or, indeed, plain lovers or anyone else...). Akkadian poetry, Nazim Hikmet, Tagore.... almost every single poet that I love is here. How did the editors manage do it???

read the preface for goodness sake
I haven't reviewed a book in a long time because customer reviews so often annoy me. Now I'm writing this one because another one has. Another reveiwer here criticizes The New Lifetime Reading Plan and its predecessors for not including the Bible. That would be a good criticism indeed if not for this sentence from the preface to the book, " We assume that nearly every reader of this book will ...

A deserving edition for a true classic
Moby Dick is one of the great American classic novels. Although it sold very poorly when first published and damaged Melville's established reputation as a writer of exotic novels it has rightfully assumed its place in the canon of great 19th century novels. I won't repeat the story here. Who doesn't already know the plot (which is based on a true story of a whaler rammed by a whale and sunk)? ...

This book is great. I was so pleased to find it. I had bought one 16 years ago for my children and bought this one for a great-nephew. I hope I can find it for many years to come.

Wonderfully chuckley humor. Makes me smile.
This book is very humorous. It brings to mind many of the bits of life I have lived. The best part is that it is not isolated issues. In addition, the sketches add a great deal to the total humor. I just happened to come across it in the library. Such a treat. Thank you for brightening my days.

wonderful,great, magnificent
My husband and I got this book the day our daughter was born. We enjoyed watching her eyes light up at the great stories. When she began reading she would not put the book down unless she had to. I recomend these books to any parent or grandparent.

The appearance of mathematical ideas in fiction was both exciting and inspiring
Being a fundamental component of the human experience, it is natural that mathematics will appear in literature. In this book, Fadiman has brought together a collection of fiction works where mathematics plays a role in the plot. The level of involvement is varied, in some stories it is fundamental and in others it is incidental. However, in all cases it is exciting to see how it is used to flesh ...

The Op. 1 of Frederic Niezsche !
The first essay of this giant philosopher is deeply influenced for the echoes of Schopenhauer and Richard Wagner and pretends expose a new conception of the world : the tragic thought, , the intuition of the unity of the things , the converse affirmation of the life and death , the timeless return , the innocence of becoming . Fundamental text if you want to get ready for the Apollonian and ...

A great sequel
This anthology might as well be titled Fantasia Mathematica, Volume 2. When Volume 1 first appeared in 1958, readers couldn't get enough, so this work followed in 1962, and is now back in print. I first read Volume 1 as a teenager, so the current title doesn't carry for me the nostalgia of the original, but there's still lots of good stuff. This time, the best section appears first, A Set ...
