Harold y el Lapiz Color Morado (Harold and the Purple Crayon) 3 reviews Crockett Johnson, Teresa Mlawer
Rayo, 1995
Tan encantador en español como en inglés (Just as charming) Even grownups enjoy this imaginative story of a boy whose purple crayon takes him on a magical journey. The Spanish translation retains all the magic of the English original, such that a friend in his 20s became glued to the book when I first brought it to his attention. Caution: Although the story is understandable to children as young as 3 or 4, it is longer than it looks! Begin the story ...

Harold's Fairy Tale (Further Adventures of with the Purple Crayon) 6 reviews
HarperTrophy, 1994
Further Adventures with the Purple Crayon "One evening Harold got out of bed, took his purple crayon and the moon along, and went for a walk in an enchanted garden".
So begins this classic tale, which expands on numerous original elements first introduced in its also excellent predecessor, Harold and the Purple Crayon.
Harold exists in a world entirely defined by his imagination and the lines he draws with his purple crayon. These ...

Harold's Trip to the Sky 3 reviews
HarperTrophy, 1981
One of the best children's books for the imagination. As a child between the age of 6 and 8, I remember going to the library with my mother and checking out each of the adventure's that Harold had. I must have checked them all out more than ten times each. The concept of a small boy using his purple crayon to imagine many things was so fun. The vocabulary is suitable for the reccommended age group. The pictures are great. The spectacular ...

Harold's ABC (Purple Crayon Book) 1 review
HarperTrophy, 1981
Fantasic Alphabet Book for Children This book quite cleverly introduces the alphabet A to Z. Each letter is introduced in order and appears as part of the picture associated with it. Descriptive words use the letter, usually starting with it. Text leading to the next page (and next letter) suggests the next letter by using it at the beginning of some words, too. Very cleverly written. I grew up with "Harold and the Purple ...

A Picture for Harold's Room 4 reviews Crockett Johnson
HarperTrophy, 1985
THIS IS A FABULOUS BOOK TO READ OUT LOUD I adored this book when I was a kid (some 30 years ago) and since then I have read it out loud to lots of kids -- including groups in hospitals and at libraries. They always love it -- expecially the age 3 to 5 crowd. The illustrations are very simple, but really appealing to kids. It's also a terrific book for beginning readers since the vocabulary is pretty simple.

Magic Beach 2 reviews Crockett Johnson
Front Street, 2005
a diamond in the rough i stumbled upon this book in the bookstore as i was shopping for a present and fell in love with it. it is a simple story about being a part of a story versus just reading a story, and can reach a large spectrum of readers. i would recommend this book for children above first grade though, the illustrations are beautiful but may not catch the attention of the younger readers.

The Carrot Seed 60th Anniversary Edition 35 reviews Ruth Krauss
HarperTrophy, 1989
don't give up! This book had a huge impact on me as a child.
Everyone told the boy his carrot seed would not come up. Even the adults. My reaction was this: adults know everything, so why is this boy still trying? I was truly surprised when the carrot seed sprouted, and I clapped and cheered. My next reaction was this: maybe *I* shouldn't give up, even when other people tell me to. This is one of the ...

Ellen's Lion: Twelve Stories by Crockett Johnson 3 reviews Crockett Johnson
Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2003
Family Favorite This book has been a favorite of our family's since we discovered it after our first child was born in 1986. Eighteen years later, we still read and quote from this book. Every child should have a lion like Ellen's. We are so glad it is out in a new edition. Our copy is getting a little ragged.

Barnaby 2 reviews Crockett Johnson
H. Holt, 1943
One of the most wonderful comic strips of all time It is a crying shame that Barnaby is now out of print, except for the reprints in Comics Revue magazine. This is a book that deserves to be kept in print forever. Write to Dover, and urge them to reissue it.

The Happy Egg 3 reviews Ruth Krauss
HarperCollins, 2005
Every bit as good as The Carrot Seed! A year ago I went looking for this book, which turned out to be long out of print. In fact, the very knowledgeable bookstore staff I spoke to doubted its very existence! The Carrot Seed is a beloved classic, but its close sibling The Happy Egg had been strangely forgotten. I'm glad to see it back.
The two books are by the same husband-and-wife team, and share a natural kinship in their ...

HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON 1 review Crockett Johnson
Scholastic Book Services, 1955
Harold, creator of worlds..., Yes, I am a 49 year old man writing a review for a children's book, and, no, I do not think that I ought to be ashamed of myself. A short while ago I stumbled upon a copy of this book by accident and I could't believe the flood of warm and pleasant memories that it brought back. This was perhaps my favorite childhood book, along with the sequels. Maybe this was because from my earliest memories I ...

Mickey's Magnet 1 review Franklyn M. Branley, Eleanor K. Vaughn
