A portrait showcase of the work of James VanDerzee
The James VanDerZee Studio is a portrait showcase of the work of photographer James VanDerZee, who operated a portrait studio at various locations in Harlem from 1916 to 1969. A history of street photography described in both text and photos. The authors are well knowledged in the field and provide a very well layed out book that is enjoyable to read. A great coffee table book.

Not the greatest
Evidently Joel's main claim to fame is his relationship with Garry Winogrand. Certainly the photographs in this book don't put him in the same class as Winogrand or Winogrand's other contemporaries. Unfortunately, Joel has added self-congratulatory comments to the pictures in this book. The combination of mediocre photographs and unfortunate comments is likely to leave the reader with a feeling ...

Dream, metaphor, sensuality, fetishism and play are among the defining characteristics of the collection of Surrealist art Julien Levy assembled in the 1930s and 40s. As one of Modernism's preeminent art dealers, Levy's passion went beyond professional protocol, Levy didn't just sell Surrealism, he lived it. Artists he represented were intimate friends and he shared in their creative life. Works by Atget, Arp, Bing, Brassaï, Cartier-Bresson, ...

review of Jona Frank's photo journal 'Right'
'Right' is a photo journal by Jona Frank covering Patrick Henry College which is often referred to as the Evangelical Ivy League and sometimes the Homeschool College. Photographs were high quality and essays interesting. There was obviously some wondering why students would be intently focused on their goals and education. A sense of destiny is generally portrayed and reflects a unique element in ...

African Americans in Art
Great resource for those with an interest, or who would like to study African-American Art (or as I prefer, American Art from the perspective of an African-American artist).

From Booklist: The occasion that inspired this retrospective of one of the century's most captivating and stylish photographers is Penn's donation of his professional archives and a hand-picked collection of his work to the Art Institute of Chicago. This is cause for celebration, and Westerbeck, the museum's curator of photography, and his contributors, including former Vogue editor Rosamond Bernier and anthropologist Edmund Carpenter, who ...
