Best of Venice (Best Of)
Damien Simonis

Lonely Planet, 2007

Elusive and enigmatic, Venice is a dreamlike place that beggars description. Countless artists have tried with pen and brush to render the shimmering lagoon with its slender bell towers. It’s an enticing vision, increasingly difficult to find amid the madding crowds in St Mark’s Square, but in Best of Venice we’ll show you how. Word Of Art – from Byzantine and High Renaissance to modish modernism, Venice itself is a work of art. ...

Lonely Planet Egypt: A Travel Survival Kit (Lonely Planet Egypt)34 reviews

Lonely Planet, 1996

If you only bought one travel guide to Egypt this is it
This book is fantastic, I wore it out during my year and a half stay in Egypt and it was essential in planning a lot of my trips. In a land where bargaining rules you need to know the rules of the game and this book not only gave you tips to finding good bargains but also provided you with pretty accurate estimates to what the normal price would be (which is often not what the average tourist ...

Barcelona (City Guide)14 reviews
Damien Simonis

Lonely Planet, 2008

Useful, detailed map of the city
This is a nice, detailed map of the main part of Barcelona's city. It has all of the major sites labeled right on the map, and it includes all streets, even the very small ones. It also has a subway map, which is a necessity. It doesn't include much of the outskirts, but that is fine for a map of this size. The plastic covering on the map has come in handy, but it isn't completely sealed, so ...

great restaurants and good advice
I just came back from Florence and I used this guide. It had great restaurants listed and I visited serveral. It also gave me some great advice for going to Fiesole. I saw a private garden that was beautiful! If you are the type that likes to go to local hangouts, this is your guide.

Lonely Planet Middle East on a Shoestring (2nd ed)1 review
Andrew Humphreys, Tom Brosnahan, ...

Lonely Planet, 1997

"Shoestrings" - excellent read but too much missing!
As usual, Lonely Planet have attacked this project with vigour and research and produced a comprehensive guide to the Middle East. However, as is the problem with the "Shoestring" editions, a vast amount has to be left out, an enormous of amount of information must be precised in order to produce a managable, helpful guide for a region. Local knowledge of an area is vital to ensure that the ...

Lonely Planet Venice (Venice, 1st ed)7 reviews
Damien Simonis

Lonely Planet, 2000

INVALUABLE ... Lonely Planet kicks it up several notches!
The 3 reviews earlier refers to the older version of this guide. Lonely Planet has recently started to revamp all their guides and I have the new Rome, Florence & Venice. They are absolutely flawless. I will focus on Venice here (Rome & Florence has the same format as well). You will have an Introduction to Venice, City Life, Art & Architecture, History, Food (as Italy was united in 1870, every ...

Lonely Planet Sardinia2 reviews
Damien Simonis

Lonely Planet Publications, 2003

Very well done
I bought this book because the reviews about Rough Guide were pretty bad, and I must say Lonely Planet delivered once again. It's full of "local" tips that must have taken the author a very long time to put together. A few more mini-maps would save dozens of lines of directions to reach those hidden places, and would save the reader a lot of time on the road. We would also have done with a few ...

Lonely Planet Tuscany (Lonely Planet Tuscany and Umbria)2 reviews
Neal Bedford, Damien Simonis, ...

Lonely Planet Publications, 2002

Not up to Lonely Planet Standards
I am reading this guide in preparation for an upcoming trip to Florence. I have found this guide confusing and badly organized. I still don't have a feel for the major sights in each area. I'm going to have to buy a few other guides. I usually have good luck with Lonely Planet guides - this one just isn't up to snuff.

Lonely Planet North Africa1 review
Damien Simonis, David Willett, ...

Lonely Planet, 1995

Quite out-of-date, but great material nevertheless
This 700-page guidebook dates back to 1995, covering Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and Libya. As a result, it is inevitably out-of-date: much has changed in the countries of North Africa, in their situation and in facilities for the traveler, especially in Libya and Algeria. Some sections on how to get around etc. are surely out-of-date. Yet, this book remains a truly essential tool for anyone ...

Essential for the first, second, third.....time visitor
I am preparing to depart on my third trip to Morocco. This book is THE BEST travel guide for Morocco. It gives the first time traveler and the veteran good insight on where to go, what to see, and the all important how to act and how not to get taken advantage of.. My husband, a Moroccan native won't travel around his country without it.
